2009 SUMMER EDITION

NEWSLETTER END OF SEASON - 2018

Dates for the z What a Season z 2019 Season Message from the Chairman – Brendan Lynch What a season indeed! In the first newsletter of the year I said that we would build upon the successes of 2017 – I had no Junior Winter idea how true that statement would turn out to be! We have Nets had an awesome season. We started it having been confirmed as a registered charity and ended it with success after success on and off the field. U10s upwards starts w/c 28th January Our 1st XI retained their Premiership status, the 2nd XI came second in the 2nd XI and runs for 8 Premiership, the 3rd XI finished 2nd in Division 1 and were unlucky to miss out on weeks excluding promotion on a technicality, the 4th XI were promoted (for the second successive season) and the 5th XI was established. half term. Days of the week for each The development of our Junior section and its increasing participation in and age group tbc. contribution to our five senior sides is a fantastic testament to the talent being developed at EMCC by Dom Reed, his team of professional coaches and the many Senior Winter volunteer coaches we are so lucky to have at the club. To highlight some 2018 successes: It was particularly great to see the further development of our Girls’ section; Nets our U9 girls smashed almost everyone that they played and our older girls fought begin Sunday 27th valiantly in two hardball ‘boys’ leagues. Our older boys had some significant January for 10 weeks achievements; we won the Surrey Trust League for the first time ever with a team of U21s and we are also U15 Surrey Junior Invitational League champions. Both leagues Season Opener represent the pinnacle of club for youngsters and so the future of senior cricket Friday 26th April looks even brighter, what’s more our successes demonstrate that we are a club that is joined up from our U5’s to the 1st XI. First Sunday This season we hosted another PCA lunch and match, which raised much needed 28th April funds for the club and we held our first Cricket Week for many years. All of this in addition to some memorable days watching England in the World Cup. My thanks to Last Sunday Mick Whelan for his efforts behind the bar. 1st September 2018 saw the club continue its investment programme – replacing the scoreboard, making improvements to the pavilion and installing a new irrigation system just ahead of the hottest summer on record (thanks Sam). Lots of work still to do but great momentum is being built. Thanks to Emily Boulting for producing this year’s fantastic newsletters. My special thanks to the Committee whom have worked so hard with special mention to my wonderful wife Sarah, Kieran Burge, Sam Burge and Trevor Pearce who have done so much this season again – not to forget our 2018 Volunteer of the Year Sarah MacCarthy. Lastly, thank you to the more than 100 volunteers that give their time to make the club a great place to be and continue to deliver against our guiding objective: To be a Premiership Club at the heart of its community. SAM BURGE, CLUB CAPTAIN

My first year as Club Captain has league to see if we can enter a 5th XI in 2019! absolutely flown by and I’ve enjoyed every moment of what has been a 30 under 18s represented the senior sides in 2018 blisteringly hot summer in many demonstrating the pathway which has been made to ways. encourage juniors to play senior cricket. A huge thank you to Dominic Reed, Andrew Westphal and It makes me very proud to be part of a club which their whole coaching team who continue to turn has grown organically from a club which has today’s junior moles into tomorrow’s senior moles! previously ‘punched above its weight’ to become one of the top clubs in the county. I would also like to thank Nick Marsh and his team for their tireless work on the ground this summer. Our mighty 4th XI led by Paul Gladstone The prolonged heatwave which many of us enjoyed (alongside Rod Porter & Darius Burge) secured creates many challenges for groundsman and Nick’s promotion this season joining the 1st XI & 2nd XI team worked tirelessly to maintain the quality of in the premier division. We have now become one our this time. In the peak of the season of only 5 clubs in the county who have 3 teams in we were able to enjoy over 100 matches at Graburn the premier divisions. Way over less than 90 days which involves considerable effort from all involved! In total 93 players represented the senior teams this year which enabled us to field a 5th XI on 5 The committee has recently given approval for occasions in the summer, a feat which would have additional end-of-season regeneration works on our been laughed at a few years ago! I would to thank very tired square which will hopefully improve the all of the captains who skippered senior sides this pace and bounce throughout our square next year in particular James Ingram & Matt Mugan season. who regularly gave up spots in the 4th XI to offer some experience to the 5th XI. Our senior awards night will be held on Saturday We are already in 8th December and is open to everyone so please conversations with the make a big effort to come down and support the night - details will be communicated shortly!

