Research showed that Hildebrand Gurlitt, by 1930, owned two Mueller paintings as well as several works on paper (the latter of which, to date, have not been clearly identified). Several drawings by Carl Otto Mueller depicting similar subjects (such as those described as Mädchen im Freien or Weiblicher Akt am Wasser) are listed in the database of so-called “degenerate” art works confiscated in German museums in 1937. Research showed that this Mueller drawing was probably not identical to any one of those confiscated works. We gratefully acknowledge the help of Tania Pirsig-Marshall in cataloguing this work.
