Biography:

Samuel Simon Schmucker, born February 28, 1799 in Hagerstown, Maryland, was the son of a prominent and himself became a prominent Lutheran minister of the time. Schmucker was instrumental in the founding of both the Gettysburg Theological Seminary (1826) and (1832), at first called Pennsylvania College. He also served as the first professor at the Gettysburg Theological Seminary. His education includes the York County Academy, the Episcopal Parochial School, the University of Pennsylvania, and the Princeton Theological Seminary. After completing his education, Schmucker also taught in the York Academy for a period of time. Since he had graduated from the Princeton Theological Seminary, his theological education was in the Presbyterian tradition. However, Schmucker was a very devout Lutheran, founding the first Lutheran affiliated college in the state of Pennsylvania. Schmucker had a total of three wives and 13 children, with the majority of children with his second wife, Mary Catherine Steenbergen. He was also relatively well traveled for his day, making several tours abroad and within the United States. He was also the author and subject of several books and publications. Schmucker died July 26, 1873. Schmucker Hall, formerly the library and currently a fine arts building, is named after Samuel Simon Schmucker.
