East Malvern JFC Inc. Annual Report 2007

PRESIDENT’S REPORT –2010 (LEWIS BEARMAN) It is with much pleasure that I present the Annual Report and Financial Statements of the East Malvern Junior Football Club Inc. for the 2010 season.

2010 IN REVIEW – Building on 2009 and moving forward.

This year we were able to begin the football season on time and due to much better weather conditions with all of grounds in much better condition due to Stonnington upgrade works over the past few years. The increased rain also meant that our grounds were not too hard.

I adopted a theme throughout 2010 that the reputation of our club is one of competitiveness and fairness both on and off the ground. We have reinforced that parent behaviour is the cornerstone of a successful club and at all times respect our opposition and the umpires. I am proud to say that throughout season 2010 we have for the majority of the season achieved this objective.

This season the club again competed in the MSJFL football competition.

We wish to acknowledge the MSJFL executives who have assisted the EMJFC throughout the 2010 season. We have received great support over the season, especially from administration officer David Cannizzo and recently retired league president David Andrews.

Whilst we have faced challenges as a club in 2010 we would not have been able to have achieved what we did without the support of the Executive.

As a club we have also contributed strongly to the league hosting a division of both the u9 & u10 lightening premiership at DW Lucas. In addition through the hard work of Marc Gauci the northern umpires academy was established with the support of Adrian Fisher and the MSJFL to provide an umpires training venue for umpires on this side of town. We need this initiative to continue to grow as the competition will need more umpires involved in this great game in coming seasons.

The lightening premierships for under 9 and 10’s were again a great success at DW Lucas. The day was impacted by wet weather but the marquees erected at our ground again looked fantastic in 2010.

We had teams contest MSJFL finals across the age groups. Whilst we only contested 1 grand final in the Under 11 west age group, who pleasingly won the premiership under the coaching of Grieg Ward, the success of the season is not measured in premierships alone. Participation and enjoyment are 2 of the successful measures we have achieved as a club in 2010 . Congratulations go to all teams for very successful seasons. The fact that we only had 1 premiership team in the MSJFL in 2010 evidences to me we play in a very strong competition and we will need to continue to improve all aspects of our club if we wish to have more teams play on the last Sunday of any season.

Congratulations also to our youth girls who competed in the eastern division of the Victorian youth girls competition and they went on to win the 2010 premiership. This is back to back premierships for the girls. A unique achievement by Alicia Eva who last year captained the side and this year coached the side to victory.

Fortunately our main ground, Lucas, was available round 1 and was in perfect condition for the whole season following its redevelopment. We were also fortunate to be granted use of Stanley Gross, Gardiner Park as well as a resurfaced Basil reserve. Unfortunately Waverley Park which we used for the first time in 2009 was unavailable due to resurfacing works. Hopefully we will have access to this ground in 2011.

As a club we are very pleased with the support we received from Stonnington Council throughout the 2010 season as we are fortunate to have enough grounds to accommodate all teams. We look forward to conmtinuing our great relationship with council in 2011

EMJFC Inc. Annual Report 2009 Page 3 of 39 The season had many highlights and it is worth noting a few of them here:

• A record 533 player registrations. • Four Under 9 teams • Three Under 12 team to Under 13 teams • Two teams at Under 14 and for the first time under 16. • One team at Under 15’s • Continuation of the Youth Girls team. • Continued support in 2010 from our major sponsors Marshall White & East Malvern Bendigo Bank • Continuation of a coaches forum and team managers forum • Introduction of the EMJFC Pathways program run by David Arnold and helpers • Knights were selected for Inter league representation for the MSJFL • 8 Knights have made the final squad for the Sandy Dragons Under 18 side • Club nights were very well attended in 2010. We were very lucky to also have AFL players attend these nights. Thanks to Paul Connors for arranging these guests. • Victorian Youth Girls Eastern Division premiership • One MSJFL premiership flag – Under 11 West Division • Attendance at Presentation Day by Mark Jamar to hand out awards and trophies. Thanks to Rob Andriske for organising this. • A successful Presidents dinner where Jason McCartney spoke and gave all parents an insight to his experience in football, Bali bombings and life. • A FANTATSIC NIGHT OF KNIGHTS THAT REQUIRES MORE SUPPPRT IN 2011

EMJFC COMMITTEE It makes a presidents life easy when we have such an amazing committee who give so much time to the club ensuring participation is in an enjoyable, competitive and safe environment.

The 2010 committee contributed tirelessly to the management of the club throughout the year. It is a very important role that each and every member of the committee performs as such I would like to acknowledge the entire 2010 committee for their hard work, enthusiasm and devotion to the various tasks. Being a committee member is often a thankless task and much is done behind the scenes without notice or fanfare.

