INTERVIEW VIEW VIEW Interview INTER Creating Hope An Interview with Romero Britto, Britto Central he was selected alongside Andy Warhol and Keith Haring for Absolut Vodka’s “Absolut Art” campaign. Romero Britto has since been exhibited in galleries and museums in over 100 countries, including the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux Arts exhibition at the Carrousel du Louvre in 2008 and 2010. In December 2013, Maria Elena and Carlos Slim Domit invited Britto to be the fi rst living artist to ex- hibit at Museo Soumaya. He has created public art installations for the 02 Dome (Berlin), John F. Kennedy Airport (New York), Cirque Du Soleil at Super Bowl XLI, and has been credited with the largest monumen- tal sculpture in Hyde Park (London) history. He served as an offi cial artist for the 2010 World Cup and was recently appointed Ambassador to the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil. Britto’s pop sensibil- ity has since leant itself to many collaborations with such brands as Audi, Bentley, Coca-Cola, Disney, Evian, Hublot, Mattel, and Technomarine, to name a few. Romero Britto is an artistic ac- tivist for charitable organizations worldwide and most of all an artist who believes “art is too important not to share.” He serves as a benefactor, donating time, art, and resources to over 250 charitable organizations and sits on several boards, such as Best Buddies International and St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Britto was named an inaugural founding benefactor of the Harvard International Negotiation Program by Daniel Shapiro, a program that seeks peaceful resolu- tion to modern confl ict. -

UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI FROST SCHOOL OF MUSIC BAND OF THE HOUR BACKGROUNDER The Spirit of Miami The Frost Band of the Hour Marching Band, Pep Band, and Hurricanettes Danceline are the most exciting, visible, and involved student groups on the University of Miami campus. With a long and rich tradition of spirit and enthusiasm, the Frost Band of the Hour supports The University of Miami Hurricanes as part of the ACC Conference. The band performs for more than 70,000 people at Hurricanes football games held at Sun Life Stadium, as well as championship bowl games, nationally televised NCAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball games, March Madness Basketball Tournaments and marching band festival exhibitions. Our History Established in 1933, the Band of the Hour is the official Marching Band of the University of Miami. Dubbed the “Band of the Hour” by a radio announcer during the 1948 Orange Bowl half time show, it was formally renamed the Frost Band of the Hour when benefactors Phillip and Patricia Frost made a substantial contribution to the marching band program. As the largest and most spirited student organization on the University of Miami campus, its commitment to musical and artistic excellence, has allowed the Band of the Hour to maintain a long tradition of service to the university. 2 University of Miami Frost Band of the Hour The Director Jay C. Rees is Professor of Music and Director of Athletic Bands at the University of Miami Frost School of Music. His responsibilities include leading the Frost Band of the Hour, the marching and pep bands of the University of Miami, at UM sporting events such as nationally televised Miami Hurricanes football and basketball games, and expanding the band’s reach and reputation throughout the region. -