1ST X1 SECURE PREMIER DIVISION PLACE by Dominic Reed, 1st x1 Captain The first XI Sadly the 1st XI couldn't follow this up in their last maintained their Premier match v relegated Cranleigh. Chasing 257 the Division status with a win at Sutton in moles had some fun in their innings playing with their penultimate match of the season. first attacking intent to come within 21 runs thanks to contributions from Niall Solomon, Sam Burge and half centuries from Dom Reed and Paul Lawford. Paul Lawford helped the Moles to 206 after their 50 overs. Well done to lads on a remarkable finish to the season and staying up! Out in field despite removing a the openers quickly in the power play Sutton did look like they could Leading Runscorers (League): chase down the total with ease. Into the attack came Simon Barrett (424) Frank Knight who ripped through the Sutton line Dom Reed (418) up ending with 5-16 off his 10 overs and putting in Andrew Westphal (388) a match winning performance we have become accustom to in recent years. After bowling Sutton Leading Takers (League) out for 98 this sparked survival celebrations which Jonathan Fawcett (36) was confirmed by other results going our way. Matt Tigg (25) Andrew Westphal (24) 2ND X1 FINISH IN 2ND PLACE by Keiran Burge, 2nd x1 Captain

After two consecutive wins, the 2nd XI finished wickets lost. This win saw the 2nd XI finish the their season with another three against Reigate season unbeaten at Fortress Graburn Way. Priory, Spencer and Malden Wanderers in weeks 16, 17 and 18 of the season. The final game of the season was a short drive to already-relegated Malden Wanderers. Fantastic The bowlers made light work of a strong Reigate knocks from Jason Moore (100) and James Smith Priory batting line up by bowling them out for 119. (60*) allowed us to post our first 300+ total of the Evan Beck was the pick of the bowlers taking the season. Danny Foy then lead the bowlers with 4 top four out and setting up the win. The batters wickets as we bowled them out for 260. finished the game off only 2 wickets down lead by Jason Moore with an unbeaten 57. Spencer’s Unfortunately, those five wins on the bounce were batting line up was again blown away by another not enough to win the league as Wimbledon pipped impressive bowling display. All six bowlers on show us by 2 points. Despite this disappointment, it has sharing the wickets between them as Spencer were been a very enjoyable season with all of the team rolled for 144. Blaine Bannister (72*) and Billy contributing when required at different times. This Dawson (48) then lead the batters home with only 4 correspondent is already looking forward to another crack at the title in 2019.

3RD X1 JUST MISS OUT by Dan Wakeley, 3rd x1 Captain Having beaten Malden Wanderers the previous Aided by Banstead losing both their last 2 games week to go top of the table, the 3rd visited of the season, Molesey 3rd XI finished the season Normandy knowing that winning our 2 in 2nd, just a few points behind winners Malden remaining games would see us win the league, but Wanderers, but with our appeal against the points with the likelihood of a 60-point penalty hanging penalty being unsuccessful we sadly dropped over our heads. Whether it was this distracting us, down to 4th and stay in Division 1. A harsh and or just naivete from our young batters, is hard to disappointing end to what was a hugely positive say, but either way it was very disappointing to season, but it has steeled our resolve to win the bowl so well then fail to chase a relatively division next year and get promoted to the Prem, straightforward 165 on a flat pitch. Toby Porter where we know we belong. deserves special mention for a battling effort with the bat to show the rest of us how it should be done, and a promise of what he can do next season.