Marc Gauci vice president & secretary. As a club we are fortunate to have a vice president who has as much passion and commitment to the club as marc. As well as vice president, marc worked tirelessly as club secretary and attended MSJFL delegate meetings with me. Marc is also a board member at Southern Football League.

Rob Andriske continued as treasurer and again undertook the thankless team selection role for all non graded teams. This is one of the most difficult roles and Rob achieved this under some extraordinary circumstances. I must also acknowledge the great work Rob does as treasurer the clubs finances are in good hands

Mick Ahearn continued for the second year as football operations manager and did an outstanding job. To keep the season running from start to end and then coordinate trophies shows your involvement from start to finish and beyond, is an amazing job.

Noel Scully continued as our club registrar and did an outstanding job. Noel ensured that over 500 players were registered and ready to go for Round 1. In addition throughout the year Noel looked after clearances both to and from our club. In addition Noel organised match day permits for our borders to be able to play for their country clubs during school holidays. This is a thankless job which Noel does exceptionally well and has agreed to continue in 2011.

Greg Miller joined the committee this year and has done an outstanding job firstly revamping and then producing Knights News every week. Greg has also revamped the website, produced many club flyers, and undertook the role of club photographer for season 2010 including the team photos for this year. Greg has done an amazing job. Knights News has to be one of the best club publications anywhere!

EMJFC Inc. Annual Report 2009 Page 4 of 39 James Hayne joined the committee in 2010 and took over the role of sponsorship manager. James has done a fantastic job this year in securing new sponsors to the club, either sponsoring teams or on a stand alone basis. He has retained existing sponsors and ensured that sponsors have improved their profile within the club and in our publications. James also worked closely with Kate Gilbert in securing donations for the Night of Knights and raffles at club nights. In addition James has been responsible for the email delivery method of all of our publications.

Kate Gilbert also joined the committee in 2010 as social manager. Kate continued the long tradition of Gilbert family involvement in the mighty knights. Kate worked tirelessly during the year organising our Night of Knights function, club nights and pie nights. All of our functions ran smoothly and were always an enjoyable affair. We will look to build upon and improve our social functions for 2011 under Kates guidance. We need a greater level of support in 2011 of Night of Knights as our major fund raising event.

We have no retiring committee members from 2010 but i am pleased to welcome 2 new committee members for 2011. Given the growth in the club and participation we have been fortunate to have Roy Fish agree to join the committee to assist Mick Ahearn in the role of football operations one of the most demanding roles in a club of this size.

In addition Kristie Stefanac will be joining the committee in the role of merchandising manager. With a club of our size apparel is one of the most important areas of the club. With the upgrade to the website much of our apparel will be able to be sold online in 2011. We will also be looking to expand our range of club merchandise in 2011.

I have agreed to continue as president in 2011 but this will be my last season as president. The main focus i have over the summer is to find a replacement president for 2012. If you are interested in working with me next year and continuing your involvement over the next few seasons please consider this great opportunity.

KNIGHTS NEWS Knights News was revamped and reinvented throughout the season thanks to Greg Miller. I have received very positive feedback from all Club Members on how successful Knights News has been this year. Regular Knight News features included: • Presidents weekly rant • Sponsor, Team, Umpire & Players Profiles • Upcoming Events • Reviews & Match Previews including the Grand Final & Club Awards Special Editions. • East Malvern Bendigo Bank Weekly Scoreboard Results & those great Team reports • 50 & 100 Game Player acknowledgments • Club Award Night Photos

SPONSORSHIP A significant thankyou must be extended to all of our club sponsors for 2010. The whole club appreciates the commitment that all sponsor make to the club to ensure that the future of the EMJFC is sound and that ou children have high quality equipment, facilities and coaching. We could not deliver the high quality experience to all of our members whether they be players or parents without you valuable contribution. As such on behalf of everybody associated with the Knights we wish to acknowledge your support and thank you.

WEBSITE www.eastmalvernknights.com.au The Club’s website continued to improve and score a record number of hits throughout the season. Grge Miller has taken over responsibility for the website and it is now being hosted by Sporting Pulse. A big thank you goes to Dale Smith for his fine work as Grand Web Master and the support of Garry and Warren Smith Motors for hosting the site since its inception.

GRADING, COACHES & TEAM SELECTION IN 2011 The MSJFL will continue with its competition grading policies in 2011 and as a club we hope that these policies will continue to improve in season 2011.

As a result of this formal grading for Under 13’s and above will continue in 2011.

Team selection policies for age groups form Under 9’s to Under 12’s remain unchanged and the club policies of opportunity, position and player rotation remain in place for these age groups.

I am also pleased that we have a number of coaching appointments already in place for 2011. FOOTBALL OPERATIONS (MICK AHEARN)

The football department again focused heavily on our key areas facilities and equipment in 2010.With the addition of 3 new teams investment increased in the areas of footballs, jumpers ( 8 x new sets ),tackling bags, training vests and general training aids. This equipment not only supported our coaches for our 22 teams but also that of the Pathways programme conducted by Dave Arnold.

