Los Angeles/Orange 52nd edition of Page 2 Page 3 Page 2Page 3 (Photo courtesy of LAPL Central Library) Most drivers in the sprawling metropolis of Los Angeles rely on Google Maps, Waze or their car GPS system to navigate the city, but not so long ago, drivers relied on another type of Northern star - one that lived in almost every back seat or glove compartment: Thomas Guide. So what happened to the Thomas brothers and the management of the company that bears their name? And what was the purpose of the guide for L.A.? Let's get it. THOMAS BROTHERS: EARLY BEGINNINGS Thomas Bros. Maps was founded in Auckland in 1915 by cartographer George Kuland and his two brothers. What started out as a company that made wall maps expanded into block, community and tourist maps. Five Five Thomas Guides from the Central Library collection of the Los Angeles Public Library. (Photo by Natalia Chudnovsky/Courtesy of the LAPL Central Library) In 1940, the company moved to Los Angeles at 257 S. Spring St. downtown., where she grew her inventory. Glen Creason, a map librarian at the city's central library who cares about the collection of nearly 250 Thomas Guides, said they originally made folding cards that could fit into a 40s men's suit pocket. In 1945 they started the format of the book that we still recognize today, the size to fit inside the glove compartment. Creason said there were other cartographers in Los Angeles, most notably the Southern California Automobile Club and Gillespie Direction. There were also small companies that sometimes tried to copy thomas Bros. Maps. So Thomas Guides put in fake streets or cities so they can catch copycats. There were a lot of fake surgeries out there... make smaller cards using our data, said Todd Nathanson, grandson of Warren Wilson, former president and CEO of Thomas Bros. Maps. And we would put fake streets on the names of people's children... Pet names... in small dead ends, and that was one way to preserve copyright. In 1955, George Coupland Thomas died without heirs, leaving the company to his widow. That's when the company was bought by its lawyer Warren Wilson and his business partner. The mapping company continued to grow for 40 years under Wilson. In the 1970s, he bought the entire company and moved it to Irvine. Even when Thomas Bros. grew to dominate the West Coast card market, many Angelenos didn't realize that Thomas Bros. was a fairly small company with less than 250 employees. In the 1990s, the company compiled a computer database of its maps with a system for cartographers to update and edit information, a la Wikipedia. It also began selling mapping data to utilities and Cities in California. ATTEMPTED EXPANSION AND THE RISE OF DIGITAL Despite the fact that Thomas Bros. Maps has made strides in the digital landscape and even sold its guides through compact channels, the growth of digital cartographers has changed the game for physical cartographers. At the same time, in the 90s, Thomas made a failed foray into the east coast. According to Nathanson, the attempt to enter the belt was costly, and ultimately the company did not have the brand or resources to compete with the already established cartographers. A big card and Atlas maker called Rand McNally tried to buy Thomas Bros. Maps and Nathanson said his grandfather could see the writing on the wall. Nathanson, who worked in departments at Thomas While in College, and then worked in sales after graduation, stayed on for four more years after the company was sold. He said it has since been bought and sold by venture capitalists. Some versions of the Thomas Guide can still be bought, but for the most part, they have disappeared from fame. I think Thomas Guides is much more important here than most cities, Creson said. Los Angeles is bigger than most cities, he said. When the cars went into mass production, it was the Southern California Automobile Club, not the government that put up the first street signs, but there was still a comprehensive map needed to make the city navigable. INTRODUCTION 1 IGHT NOW I'M READING a book called The Butcher's Boy. It's by Thomas Perry. I don't know too much about him, but I think it's his Rfirst book. I've been reading it two nights now, last thing before I turn out the light. I'm about a third of the way through and it's okay. On the cover there's a picture of a handgun wrapped up in string and paper like a piece of meat, and the words, "The most electrifying novel of hunter and hunted since The Day of the Jackal!" The Washington Post is quoted as having said, "A brilliant suspense thriller, reminiscent of Graham Greene!" The New Yorker called it, "Totally enthralling!" The Chicago Tribune said, "The ending is a gasser!" I wouldn't know. I'm just reading it for the information, in case some day I get around to writing a detective story of my own. Which is preposterous, on the face of it. But there are people like this, people who claim to read detective stories for nothing but what they learn about the law or who claim to dip into dungeons and dragons solely for the history; who buy romances for their exotic settings alone or read outer space fantasies only for the science. But is there anyone left who still believes them? Isn't it acknowledged that these things are read for their blood and macho heroics, for their sex and fantasy? That they're read to kill time? To achieve the uncomplicated and frankly disgusting pleasures of a 'good read'? There are people who make these claims too (and proudly, as though daring you to challenge their 'unbridled hedonism'), but I find them as difficult to believe as those who claim to read detective stories for the facts.