We finished the season at home against relegated Valley End, and despite the fall of both our openers early on it was always a fairly comfortable day, with first Greg Brown and then Ed Craig hitting splendid centuries, 115 and 104* respectively. Chasing a target of 305 to win always looked beyond Valley End, though there were a few nervous moments when an over from Greg disappeared for 20+ runs! The batter responsible finished on 107* but no-one else passed 25 and the Moles won by 100 runs. PROMOTED 4TH X1 FINISH THE SEASON IN STYLE by Paul Gladstone, 4th x1 Captain With promotion already achieved with two games With 20pts secured we moved onto the final game to go, the mighty 4s turned their attentions to vs Chertsey knowing that another Molesey win catching league leaders Spencer. The penultimate and a Spencer loss would see us crowned fixture threw up an intriguing tie which saw champions. Spencer visit Imber Court having lost their previous game. Dare we dream of silverware as Having put Chertsey into bat, Jack ‘the swing well as promotion!? king’ Crowther was at it again picking up another 3 wickets, Tiam Afsha 2 and Kieran Downer, The 4s were put into bat with youngsters Tiam Keith Tomlinson and yours truly all with one Afsha (28) and Joe Lynch opening the batting. each, as we bowled Chertsey out for 143. Again After a tentative start the young guns soon got it was our young batsman that led the way with into their stride putting on 50 for the first wicket. Tiam Afsha the outstanding player on this By now Lynch was well and truly seeing the ball occasion scoring 82 with some marvellous stroke as if it was a beach ball and began to unleash a play. We knocked off the remaining runs with 15 devastating attack on the Spencer bowling which overs to spare! But had Spencer lost?? Sadly this saw him smash the ball to all corners as he time it wasn’t to be and we had to settle for the reached 119!! Further runs were added by Ben runners up spot. Lane (24) Louie Goodall (27) and Ranga de Silva (30) as the Moles finished on an outstanding 254 At the beginning of the season and participating off their 45 overs. in division 1 of the 4th XI section for the first Spencer tried to respond but it was now the turn time, mid table would have been a good return of our bowlers to show what for our season’s efforts but to finish second and to they could do with Keiran gain a second promotion in two seasons was Downer, Dylan Parry, Chand unbelievable. The colts made a tremendous Dodhia and Joe Lynch all contribution to the success of the team with collecting two wickets a piece notable performances form Jack Crowther who and the ever present Jack finished with 24 wickets, the second highest in the Crowther picking up league, Dan Sultan 295 runs and Harry Porter another of his 24 wickets for 224 runs for the season and Ollie Mills 16 the season which restricted wickets, one 5 fer. All of the boys that played this the opposition to just 157. season were an absolute credit to the club and testament to our coaching and development program. Finally a big thank you to Rod Porter, Darius Burge and Keith Tomlinson who with a combined age of 200 brought the average age of the side up, encouraged and organised the boys and most importantly provided transport! More Summer Successes

EMCC U9s excelled at the Horsley and Send cricket Tournament 2018 with both teams playing brilliantly.

The A’s won all three of their matches with two games going down to the final over.

Game 1 against Esher was a close fought affair with U7 Theo pitching in as wicket keeper and U8 Isaac showing that age difference has no bearing on ability. Both players were awarded with a match ball for superb play in the field.

Game 2 was even more exciting with EMCC facing a well drilled Horsley. With 9 runs required off the last two overs it became a nervy affair ( for the parents ! ). Emcc went four runs up but with no score board they elected to run the last ball. With the risk of loosing the game they just made it and sealed the second victory !

The final game was a barbarian game with EMCC playing against themselves. This too was a tight game with Ben Millard facing one of our deadliest bowlers, Marcus in the final over. Ben managed to hang on by the skin of his teeth to help secure victory for his side - great effort by both teams.

An excellent season for EMCC Junior Cricket was capped off with the Awards Weekend. It was brilliant to celebrate so many team and personal achievements and I hope you all enjoyed the weekend as much as I did.

Watching the developments of our younger boys and girls is always a pleasure and this year has seen every further growth in how we as a club perform against the best teams in the toughest challenges. A couple of stand outs for me have been the U9 girls going unbeaten this summer and building a fierce reputation in Surrey!! Another standout has been the U15 SJIL team winning the title and seeing so many of them help the senior sides win matches this season.

I look forward to next season and the winter nets already. Have a fantastic Winter!