This year the City of Stonington provided us with 4 venues – Lucas, Basil, Stanley Grose and Gardiner Park. There continues to be some challenges around fixturing with Basil only available from 12.30 p.m due to the facility being used by the dog club. Training schedules ran fairly smoothly and with support from the City of Stonington we were able to have some flexibility with our allocated training nights.

The club hosted both Ashburton and Murrumbeena for a successful series of practice matches in the pre season period. The club also arranged to host all home games for our youth girls and also the training venues for the pathways programme, Mosman Swans visit and the newly introduced Northern Umpires Academy.

The football department was this year responsible for the level 1 trainer’s accreditation course which was attended by 38 parents over a two week period. The club has also employed the services a home ground match day trainer, Bryan who will again be on duty in 2011. I would like to thank all coaches and team managers for their efforts and support through the season. Finally I welcome Roy Fish (committee) to the football department along Graeme Salmon who will provide ground set up and facility support through 2011.

EMJFC Inc. Annual Report 2009 Page 7 of 39 RETIRING COACHES To the 2010 Coaches have decided to hang up their clipboards and retire this year the Club extends our thanks. We appreciate all the hard work done by you and the great contribution made to the development of our young footballers.

ON FIELD SUCCESS The Mighty Knights had a very successful year on the field in 2010 with 21 teams in the MSJFL and our Youth Girls Team in the Eastern Division of the Victorian Youth Girls competition. One of our teams won MSJFL Grand Final and the girls won their second consecutive Grand Final.

Thanks goes to all our wonderful Coaches, Team Managers, Assistants, Trainers, Runners and team match day Officials for their countless hours of dedication at training and on match days.

MSJFL & YOUTH GIRLS BEST & FAIREST RESULTS Congratulations to Alicia Eva who won the B&F for the Eastern, with Fiona Steiert Runner Up B&F. In addition Fiona also won the Eastern Comp leading Goal Kicker with 48 goals. EMJFC also won the best conducted club award for the Eastern Comp.

Congratulations to Lachie Sullivan who was equal winner of the Under 12 West MSJFL B&F

Congratulations to Corey Bruinstroop who was runner up in Under 13 South B&F

MSJFL INTERLEAGUE MATCHES

The MSJFL played interleague matches in June. East Malvern had a number of players who represented our club proudly at the following age groups;

U13 U14 U15 U16 Lachie Sullivan

100 GAME KNIGHTHOODS

Daniel Gauci James Boal Ben Hallam Matthew Hess Charlie Hodge Ed Manton Sam Perkins Jonathan Daggian Thomas Chin

There were also 30 East Malvern players who played their 50th game in the 2010 season

In addition we would like to acknowledge Fiona Steiert who retires after 50 youth girls games.

CONCLUSION Once again in season 2010 I have enjoyed serving as President of this great cub in.

EMJFC Inc. Annual Report 2009 Page 8 of 39 I have again met so many fantastic families who make up our great East Malvern community. I wish to thank all of you for your ongoing support. Again in 2010 I believe that with the total support of your Committee the club has made further small improvements building on the work of past Presidents and committee members.

I still believe that in 2011 we can further develop and improve our great club. We will be better prepared for the MSJFL in 2011 and they know we are a club that has strong views and wants to drive change for the betterment of our club and all of the clubs in the competition.

We have continued with the previous initiatives including two year terms for team coaches, team selection policies for U9 – U12’s, grading at under 13’s and above, satisfactory financial position of our club, growth in numbers and teams, looking to have an East Malvern under 17’s team in 2011 for the first time in the MSJFL competition. This will see the East Malvern club participating in every age division within the MSJFL from under 9’s.

There remain a number of challenges facing the club looking forward:

The current uncertainty about the future of the MSJFL competition as a result of recommendations of the Code report tabled in late 2010 Availability of sporting ovals to accommodate our growth in Stonington Our role in the MSJFL

Pathway from Juniors to Youth to Senior footy A program for our senior elite footballers and skill improvement program for all graded team players. Continued growth of the Girls programme and pathway from Auskick to MSJFL to Youth Girls.

The recruitment of a new President for 2012

I would like to thank the executive of the MSJFL Administrator David Cannizzo for their support in 2010. Thanks to Adrian Fisher, Umpires co-coordinator who has the most difficult job of all. I hope that as a club we will be able to provide more umpires in 2011 and continue to provide support where required on and off the field.

I would also like to thank my family, my wife Jenny, my son Aaron who played what will be his second last season with the Mighty Knights this year, and my daughter Maddie for her patience. I could not do this without all of your wonderful support.

