I love this bookBy S. GreenfieldI love this series of books, its characters are classic enough to be familiar yet detailed and developed enough to keep you interested. The full rush of the swash and buckle is preserved for lovers of classic romance literature and film and yet there is a distinct modern twist. it is also written by an author who clearly loves his city (Paris) and its rich history. the only problem is that they have not made the third book available on the kindle yet and this one ends with a cliff hanger!6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Swashbuckling Adventure!By J. ShurinThe Alchemist in the Shadows is the follow-up to last year's successful swashbuckler, The Cardinal's Blades. Picking up mere weeks after the first book left off, Alchemist plunges headlong back into the world of flashing blades, courtly intrigues, dodgy liaisons and dark magic. In Pevel's take on 17th century Paris, only the complex manipulations of Cardinal Richelieu have prevented France from being overwhelmed by its many foes. France has enemies without (its Protestant neighbours), within (scheming nobles - including the queen's mother) and supernatural (the Black Claw - draconic cultists with an apocalyptic vision for Europe). In the first book, Richelieu was forced to recall Captain la Fargue and his "blades", a group of talented (if unconventional) soldiers. Now, in the second, the Captain and his friends are up to their collective necks in danger. This is a very, very stylish book. Either the reader is willing to commit to the joyous, flamboyant, no-holds- barred swashbuckling lunacy of the series, or the adventure is wasted. If anything, The Alchemist in the Shadows is a slightly more mature offering than The Cardinal's Blades. If the first book was an unrepentant homage to Dumas' creations, in The Alchemist in the Shadows, the reader is introduced to more of Pevel's own talent. A bit more background is revealed - a few more knightly and religious orders come to the front as the world is fleshed out. Even more importantly, we learn more about the backgrounds and personalities of the characters, major and minor. The Blades are all very likeable folk, and, with this book, they also become slightly more differentiated. This is no bad thing - Pevel proves that he's not only able to channel Dumas, but also that he can create something quite impressive with his own voice as well.Mr Pevel is creating a stunning series that mixes plot and style, sword and sorcery, fine dining and fiery dragons. He's clearly got a knack for the convoluted intrigue of the period, but resists the urge to let indulgent detail stand in the way of telling a great story. The Alchemist in the Shadows is the sort of crazily-fun, laugh- out-loud adventure that makes you want to fence with your own shadow, and practice witty repartee in front of the mirror. Speaking a reader, the more of these books that exist, the happier I am.0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. exhilarating twisting thrillerBy A CustomerFrench Cardinal Richelieu knows his country's greatest threat does not come from other nations though he does not ignore their danger. The biggest risk to France's current sovereignty is the Black Claw, a Spanish-based secret group functioning with immunity out of bigger European kingdoms. When Italian spy La Donna offers information on a plot against the throne; the Captain La Fargue, leader of the Cardinal's Blades, accepts her terms in the name of His Excellency. She offers to bring their lethal enemy the Alchemist from out of the shadows that conceal his deadly activities and La Donna insists she can provide details. In exchange for information France needs to keep weak King Louis XIII safe, His Excellency must grant her immunity from arrest and especially protect her from the Black Claw assassins. The second Blades historical fantasy is a terrific blending of political intrigue in early seventeenth century France with draconic magic. The cast is powerful as each of the Blades has different personalities while their enemies especially the shadowy Alchemist seems like a perfect match. Although it helps to have read The Cardinal's Blades to better understand Pierre Pevel's paranormal Paris, readers will enjoy this exhilarating twisting thriller.Harriet Klausner Welcome to Paris, in 1633, where dragons menace the realm. Cardinal Richelieu, the most powerful and most feared man in France, is on his guard. He knows France is under threat, and that a secret society known as the Black Claw is conspiring against him from the heart of the greatest courts in Europe. They will strike from the shadows, and when they do the blow will be both terrible and deadly. To counter the threat, Richelieu has put his most trusted men into play: the Cardinal's Blades, led by Captain la Fargue. Six men and a woman, all of exceptional abilities and all ready to risk their lives on his command. They have saved France before, and the Cardinal is relying on them to do it again. So when la Fargue hears from a beautiful, infamous, deadly Italian spy claiming to have valuable information, he has to listen ...and when La Donna demands Cardinal Richelieu's protection before she will talk, la Fargue is even prepared to consider it. Because La Donna can name their enemy. It's a man as elusive as he is manipulative, as subtle as Richelieu himself, an exceptionally dangerous adversary: the Alchemist in the shadows ... From Publishers WeeklyThis deeply satisfying sequel to 2010's The Cardinal's Blades sends Capt. La Fargue, half- dragon Saint-Lucq, and the rest of the elite team serving Cardinal Richelieu into a complex dance of court intrigue, plots, counterplots, draconic magic, and old enmities renewed. A beautiful Italian spy known only as La Donna offers information about a plot against the French throne, in exchange for the cardinal's protection from both the law and the drac mercenaries of the Spanish secret society the Black Claw. Pevel lets each of his fascinating characters shine in turn while weaving them together in a rich plot with just the right mix of inevitability and surprise. The storytelling is wonderful, but some of the overall feel of this magical alternate Paris has unfortunately gotten lost, and while fans of the first book will enjoy this installment, new readers will struggle to catch up. Katowice : Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Śląskiego Ewa Drab Université de Silésie, Katowice 0000-0002-2340-9269 La coprésence du réel et de l’imaginaire dans Les Enchantements d’Ambremer de Pierre Pevel Abstract: The aim of the present study is to understand the particular relation be- tween the real and the imaginary in Pierre Pevel’s novel Les Enchantements d’Ambremer by analyzing how these two separate modes interact and contribute to the creation of a unique fantasy universe. The author, an important figure of French fantasy litera- ture, has shown predilection for combining history and fancy multiple times also in his other series, such as La trilogie de Wielstadt, in which the Thirty Years’ War is reimagined in the context of a fantasy story. The same model appears in Le Paris de Merveilles, another trilogy incorporating elements of the real in the framework of a fantasy narrative. The structure of the presented world may be interpreted as being composed of several layers or sets, whereby each contributes to the construction of one cohesive universe. The traces of extra- literary reality provide the reader with the point of departure and make the fantasy world more familiar. They also constitute the basis for modifications allowing another version of the city of Paris to be born.