ROYAL CARIBBEAN EXPANDS RELATIONSHIP WITH INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED ARTIST ROMERO BRITTO Allure of the Seas to Feature First Britto Gallery at Sea MIAMI – Royal Caribbean International continues to unveil surprising new features and amenities that distinguish Allure from her sister ship, Oasis of the Seas. In addition to debuting the DreamWorks Experience and Chicago: The Musical, as well as a line-up of new dining, entertainment and shopping options, another new venue that will call Allure of the Seas home will be the very first Britto Concept store at sea by pop culture icon, Romero Britto. Royal Caribbean has enjoyed a long relationship with Britto, which began in 2003 when the artist designed the pool deck for the debut of Mariner of the Seas. Marking the next evolution of this partnership, the BRITTO Gallery aboard Allure of the Seas will be an engaging and interactive space for guests to enjoy the color, innovation and spirit which encapsulates Britto’s art. The store will be located in the Central Park neighborhood and will display artwork along with smaller collectible pieces and sculptures of all sizes. A unique sculpture boasting Britto’s well-known butterflies will grace the gardens of Central Park directly in front of the store, welcoming guests and providing a cheerful photo opportunity. Britto will be creating two original pieces exclusive to Royal Caribbean for guests to purchase, including a custom painting, which will be available as canvas giclées, as well as a Royal Caribbean- inspired teddy bear ornament. ROMERO BRITTO (Brasil-Amerikaner) The prince of Pop Art Romero Britto, oder besser gesagt das Britto-Phänomen, verblüfft jedermann. Dieser junge brasilianische Künstler, der häufig mit Andy Warhol und Keith Haring verglichen wird, hat mit seinem eigenständigen Neo-Pop-Stil einen bedeutenden Auftritt in der Welt der Kunst gemacht. Seine Gemälde und Graphiken werden weltweit auf grossen Ausstellungen gezeigt und verkauft. Mit klaren, kühnen Linien und farbintensiven Bildern vermittelt er dem Betrachter ein positives, beschwingendes Gefühl. Romero Britto wurde am 6. Oktober 1963 in Recife/Brasilien als siebtes von neun Kindern geboren. Wie alle Kinder, die sich viel selbst überlassen sind, schuf er sich seine eigene Phantasiewelt, die er begann in Zeichnungen umzusetzen. Eine Aenderung trat ein durch seinen Bruder, der Buchverkäufer war und ihm Bücher von z.B. Toulouse Lautrec mitbrachte, die er dann Tag für Tag kopierte. Im Alter von acht Jahren arbeitete Britto mit allen Materialien, die ihm zu Verfügung standen: Wasserfarben, Bleistift, Tinte und Fingerfarben. Unter den Einfluss des weltbekannten brasilianischen Künstlers Francisco Brennand malte Romero Britto Stilleben in primitivem Stil. Schon als Teenager veröffentlichte er seine Illustrationen in brasilianischen Tageszeitungen. Seine Arbeit wurde erstmals in Brasilia im Rahmen einer Ausstellung vorgestellt: Romero Britto war damals 14 Jahre alt. Die Intelligenz und der Wille von Romero Britto verhalfen ihm Schulwettbewerbe zu gewinnen, die ihm die Möglichkeit gaben, an exzellenten Privatschulen unterrichtet zu werden. Nach Abschluss der Schule studierte er zwei volle Semester Jura und stand dann vor der Frage: Diplomatenkarriere oder die Erfüllung des Traumes Künstler zu werden. Er entschied sich für das zweite. Romero Britto war klar, dass Brasilien für seine Projekte nicht der geeignete Ort war, so zog es ihn 1987 nach Miami/Florida: "Coming to Miami was like being born again!". -

Fiori giganti, farfalle, gatti, cani, coccodrilli sorridenti, cuori che inneggiano all’amore -tutti rigorosamente caratterizzati da colori squillanti, pulsanti, vivi- sembrano provenire da un universo fantastico, sicuramente molto diverso dal nostro, dove non esistono il dolore e la tristezza, ma solo sentimenti positivi, il candore e la spensieratezza che contraddistinguono l’infanzia. E l’intento dell’artista è proprio quello di distoglierci per un momento dalle brutture che assillano il nostro vivere quotidiano, regalarci una ventata di buon umore, di solarità e speranza per il futuro. Per Britto l’arte ha un forte potere rasserenante e tutti devono poterne fruire liberamente: in quest’ottica si colloca l’installazione di molte sue sculture in oltre venti città sparse in tutto il mondo. E’ l’arte che va in strada, verso la gente e non rimane chiusa staticamente ed esclusivamente tra le mura di un museo. Originario del Brasile, nel 1983 intraprende un viaggio in Europa per studiare l’arte dei grandi Maestri. Dopo aver esposto in diverse gallerie, viene incoraggiato ad intraprendere un viaggio negli U.S.A., culla della Pop Art. A Miami apre così un suo spazio espositivo, riscuotendo un enorme successo. -

Spring ’Cane Kickoff 2021 New Student Schedule Please note with consideration of COVID-19 guidelines and in consultation with University policies and procedures, the Spring 2021 ’Cane Kickoff schedule will be as follows. For in-person students, the group meetings will primarily be in-person outdoor events (in which face coverings, physical distancing, and event management is maintained), and remaining sessions will be conducted virtually over Zoom. Remote students will follow the same schedule as detailed below. All sessions will be able to be accessed live over Zoom. In addition, the ’Cane Kickoff program has included many virtual group meetings and social events to assist in their transition to the University. Tuesday, January 19 All Day International Student & Domestic Student Move-In – (Watsco Center Fieldhouse) Students will be assigned a day and a time to move in at the start of the Spring semester. All residential students must take their photo and receive their ’Cane card.