Like last year I would like to thank all the wonderful parents and boys from the U16’s some new and some not so new. I have made life time friendships with so many great families since we came together as U9’s. We have enjoying amazing success together and seen the boys grow from little Auskick kids to the big boys of the MSJFL. To now see many of the boys I had coached perform so well and now attempt to forge an AFL career through the Sandringham Dragons excites me greatly. Good luck to all of these players and their future football endeavours.

I will continue as President in 2011. It is a great privilege to be able to take this club forward.

As I have said all year enjoy yourself on and off the field and remember you are always representing the Mighty Knights

EMJFC Inc. Annual Report 2009 Page 9 of 39 VICE PRESIDENTS / SECRETARY’S REPORT FOR 2009 (MARC GAUCI) This is my third year on the committee and 2nd year as Secretary and I would have to say this has been our most successful year since I have become involved on the committee.

The highlights for me were: • Successful integration into the Moorabbin Saints Junior Football League (MSJFL) – a process which started back in May 2008. • Growth to 19 teams from 18 in 2008. • Premierships for our most senior teams U18 Youth Girls and U15 Boys • Fantastic, visionary and passionate leadership by Lewis Bearman in his first year as President. From day one Lewis promised to bring a greater focus in supporting our Coaches and team management and he delivered on this and took this to a new level in 2009. • Successful negotiation with the City of Stonnington for sufficient ground allocation for 2009. • The compilation of a Club Secretary Manual for use by the Committee.

Personally I have a few projects which I took on which did not get up, the main being our attempt to gain GOLD status in the AFL Victoria Quality Club program (The partnership with the Australian Red Cross Blood Service was part of this initiative).

The loss of our Colts team was disappointing but we now enter 2010 confident that we might have 2 under 16 teams next year.

The integration into the MSJFL was successful but not without our concerns (nor will we give up) on a few key issues such as fixture changes, grading and player movements.

Looking forward into 2010 I have recently joined the board of the Southern Football League. www.sfl.com.au

I was approached by the CEO of the SFL Wayne Holdsworth to join their board and have now officially achieved this as of their AGM on 1 Dec 09.

SFL directly manages 28 clubs and administers the MSJFL and their 25 clubs. SFL will present to MSJFL club delegates in Feb 2010 around much closer relationship going forward.

SFL also manages the Springvale & District Netball Association 14 clubs http://www.sportingpulse.com/assoc_page.cgi?c=1-6238-0-0-0&sID=90775

SFL and MSJFL umpires will merge next year.

SFL plans to expand further with discussions with the Federal District Cricket Association 12 clubs http://www.fdca.net.au/

Extending the work I am involved in with EMJFC, I have already identified two strategic opportunities for SFL:

1) A forum in late Jan 10 where all Councils meet will the SFL and all clubs to discuss ground allocation in 2010 and working collaboratively going forward.

2) Working with all clubs to achieve at least 1 level with the AFL Victoria Quality club program in 2010.

EMJFC Inc. Annual Report 2009 Page 10 of 39

From a presentation at The 2009 Sporting Goods Annual Conference in Oct 2009 titled “Sustainable Australian sport and sports” by Matt Miller (CEO Australian Sports Commission) identified the way forward is: • collaboration, • efficiencies, synergies and economies from a consistent approach to an issue • reducing replication by centralising back office • increasing sponsorship opportunities by increasing the potential for ROI from a much greater target market (SFL have a database of 8500 children and 11500 adults)

This is a role I am very much looking forward to as it still delivers value for EMJFC.

I look forward to seeing you again in 2010

REGISTRAR’S REPORT FOR 2010

With the success of 2009 with 473 players a distant memory the challenge of possibly making 500 was embraced by the committee and delivered by the Knights community. We again had great co-operation from the various Principals and staff at the local schools and used their network to distribute flyers and have the EMJFC promoted to the parents. We were also fortunate to have some very prominent display boards and an improved web presence. Online registration was made available for the first time and over 200 registrations were made using this technology. There were several challenges in securing enough players for various age levels and the players responded to an initiative to invite more of their friends along. This was successful in most age groups in boosting the lists and especially noteworthy was the club being able to field three U10 sides and two U16 sides. In 2010 EMJFC received registrations for 533 playing members. The 533 players were distributed across 22 teams as follows:

Age # Teams # Players Group U9 4 102 U10 3 65 U11 3 70 U12 3 70 U13 3 66 U14 2 48 U15 1 36 U16 2 56 Youth Girls 1 20

TOTAL 22 533

Within the above registrations some demographic facts: • 22 females registered and 511 males registered: o With a small number of female players there is still a large opportunity for the club to offer girls an enjoyable place to learn how to play football and then a transition to the U13-U18 Girls team. o With a very strong local Auskick program, we should be able to continue to attract large numbers in the younger age groups and then work hard to retain as many players as possible through the older age groups • In terms of which schools the players came from:

EMJFC Inc. Annual Report 2009 Page 11 of 39 o Almost two-thirds of the registrations continue to come from players who attended five schools - Malvern Primary , Lloyd St , Caulfield Grammar, St Mary’s and Melbourne Grammar. o The other third of our players attend a large number of other schools o There are increasing numbers of players from some of the private schools and especially in the older age groups • In terms of where the players live: o The vast majority of players are from the local community with more than 70% coming from East Malvern, Glen Iris and Malvern. o We have continued to attract players from the surrounding suburbs with the influence of playing with friends notable in the older age groups.