Morgan Grove,‡ and Chona Sister§ ∗School of Human Evolution & Social Change, School of Sustainability, Arizona State University †Department of Geography, Ohio University ‡USDA Forest Service—Northeastern Research Station §Global Institute of Sustainability, Arizona State University This article examines the distribution of parks in Baltimore, Maryland, as an environmental justice issue. In addition to established methods for measuring distribution of and access to parks, we employ a novel park service area approach that uses Thiessen polygons and dasymetric reapportioning of census data to measure potential park congestion as an equity outcome measure. We find that a higher proportion of African Americans have access to parks within walking distance, defined as 400 meters or less, than whites, but whites have access to more acreage of parks within walking distance than blacks. A needs-based assessment shows that areas with the highest need have the best access to parks but also have access to less acreage of parks compared to low-need areas. Park service areas that are predominantly black have higher park congestion than areas that are predominantly white, although differences are less apparent at the city level than at the metropolitan level. Following Iris Young and others, we argue that conceptions of justice must move beyond distributive justice and address the social and institutional mechanisms that generate inequities. For Baltimore, we examine how segregation ordinances, racial covenants, improvement associations, the Home Owners Loan Corporation, and the Parks and Recreation Board created separate black spaces historically underserved with parks.

My fears were unfounded and, in fact, it appears that The Thomas Guides have been improved! Anybody who lives in an area that has been mapped by Thomas Bros knows that The Thomas Guides are excellent and indispensable [The Thomas Guides are such a major part of the culture in southern California that when Thomas Bros changed the pagination of the map books in the early 1990's people involved with deliveries, emergency services, and real estate (houses in SoCal are listed by Thomas Guide pages and grids) had their lives dirsrupted as they had to learn the new page numbers]. It is with great relief and excitement that I tell you that the 2003 edition of the California Road Atlas is much better than previous editions.The good parts of this atlas are still there: the tradtional Thomas Bros Pagefinder map, the excellent coverage of urban areas at smaller scales, the easy to use index with page numbers and grids clearly listed.

    A LIQUEFACTION HAZARD MAP OF THE LAS VEGAS VALLEY, NEVADA CRISCIONE1, J. J., WERLE2, James L., SLEMMONS3, D. Burton, and LUKE4, Barbara A. ABSTRACT The potential for basin amplification of ground motion from significant seismic sources 100-200 km (62-124 mi.) from the Las Vegas Valley (such as the Death Valley Fault System) and Quaternary faults in the valley could provide sufficient energy to cause liquefaction. Key criteria of liquefiable soils coupled with a shallow groundwater table (less than 15 m (50 ft)) are met at several sites in the Las Vegas Valley. To investigate the extent of the liquefaction hazard, a map was prepared from existing data compiled from geotechnical reports, using screening protocols for liquefaction potential. Geotechnical soils reports for the Las Vegas area were screened to establish a database. The data were compiled with geographical coverage of the valley in mind. Emphasis was placed on areas with favorable surficial geology and groundwater conditions. Once established, the data were evaluated using protocol criteria to ascertain the degree of liquefaction hazard present at the site. The final product has been superimposed on the map base used by the Clark County Building Department for other soil constraints mapping in the Las Vegas Valley. Thus, the liquefaction hazard map can be used as a planning tool to indicate whether site-specific investigations for liquefaction susceptibility are warranted. INTRODUCTION It has been clearly demonstrated that the geological and historical record suggests that earthquakes can cause widespread destruction to cities established in young alluvial valleys (Hitchcock et al., 1999). Lew (2001) suggests that a combination of the presence of active seismic faults, young loose alluvium and shallow ground water are the ingredients that could result in the occurrence of liquefaction.
