Background of the project The question of whether law can intervene usefully in support of the traditional arts is not a new one. In fact, it is fundamental to the post- colonial legal discourse, which emerged in its own right in the 1970’s, in response to more and more new states taking account of their national resources—including intangible ones. The international discussion that was launched more than 40 years ago continues to this day, with the Intergovernmental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore (IGC) of the World Intellectual Property Organization providing much of the leadership. -

ANDAYA U:-fIVERSITY OF From an outsider's viewpoint, the diversity of language and ethnic groups scattered through numerous small and often inaccessible islands in Maluku might appear to be a major deterrent to economic contact between communities. But it was because these groups lived on small islands or in forested larger islands with limited arable land that trade with their neighbors was an economic necessity Distrust of strangers was often overcome through marriage or trade partnerships. However, the most . effective justification for cooperation among groups in Maluku was adherence to common origin myths which established familial links with societies as far west as Butung and as far east as the Papuan islands. I The records of the Dutch East India Company housed in the State Archives in The Hague offer a useful glimpse of the operation of local trading networks in Maluku. Although concerned principally with their own economic activities in the area, the Dutch found it necessary to understand something of the nature of Indigenous exchange relationships. The information, however, never formed the basis for a report, but is scattered in various documents in the form of observations or personal experiences of Dutch officials. From these pieces of information it is possible to reconstruct some of the complexity of the exchange in MaJuku in these centuries and to observe the dynamism of local groups in adapting to new economic developments in the area. In addition to the Malukans, there were two foreign groups who were essential to the successful integration of the local trade networks: the and the Chinese. -

But as appealing as the surroundings are, it is what lies beneath the nearby waters that have earned Wakatboi Dive Resort world-wide recognition among diving and snorkeling enthusiasts, and the accolades of conservationists for the innovative conservation practices that were an integral cornerstone of the resort’s founding. Wakatobi is situated within the famed ‘Coral Triangle,” an area between Indonesia, Malaysia and Papua New Guinea that harbors the world’s greatest coral reef bio-diversity. These waters are home to more than 500 species of reef building corals and in excess of 2,000 species of reef sh. The Wakatobi archipelago takes its name from a compilation of the rst two letters of four major islands in the group—Wangi- wangi, Kaledupa, Tomia and Binongko. The reefs surrounding these islands have long been recognized as some of the nest in Indonesia, if not the world. In 2012 the area was designated a UNESCO Marine Biosphere Reserve. Years before any such international recognition, or the founding of the Wakatobi National Park, the founders of Wakatobi Dive Resort realized the unique beauty of this then little-known destination, and also the importance of protecting this natural resource. Soon after locating the beachfront property that would become the resort, they began negotiations with local shermen and villagers, which led to the creation of a conservation program that invested the community in continued health and protection of the reefs. -

The historical approach was used in this study where the Heuristic activities were carried out to collect the main data. Document analysis of books, papers, journals and other relevant writings and interviews with customary figures were done. The results of the study found that the three ulamas came from Minangkabau and expertise in their respective fields and spread Islam. Datuk ri Bandang, who lived in Gowa had expertised in the field of jurisprudence, taught and propagated Islam by using Islamic sharia as its core teaching. -

The Study on Comprehensive Water Management of Main Report Musi River Basin in the Republic of Indonesia Final Report CHAPTER 3 PRESENT CONDITION OF THE BASIN AND BASIC ANALYSIS 3.1 General Natural Conditions The general natural condition described in this section mainly refers to the Musi River Basin Study in 1989, updating the information and data. 3.1.1 Topography The Musi River Basin covers a total of 59,942 km2 in the south of Sumatra Island between 2°17’ and 4°58’ South latitude and between 102°4’ and 105°20’ East Longitude. It covers most of South Sumatra Province, and only small parts of the Bengkulu, Jambi and Lampung provinces as shown in the Location Map. The topography of the Musi River Basin can be broadly divided into five zones; namely, from the west, the Mountain Zone, the Piedmont Zone, the Central Plains, the Inland Swamps and the Coastal Plains. The Mountain Zone comprises the northwestern to southwestern part of the study area and is composed of valleys, highland plateaus and volcanic cones. The Piedmont Zone is an approximately 40 km wide transition belt between the Mountain Zone and the Central Plains. It is an undulating to hilly area with some flat plains. The central plains consist of three sections, uplands, flood plains and river levees. The Inland Swamps comprise the natural river levees and back swamps. The back swamps are less elevated than the river level and flooded during the rainy season. The Coastal Plain comprises the lowlands along the coast and the deltaic northeastern lowlands, naturally covered with peat swamp forest. -

The largest and best documented are the events of 1770 and 1859 in the Molucca Sea region, of 1629, 1774 and 1852 in the Banda Sea region, the 1820 event in Makassar, the 1857 event in Dili, Timor, the 1815 event in Bali and Lom- bok, the events of 1699, 1771, 1780, 1815, 1848 and 1852 in Java, and the events of 1797, 1818, 1833 and 1861 in Sumatra. Most of these events caused damage over a broad region, and are asso- ciated with years of temporal and spatial clustering of earthquakes. The earthquakes left many cit- ies in ‘rubble heaps’. Some events spawned tsunamis with run-up heights .15 m that swept many coastal villages away. 2004 marked the recurrence of some of these events in western Indonesia. However, there has not been a major shallow earthquake (M ≥ 8) in Java and eastern Indonesia for the past 160 years. -

The conflict between two martial arts colleges is very interesting to study. This study aims to identify sources, types of prejudice and ways to reduce prejudices. This study uses qualitative methods with phenomenological approaches and data analysis models of Moustakas. Data collection techniques using interviews, observations and documentation. Data collection techniques used a reasoned sampling technique. The subjects of the study came from the two Pencak Silat colleges in the city of Madiun, with up to four people. The results of this study show that the source of prejudices comes from social differences, conformity, frustration-aggression, social identity, social categories, attribution and stereotypes. The type of bias in the research subject is divided into three types, namely the dominant type, the ambivalent type and the aversive type. The means to reduce prejudices, in this research topic we have used several ways, namely direct intergroup contact, categorization, peace and positive thinking. Chapter 2. The Society and Its Environment The figure on the right is a cantrik, a student who is servant to a priest. INDONESIA'S SOCIAL AND GEOGRAPHICAL environment is one of the most complex and varied in the world. Byone count, at least 669 distinct languages and well over 1,100 different dialects are spoken in the archipelago. The nation encompasses some 13,667 islands; the landscape ranges from rain forests and steamingman- grove swamps to arid plains and snowcapped mountains. Major world religions—Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, and Hinduism— are represented. Political systems vary from the ornate sultans' courts of Central Java to the egalitarian communities of hunter- gatherers of Sumatran jungles. A wide variety of economic patterns also can be found within Indonesia's borders, from rudimentary slash-and-burn agriculture to highly sophisticated computer micro- chip assembly plants. Some Indonesian communities relyon tra- ditional feasting systems and marriage exchange for economic distribution, while others act as sophisticated brokers in interna- tional trading networks operating throughout the South China Sea. Indonesians also have a wide variety of living arrangements. Some go home at night to extended families living in isolated bamboo longhouses, others return to hamlets of tiny houses clustered around a mosque, whereas still others go home to nuclear families in ur- ban high-rise apartment complexes. There are, however, striking similarities among the nation's diverse groups. Besides citizenship in a common nation-state, the single most unifying cultural characteristic is a shared linguistic heritage.