With the high numbers at U9 level this year, we would expect to possibly have four U9 teams again next year. With a very strong list from the years U16 we should be able to have an U17 side next year. Players do tend to have other commitments such as school sport when they move into the older age groups so our focus going into 2010 will be on: • Getting as many players from this years U14-16 back next year • Securing enough returning player and new registrations at the U11 - U13 age groups so that we can have two teams play through to U16 in the years to come • Continue to field at least 3 teams in each age group from U9. • Build the success of the online registration process and continue to make this easier for parents and maintain a high level of communication with the families promoting our place in the local community.

TREASURER’S REPORT 2010 (ROB ANDRISKE) 2010 was another successful year for the club. Financially the year was again a challenging one given. As such the club appreciated and recognises every sponsorship dollar that was raised, the subscriptions from players and other income throughout the year to keep the club running.

The clubs financial position in summary is as follows;

2010 revenue $140k – main income Subscriptions $94k Sponsors $18k Apparell $16k

We do not run our own bar and/or canteen which other clubs may have as a major source of funds. As such all funds raised by the club come from rego fees, sponsorship, night of knights and hard work. With these funds we aim to improve the football experience for all our sons and daughters.

Major 2010 expenditure

New sets of jumpers & shorts etc costing $19k

Trophies $6k

Stonnington $4.5k

Msjfl/afl/umpires $21.5k

New football equipment including balls $26k

EMJFC Inc. Annual Report 2009 Page 12 of 39

First aid training $4.5k

Any profit we make equates to sponsorship and bank interest. In effect the club runs at breakeven on subscriptions. This year we made a surplus of $33k

2011 objectives are to continue to improve our football equipment, facilities for our players and club & provide further training opportunities for coaches and parents.

Under Nine Blues Looking back on the year, I know each of our players could easily (and probably will) share a highlight from any of the matches over the season. The development of all the players over the year was fantastic to witness and the premiership was the icing on the cake. Whilst we can all be proud of the season the best way to cap off the year was to describe the Lightning Premiership day. This is my take on the day.

Game 1 - Prahran

Fronting up in the first game against the undefeated Prahran was always going to be a battle but the boys played out of their skins in the first half and were unlucky not to put 2 or 3 more goals on the board. Fighting against the wind in the second half was always going to be tough but the boys gave it everything and whilst we went down by a point I think we actually won the game. Smith was on fire, as was Potter and Tommy Miller continued to repel attacks and was bit unlucky not to get a free kick in the dying stages with that thumping left foot he could have got us over the line. Travis Burne had woken from his mid season slumber continually diving on the ball. Fraser Kenny and Tom Cohen were rock solid in defense. Losing Hynes early in the day was going to leave a hole in our structure and meant we needed to keep our boys fresh, particularly as Negri and Hardie were also unavailable for the day.

Game 2 - Beaumaris

A must win game and we really did play like a team destined to go further. Galluci obviously brought something more the Kava back from Fiji as he continually pushed the ball forward. Max Van der Merwe once he found his mouthguard came on and dished out a great handball in traffic and Max Di Cintio was his usual composed self across half back. James McCormack took a couple of great marks to stop their attack. Charlie Morley came off the bench also once the mouthguard was found to add run into the game. The Beaumaris coach said after the game that he thought we were the team to beat so he must have seen something in the boys I eyes.

Game 3 - East Brighton

A team that we had already had 2 come from behind wins against so it was a must we started well and we did. We controlled the game from the first bounce with the wind but to kick a couple into the wind in the second half showed a huge desire to keep going (despite my wife being the only person at the ground wanting to go home). Tommy Bryce's mark and goal put a tear in my eye and then not to be outdone by his little brother Will Bryce's snap in the second quarter sealed the win. Ethan (don't call me Ethan call me Eth or Etho) Duane hit his straps with a couple of grabs and long runs and Hamish Bowen was unstoppable beating 2 or 3 opposition players three times in a row. Tommy Miller was unstoppable in the second half winning just about every clearance. Nick Johns came on and immediately marked and ran his opponent off his legs.

