Outdoor Activities for Summer Time

Walking Trails of Central Labrador

If you really want to appreciate the beautiful surroundings of Central Labrador a visit to one of the many walking trails is a must! Experience nature as it was meant to be seen by taking a pleasant walk or hike on one of the following trails.

Birch Brook Nordic Ski Club - Summer Trails

These hills, normally used for cross-country skiing, become challenging hiking trails during the summer months. Hike the many groomed trails to view the breathtaking sites of Gosling Lake, Lake Melville and the Mealy Mountains. The woods are full of many examples of local flora and fauna for the nature enthusiast. The main chalet at the trail head has a sign-in book, donation box and maps of the trail system.

Happy Valley Trails

Enjoy a stroll along the town walking and bicycling trail which runs from the lower end of Happy Valley to the south side. The most popular part is from the Town Hall to Hamilton Heights (about 45 minutes). Another great town walking trail begins behind Warr’s Pharmacy and works its way along the shoreline offering picturesque views of the Mealy Mountains from across the river.

North West River Tranquility Trails

This mile long walking trail begins at the north end of North West River and follows the shore line. It also has the added convenience of bridges and signage.

Sunday Hill Look-off

Located in the picturesque town of North West River, Sunday Hill Look-off allows for a beautiful view of the Mealy Mountains, Grand Lake and Lake Melville. Picnic tables are provided for your convenience. Watch the spectacular sunrise or sunset for an added unforgettable bonus. Birch Island Boardwalk

The Birch Island Boardwalk is located in lower valley «

History of Happy Valley -Goose Bay

The town of Happy Valley–Goose Bay, considered the “Hub of Labrador”, is located at the

extreme western end of Lake Melville, a long salt-water lake extending 210 kilometers inland from the Labrador Sea. The scenic, white capped Mealy Mountains border one side of the lake with a great rolling plain on the other. The population is approximately 8,500 people.

The Fur trade originally brought settlers to central Labrador where hunting and trapping was a way of life. The Hudson Bay Compa- ny forged relations with trappers, purchasing furs and providing for a new way of life. Still others were attracted to the central corridor because of its abundance of fish, wildlife, timber, rich soil and the longer growing season.

The Goose Bay Air Force Base was built on a large sandy plateau near the mouth of the Goose River during the early years of World War II. The area was selected due to its strategic location and ability to provide support to military operations abroad. After only 79 days of construction, the 7,000 foot runways were ready to receive aircraft. During the war thousands of aircraft passed through Goose Bay which became the landing and refueling stop for the Atlantic Ferry Command. The war represented a turning point in history, not only for the Lake Melville region, but for all of Labrador. In more recent years the base has continued to provide support and coordination for international military groups practicing tactical flight training activities.

The first settlers to Happy Valley–Goose Bay were the Saunders, Broomfields, and Perrault families who came from Coastal Labrador communities to work with the McNamara Construction Company building the Goose Bay Air Force Base. They originally settled at Otter Creek in 1942, but were informed by authorities that they were too close to the proposed air base and would have to relocate at least 8km from the base. The new site was called Refugees Cove until 1955 when the community was remained Happy Valley.

The local improvement district of Goose Bay was set up in 1970 and at the time included Spruce Park and the Canadian Department of Transport housing areas. By 1973 however, most of the base was also included. The town of Happy Valley–Goose Bay was formed in 1973 and had all of the facilities of a modern town; schools, churches, hotels, barber shops, police and fire

department.
