With its participation in the tournament Vancouver College managed to set the following records at the tournament that had its beginnings in 1946:

Most Games Played 178

Most Games Won 114

Most Appearances 48

VC also holds the record for the Most Championships (tied with two other schools), Most Times Finalist (tied with one other school) and Most First Team All Stars.

There is great promise for the 2014-15 version of the Irish as only two members of this year’s team are seniors. 3 VC Sports

Measuring the success of 7th Annual Alumni Irish Athletics Hockey Athletics has always played a large role in the culture of Vancouver College. Over the years the Tournament Fighting Irish teams have competed in a variety of sports with many different levels of success. There are a number of views on how one should measure success in our athletic programs. Should it be by number of championships, number of wins or number of young men competing. One measure we Sold Out would like to take a look at in the edition of the Irish Review is how many of our student athletes have gone on to continue their studies and, at the same time, compete in their sport at the college or Well, we came pretty close to breaking a sales record university level. In the 2013-14 school year we have identified 45 alumni who are competing at this level yet again for this event! We officially sold out at 9am in seven different sports. As always we would be grateful if any errors or omissions could be pointed out. April 16th! 4 1/2 days, not too shabby.

Steve Sweeney (VC’73) 1. DISCERNING ONE’S ABILITIES, TALENTS & GIFTS… and PUTTING THESE AT THE SERVICE OF OTHERS. Vancouver College encourages young men to discover and apply their Mark Sykes (VC’87) abilities and talents, and put them at the service of others. It is a distinctively ‘Catholic-Christian’ community: one’s talents and gifts are given to them by God to be shared, to serve others, and make the world a better place. The Edmond Rice Christian Brothers encouraged this in their students, West Vancouver Transit Police Police Department and exemplified this in their lives. All of the Brothers at Vancouver College had various intellectual, physical, spiritual, and leadership gifts which were evident in the living out of their vocation, and Dominic Toa (VC’95) Warren Chow (VC’00) through which they encouraged their students. Indeed the Brothers were not only talented and Byron Taguiam (VC’95) dedicated teachers, but they also put in much time and effort before and after school to provide for the students a range of extra-curricular activities that would provide a comprehensive environment for formation and growth.

However, at its foundation its academic emphasis was paramount for students of all abilities. Brother Paul Nolan comes to mind as a hard-working, talented, and dedicated teacher who was relentless in his conviction that all students who graduated from his Grade 12 English would be able to be proficient in fulfilling the requirements of English 12. For Brother Nolan, no young man was incapable of complet- ing his course and graduating. Brother Nolan also made it clear that he believed in our ability and that we too must believe… and therefore work accordingly. Brother Blom Basil was another example Here Come of a dedicated teacher who set the bar high when it came to fulfilling the requirements of his math courses. However, he believed that any learning challenge could be solved by hard work – and he Da Judge! would put in his own time and effort to help a struggling student through the coursework. Over the past 90 years Vancouver College has produced Many Christian Brothers were inspiring in bringing to bear their many gifts and talents to the task a significant number of alumni who have gone into of providing for students the best of the Edmond Rice tradition of a good Catholic education. He has become a good James Coady (VC’42) – BC Court of Appeal (retired) friend, and I thank him for his support during the times when I assisted in chaplaincy capacities, and as we exchanged thoughts and ideas about serving the Church of the Archdiocese of Vancouver. Ian Donald (VC’62) – BC Court of Appeal 2. THE PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE. The College has always held EXCELLENCE as a high priority. Ron McKinnon (VC’58) – BC Supreme Court I also have seen how the Vancouver College community has become more mature in understanding and supporting the extent of ‘excellence in all things.’ A proper and appropriate approach to excellence Barry Morgan (VC’71) – Provincial Court of Saskatchewan was illustrated by the teaching and actions of many of the Christian Brothers. Many of the Brothers were great athletes and fierce competitors when it came to sports and athletic achievement. However, Ray Paris (VC’52) – BC Supreme Court (retired) the support of excellence also extended to other areas. In my time at the College Brother Leo Taylor Bill Stewart (VC’63) – Provincial Court of BC (retired) – in addition to his teaching of upper-level Physics - put in many hours for much of the year preparing musical scores and practicing with students in preparation for the famous ‘musicals’ that the school Jim Wingham (VC’69) – Provincial Court of BC would jointly put on with . Brother Taylor demanded hard work and attention to detail when it came to musical performance, and he provided students with new insights in what it meant to act as a team when it came to choral performance and the fulfillment As always, we would be grateful to learn of any of our responsibilities. errors or omissions.

A key learning regarding “excellence” at Vancouver College is that it is a reflection of personal and 2013 Fraser Institute community excellence that is based in character and faith. I recall one day when our Principal, Brother Louis Bucher addressed the whole student body about what he described as the problem and scandal of securing our lockers and personal effects from one another with locker pad-locks. He stated that we were a Christian community, based on honesty, integrity, and respect for others. I recall one day some of my classmates in Grade 8 asking Brother Robert Colford why he was “just a brother – and why did he not go all the way and become a priest.” His response was both instructive and insightful: “I became a brother not as a half-way measure to be a priest, but because this was a unique way to serve God and others. I am not a priest, I am a brother! I take vows that are unique for Christian Brothers. And I serve in a way that priests do not. And priests serve in ways that you and Where are they now?