Game 4 - Semi Final (Prahran)

After the narrow loss in the first game, the Mighty Knights were keen for revenge. Smith was told to nullify their best player and not only did he keep him kickless picked up kicks at will. Potter and Richards were again in everything as was Miller but Stefano (Doug Hawkins) Galluci was a standout continually repelling attacks and beating off opponents 2 and 3 at a time. A couple of goals up at half time but kicking into the wind was going to be a tough ask. The boys gave everything and then some. Quin's goal against the wind was unbelievable and the fight shown by Sammy Cohen, Charlie Morley and Campbell McCallum was inspirational. The hip and

EMJFC Inc. Annual Report 2009 Page 22 of 39 shoulder by Richards to protect the running Potter was as good as you will see in football. This is the stuff that wins finals. Great shepherds from Tom Bryce, Fraser Kenny Charlie Morley showed how committed we were as a team. The quiet achiever Max Di Cintio was again cool under pressure with some great clearing kicks and James McCormack was rock solid at full back. A fantastic team effort to hand Prahran their first defeat of the season and onwards to the Grand Final.

Game 5 - Grand Final (the local derby)

They say the good players save their best for the big stage and so it was. Smith again was outstanding as was Potter, Miller and Richards. The Bryce's, both Cohens and Galluci all put in blinders. The Krakour brothers (Matty Vukic and Tom Lyons) combined for a great goal, Toby Russell said before the game he was saving his bets for last and was everywhere across the half forward line. The highlights were everywhere. Jack Potters running goal, Will Bryce's overhead mark at full stretch and pace, Bailey's goal from the boundary line (as Bruce McAvaney would say - "special"), Al Richards attack on the ball, Hamish Bowen in the thick of everything, Galluci working tirelessly, Ethan Duane's saving marks, Travis fighting for every ball. Tom Cohens huge kicks. In the end we prevailed over the Malvern Reds (who were outstanding all day) and we sung the song with them with gusto.

The Coach (and Dad) was very proud of the whole team as was every parent, grandparent, brother and sister there. Well done boys you deserved it.

I can't let the opportunity pass without a few thank you's.

• Nick Smith - A great support act (and 1 for 1 as coach) - Nick always got the kids revved up at training and pre-match stretches and chimed in with words of advice all the way through the year. • Simon Morley - Worked tirelessly and inventively to keep the parents up to speed and organised some great get togethers. It is a thankless job being a team manager but without a good one the whole thing doesn't work. • Scott Duane/Jamie Potter - Helped out all year with running and boundary and at training. • Andrew Richards - for keeping stats and coordinating the votes each week. • Greg Miller - The Steven Spielberg of the team ( the photo's are amazing) • Tracey Cohen/Mel Morley - Our trainers for the year. • All the dad's who helped out at training particularly Scott, Muz, Jamie,Rob Kenny, Mario Vukic.

The parents as a whole were outstanding support for the team, always encouraging and never complaining.

Under Nine Whites

Albert Einstein once said ‘not everything that counts can be counted and not everything that can be counted counts’….meaning what counted this year for the Under 9 Whites was not the scores but rather the smiles, the a ha moments that comes with confidence, the energy of their mateship that followed new nicknames, and finally the camaraderie as a team, things we adults sometimes struggle to measure.

Our team philosophy at the start of the year was based on 4 things – 1) Have fun, 2) Respect everyone, 3) Share the ball and 4) Try your hardest. If success is based on these values and

EMJFC Inc. Annual Report 2009 Page 23 of 39 most importantly wanting to come back next year, then the mighty Under 9 Whites had a magnificently successful year. All the boys want to return !

Eventually as we learnt the skills and game simulation the boys developed 3 rules of their own to complement their weekly awards (Mars Mark of the Day and Bubblo Bill Bump of the Day) . Their 3 rules were a) Team footy b) Tough footy c) Fast Footy with a top-secret game plan to go with each rule.

Not only did the rules work but as the season grew – so did our confidence, and at the Lightning Premiership finale the mighty Whites played the most amazing brand of football any of the parents and coaches had ever seen at this age group – culminating in the Whites outscoring the other 3 teams we played 13 goals to 1 , and missing out on the semi-finals by 1 point to Hampton, who had defeated us by over 5 goals earlier in the season.

The boys and their parents should be enormously proud of the way the Under 9 Whites conducted themselves, as they definitely made our magnificent team manager (Helen Jaensch) and coaches (Richard Lewis and Ben Crowe) enormously proud.

Good luck for next year boys and remember if you want something bad enough and really believe that you can achieve it – miracles can happen. As you boys showed on your last day of Under 9 Whites ; never stop believing….and having fun !

Well done !

Under Nine Reds

Well, after a horrendous start to season 2009 with the first 2 games resulting in consecutive losses, it would have taken a brave soul to predict the Mighty Under 9 Reds would go on to lose only one more game for the season, followed by a narrow loss in the grand final of the Lightening Premiership.

