Abstract: German neo expressionism painting shows a strong tendency to return in the form of expression and painting style, which has made great contributions to the innovation and devel- opment of in and even in the world. Under the impact of the wave of the new era, this school of painting has collided and integrated with various elements from all walks of life, which embodies its unique aesthetic taste and cultural connotation in modern art. Therefore, neo expressionism painting is endowed with the characteristics of the times and plays a unique light in the world art again. This paper will focus on the formation and artistic characteristics of this school and analyze the development of German neo expressionism painting in the new era.

he so-called German neo expressionism is a new school of painting originated T in Germany in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It takes the expressionism of the early 20th century as an example, counteracts pop art and minimalism, and takes self-expression as its main theme. German think that the unique mission of German culture is to explore the meaning of original and spiritual images, which is embod- ied by the exploration of neo expressionism. Neo expressionism painting embodies the great historical tradition of German painting and culture, and is a real form.

1. German Neo Expressionism

(1) The Origin German neo expressionism originated in Germany in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It is a new school of German painting art. It develops from traditional ex- pressionism, but it is different from expressionism. It resists simple and mechanical repetition and imitation. In the passionate art world, these German neo expression- ists brought concrete art to the 1980s, which made the post-war European art get international attention for the first time, and occupied a leading position in the new trend art. (2) Artistic characteristics The creative technique of German neo expressionism is abstract expression- ism. It adopts the direct expression of Minimal Art and the image of pop art. Their works have no limited subject content, pursue free expression and association, and emphasize the frankness and innocence of emotion. (3) Representative artists Georg Baselitz formed an important trend in German contemporary art. He believed that "the most important thing in my life is to continue painting." Different from other neo expressionists, Baselitz paid more attention to the formal features of his works. From his representative works, it can be found that compared with the traditional way of expression, Baselitz had adopted a more bold and subversive ap- proach, using color and rendering effects to show the inverted structure in the pic- ture. This approach is known as the unique character and character of Baselitz. It is precisely because of this unique form of expression that Baselitz also provided a way for the later neo expressionism school of Germany, which attracted more painters to explore its deep meaning. J·rg Immendorfff is also an outstanding painter of German neo expressionism painting school. Different from Baselitz, he mainly used the form of neo expres- sionism to resist the capitalist form at that time, just as he said in the 1970s, "I rec- ognize an art form that can be one of many ways to change human society." For example, in the series of German coffee, he shows Germany in the war by dividing the pictures and plots. At the same time, he also uses colors and strokes to strengthen the influence of the war on Germany at that time, so as to show the au- thor’s anger at the war. is also regarded as one of the representatives of German neo expressionism. His way is different from that of Baselitz and Immendorfff. He draws more on the photographic techniques and uses simple composition to express

Looking at Anselm Kiefer’s works, we can find that the size of his works is large, and the overall color is not obvious, which also shows the au- thor’s dissatisfaction with the society and politics at that time. At the same time, his works use many different elements. Through the recombination and reflection of these elements, the author shows the author’s reflection on the present Germany and a kind of nostalgia and review of Germany in the past. In addition to the three most representative painters of the above, these paint- ers such as Markus Lupertz MarkusL and A.R. Penck are also representatives of German neo expressionism. In their works, the spirit of Germany can be seen. They cherish the memory of national tradition, grasp the post-war trauma of Germany, and try to find the essence of national culture.

2. New Development in the Era of New Media

The artists of neo expressionism painting often integrate their own feelings of the current society into . Through this kind of artistic emotional catharsis, they reflect the criticism and reflection on the current society, which has a strong conceptual and symbolic impact on a large number of artists all over the world. Richter created the obscure expression method of black and white and influenced a group of artists in Germany and China; Baselitz continued to promote and deepen the purity of painting; Punk’s symbolic language brought painting to the real world; Immendorff combined various cross-border elements together, which affected the leader of Leipzig School of painting, lejuoher. Today, new expressionism painting also radiates new vitality. Similarly, German neo expressionism painting style also influenced painters in other countries, such as American painter Eric Fischl. His works also fully reflect the characteristics of neo expressionism, which occupies an irreplaceable position in the history of western contemporary art. China’s neo expressionism painting appeared in the mid-1980s, and an art movement characterized by modernism appeared in the mainland. Because of the social background and environment at that time, many artists at that time resonated with neo expressionism, and nurtured many artists. Among them, the artists repre- sented by Ma Lu, Liu Xiaodong and Shen Ling showed the development of neo expressionism in China. Chinese neo expressionism painters have found suitable soil for their growth, adding beauty to the diversity of Chinese painting.For exam- ple, Chinese artist Chen Xi, greatly influenced and inspired by German neo expres- sionism, initially formed his own painting art style. His works of art strongly show

With the continuous development of modern science and technology, German neo expressionism painting will no longer be confined to art exhibition, but should be combined with the current technology to break the traditional visual effect, so as to attract and guide the artists to continue to think and create the development di- rection of future art.

3. Summary

Generally speaking, the emergence of German neo expressionism is insepara- ble from the change of art trend and artistic pattern in the whole world.The emer- gence of this art form is not only an artistic innovation, but also has an impact on the development of later generations. In the context of the rapid development of culture and art in the new era, people from all walks of life should base on the thinking of the local culture, combine the new era value and the spirit of the times, keep pace with the times, extract the essence from the neo expressionism painting in Germany, learn the spirit of the traditional painting school while learning mod- ern art, and apply it to the professional field, so as to make German neo expres- sionism radiate new vitality in the new era.