As it turned out, the following statistics resulted for season 2009:

EMJFC Inc. Annual Report 2009 Page 24 of 39

Played 17 games Won 13 Lost 4

Goals for 91 Goals Against 69 Behind for 90 Behinds against 65

Percentage = 132.77%

End of season ladder position – 3rd

Full credit must go to all our players who put in 100% in every game they played. It is always so very important to see the boys finish a game with their heads held high and smiles on their faces – Win, Lose or Draw. I am pleased to say the Mighty Reds were champions when it came to sportsmanship and ensuring that every game we participated in was predominantly about having fun.

Within this compendium, we have enclosed each of the match reports for season 2009 which will hopefully bring a smile to all players faces in many years to come when you look back on the fun times of your childhood and particularly the early days of playing football at which stage every single player has the potential to be a superstar of the future!

By now, everyone will have no doubt recovered from the excitement of lightening premiership day. To say all were exhausted by the time the Grand Final game commenced is an understatement. It was exhausted just watching!

Before signing off for season 2009, I would like to say a big thank you to everyone involved in our team throughout the season as it is fair to say, the more helpers involved in junior football, the more enjoyable it is for everyone.

It seems to me that much credit goes to the coach and players for putting on a great show each week, but I know without doubt, it is all those behind the scenes that determine the enjoyment of junior football for everyone. As with most things in life, we take it for granted when all is going well, but the reality is that if all is not well organized, the entire season can be a miserable experience for everyone. I am pleased to say we had far from a miserable year thanks to great attitudes from all players and parents and terrific support from our Club which again has put on a mighty season for us to benefit from.

• All year Tim Roberts – ably supported by Foti Blaher - has worked tirelessly behind the scenes (often from overseas!) planning for game day and making sure everyone has their roles filled for our Sunday game. A brilliant job well done Timbo!

• Iain ‘Simmo’ Simpson has filled dual roles of assistant coach and runner. Never before has Iain’s fitness reached the levels they are currently at with all the running around he has done this season – especially last Sunday’s efforts where at stages I thought he was about to die!). Thanks Simmo.

• Robin, Karen and Rhonda all did a magnificent job as trainers, ensuring none of our boys experienced any serious injuries during Season 2009. Thanks so much ladies.

• Finally, thanks to all those parents that happily helped out on game day fulfilling their roles without complaint and always with a smile on their faces!

Team awards for season 2009 were awarded as follows:

Enjoy your time off before season 2010, and whilst no doubt teams will be reshuffled next year with half moving up to under 10s and the rest being divided between the three/four under nine teams (as is Club Policy), I wish you all the best and look forward to our paths crossing again – maybe even playing against each other next season! And finally, for those of you that end up being drafted to the AFL in years to come – don’t ever forget your Under 9 Coach!!

Best wishes.

Julian Battistella Grand Final Coach 2009 – Mighty Under 9 Reds

Under Ten Blues

There was an air of the unknown for the entire club in season of 2009, however for the under 10’s and 9’s this was more so given the fact that in these age groups the players were not allowed to . This caused all sorts of difficulties for our boys considering that most of the team had played in the previous 2 seasons with tackling.

Once the season got underway so did our boys, with a strong come from behind win in the first game against Oakleigh. The boys continually improved throughout the year and dropped only the 2 games for the season in the top grade.

The lightening premiership results did not go our way however I think that all concerned were not really sure what to expect and due to our lack of exposure to the competition we were a little out of sorts, that being said in the do or die cut throat game against St Peters (our new old rivals) our boys gave their best and were extremely unlucky not to win.

I would like to personally thank Nic Kourambas for his magnificent job as Team Manager, Pete Mitchell as my Assistant coach and to Mic “Stevo” Stephenson as my runner, these people were a great support throughout the year.

I would also like to thank Lewis Bearman for his support during the season. The boys are fantastic and continually give there all, thank you to the parents that continually helped out during the year, we are fortunate that there are so many to thank that I cannot name them all. Also to all the parents for their ongoing support I thank you.

Tony Phillips Coach Under 10 Blues

EMJFC Inc. Annual Report 2009 Page 26 of 39 Under Ten Whites

The Under 10 Whites had a terrific season. All 22 boys who played over the year developed their football ability and did amazingly well to play under the modified rules of the MSJFL, competing with teams who were accustomed to this. This was demonstrated by some big wins early in the season and a great effort in the Lightening Premiership.

Undefeated in the South Division The Under 10 Whites were undefeated over the season in the South Division. We had 7 games in the South Division and won by an average margin of 4 goals. The most notable thing about this was the terrific team work displayed by the boys. At all times the boys were prepared to help their mates on the ground and share the ball around. At no times did 5 or 6 players dominate the game and it was good to see some of the better skilled players in the team bring other players into the game. The boys were also well disciplined and stuck the team rules where they could. The boys did so well that we promoted them to the West Division for the 2nd half of the season.

Challenges in the West Division Unfortunately the winning streak come to an end in the West Division, but the standard of the football was terrific for the parents to watch. Our boys got close in a few games and competed very well against some of the best Under 10 players in the MSJFL. There was one game where a friend of the coach came to watch for the day – this person could not believe that he was watching Under 10’s football and commented that the disciplines of the Knights boys (smother, shepherd, pressure and team work) were as good as you would see in Under 14’s. Another person commented the skills were better than those recently displayed by Melbourne!

Lightening Premiership The Whites won 2 and lost 1 in the lightening premiership playing in the West Division. This means we didn’t make the semi-finals but the boys had a terrific day with 2 big wins and being able to sing the song twice in 1 day!! The boys did really well and did the club proud.

Looking forward to Under 11’s – all 3 Knights teams will do so much better without the modified rules!

EMJFC Inc. Annual Report 2009 Page 27 of 39 Under Ten Reds

2009 will be remembered as another great year at the EMJFC for the Under 10 Reds, the 2nd under the guidance of Chris Ralph (Coach) and Vince Turner (Team Manager).

2009 saw some 10 new faces join the 15 players who had stepped up from the Under 9 Reds. Five (5) of these were first year players, converts from soccer, rugby, and in a couple of cases, no prior “sporting background” at all.

Thanks to Rob Andriske, the team selections were finalized quickly and smoothly, so it was down to business. The Reds were graded in “South” division, which proved to be a great decision in terms of the team’s development.

The improvement of the team over the season was noted by coaching staff and parents alike. Building on a 7 Win/7 Loss 2008 season, the Reds ended the 2009 home & away season 9 Wins/3 Losses. Perhaps more telling was the fact that those 3 losses occurred in the first 4 rounds, so the team went undefeated the remainder of the season.

In the midst of all this, one of the Season highlights was the Reds trip to Sydney on the June long week-end. This was the 3rd “Battle between the Two Cities”, where EMJFC takes on the Mosman Swans. Thanks to Mosman for hosting us in the midst of “Swine Flu” season in a game which continued the trend of winning “visiting” teams – a 2 point win to the Reds!

All looked set for a successful Lightening Premiership, or so we thought! In what was a great day where the players tried hard all day and the parents remained positive, the 2 point loss to arch rival Ormond proved to be our undoing!

On the playing front, we had strong participation throughout the whole season. On average, each player played 11.5 of the 13 matches, and game-time was spread evenly across the board. A review of the Cold Rock awards, goals scored and Best & Fairest votes confirms the even contribution across the team; each player appearing at least one of these categories.

EMJFC Inc. Annual Report 2009 Page 28 of 39 Under Eleven Blues

Congratulations to all the players. What a great season.

At the start of the season, we declared our aims: to have fun, to learn more about footy, to learn more about how to play the positions, to kick a goal, and to have fun. Now, at the end of the season, we can say we definitely achieved these aims, but for a couple of goals...

The rotation of players through positions allowed our team to learn, understand more and play the roles that go with playing the great game. That sometimes we have the ball... That sometimes they have the ball... That sometimes the ball has to be “ripped” from “no-man’s land” into our possession. That there are times to man up, and there are times to run and create and run and attack. That there are strategic plays out of defence and into attack, around the ground, in the stop plays... and to score. Training was structured around these concepts. Thank you to Jim and Jim M and John P and Michael and all the parents for helping out, and the drop- offs and pick-ups.

It all came together on game day. With Michael W’s team management... and John P’s as trainer, Mark D as runner, Andrew Ha and Trevor B running the boundary, Malcolm S’ work on fixture; Kerry H snapping the pictures; Peter S, Peter S, Angus P, John P, Tim R and Greg H as goal umpires and time keepers; and all our parents for the brilliant help – with transport and drinks and snacks (oranges, snakes and cakes) and child psychology... and any other duties that needed covering.

So what about the fun? This team of footballers played so well! When we got the ball, we had fun. When we tackled and chased... fun. When we shared the ball... more fun. When we kicked the goal... even more fun! We made new friends, with new team mates, and new players (Jackson A and Ben P) to the club. Our 2nd year players (James P, Jake P and Louis S) stepped up to a new level. There were seventeen 50th (Nick H, Sam A, Hugh B, Ant B, Henry BA, Sam D, James H, Oliver H, Chris H, Jake I, Liam M, Lewis P, Archie R, Luke S, Edward S, James W, Jamie W) games achieved through the season, and this is a magnificent milestone. There were barbeques, and a Shallots night, and “cross training” at INTENSITY... just fun Fun FuN!!!

In summing up, we really played great footy. We finished 9 games with more score than the opposition... and did we sing the Club song LOUD!?! YES! YES!! YES!!!

Thanks again to all the parents, and also to the best footy club.
