Many of them are victims of the choices they or others made, which is how their lives become interesting. I aim to see if there is any basis in reality for some of the situations and fears that happen. I also mean that Palahniuk thinks people are afraid of the wrong things, and afraid of too many things in general, and will approach this theory in my discussion. V VI Introduction This thesis has been through an abundance of versions and changed shape and content very many times over the years; from being all psychoanalysis to pure close reading, and ended with a study of victims, fears and reactions. In the end, the amount of close reading that has gone into it has bypassed the use of theory. This is mostly a reaction to past criticism to my over-use of critics, and focusing on that rather than the texts at hand. I find my time disposition in the production process of this paper to be shame, but life will sometimes get in the way of good intentions. As such, I hope that you, dear reader, find my efforts not in vain and take some interest in what my efforts have produced. -

When he goes to investigate he finds two dead bodies inside and it's not clear how either man died. But this is only the tip of the iceberg. There's something going on in Barronville that might be the canary in the coal mine for the rest of the country. Faced with a stonewalling local police force, and roadblocks put up by unseen forces, Decker and Jamison must pull out all the stops to solve the case. -

The inherent contradictions and interdisciplinary scope of his work have given rise to many different versions of ‘Bataille’. However one common feature to the many different readings is his status as a marginal figure, whose work is used to challenge existing intellectual orthodoxies. This thesis thus examines the reception of Bataille in the Anglophone world by focusing on how the marginality of his work has been interpreted within a number of key intellectual scenes. -

Word and Text Vol. IV, Issue 1 26 – 39 A Journal of Literary Studies and Linguistics June / 2014 The Lacuna of Usefulness: The Compulsion to ‘Understand’ Transgressive Fiction Molly Hoey James Cook University, Townsville E-mail: [email protected] Abstract This article takes a brief look at why Transgressive Fiction from the 1990s has been under represented in academic circles and then examines why it was so often misread by reviewers and critics from this period. Transgressive Fiction intentionally frustrates readers using traditional referential modes of criticism by refusing to provide an objective meaning, ideology or structure. This refusal forces the reader to either engage in the text personally or begin a process of rejection and assimilation. This practice can be avoided if Transgressive texts are considered via subjective affectivism (the reader’s reaction and involvement) rather than by the quality of their execution and subject matter. This opens the way for the text to function as a place for consequence-free exploration and the enactment of taboos and their transgression. Keywords: Barthes, Bataille, Transgressive Fiction, value, subjective affectivism The term “Transgressive Fiction” was popularized in 1993 by LA Times columnist Michael Silverblatt1 and has since been used to describe a range of texts which expound the Sadean paralogy of violence, mutilation, cruelty and deviance for the pleasure of the sovereign individual, where the desires of the depersonalizing subject can be projected onto the passive object. This is evidenced in Will Self’s Cock and Bull when Carol assaults her husband with her newly emerged penis: He barely noticed when she turned him over. -

Universidad Católica de Valencia San Mártir) [email protected] 151 Francisco Collado-Rodríguez’s edited collection of essays on Chuck Palahniuk’s fiction adds to the growing academic interest in the writer’s work and, following on from likeminded compendiums published by Cynthia Kuhn & Lace Rubin and by Jeffrey Sartain in 2009, intends to broaden the focus of earlier studies which gave almost exclusive attention to Palahniuk’s debut novel, Fight Club (1996). Although the three essays that constitute Part I of Collado-Rodríguez’s collection are still dedicated to exploring the now well-trodden path of Fight Club analysis, the editor opens up and simultaneously demarcates the scope of the discussion by focusing an equal number of essays on Palahniuk’s 1999 work, Invisible Monsters (Part II) and his fourth novel from 2001, Choke (Part III). Such a concentration of attention on Palahniuk’s early fiction makes sense —in fact, Collado-Rodríguez insists that the three novels chosen for study are “highly representative of the writer’s particular style and insights” (1)— and yet the absence of any commentaries dedicated to Survivor (1999), Palahniuk’s second published work, seems rather anomalous. Indeed, Survivor is something of an elephant in the room, its omission never explained by Collado-Rodríguez, who only comments that it “garnered acclaim among readers and critics, helping to reinforce Palahniuk’s position in the category of cult writer” (2). On Teaching Transgressive Literature
The CEA Forum Summer/Fall 2008: 37.2 Next: Thinking Ecology ON TEACHING TRANSGRESSIVE LITERATURE Layne Neeper The carnivalization of American culture has become ubiquitous as we advance into the 21st century. Shock television from Spike TV to The Jerry Springer Show to Cheaters crowds morning and late-night programming. Unspeakable options catering to every possible desire are provided by the Internet. Fetishized violence, often sexual violence like that found in the Saw franchise, Turista, Seven, and The Watcher, remains a Hollywood staple. Eminem rapped about disemboweling his former wife and record sales boomed. But what happens when the transgressive text is introduced into the more intimate space of the college classroom, when the outrageous �outside� is brought �inside?� More specifically still, what processes and responses typically arise as transgressive novels appear on more and more of our syllabi? Instructors who choose to include Kathy Acker's Blood and Guts in High School, Dennis Cooper's Try, or even those old war horses of the contemporary seminar Lolita or Naked Lunch, often find that when such works are to be taught and discussed in frank and serious-minded ways, there is, on the one hand, typically a surprising resistance, even outrage, on the part of many students who, outside the classroom, are otherwise ardent consumers�as are we all�of whatever the popular culture disgorges for our leisure. Perhaps not unsurprisingly, the �moral laxity� said to afflict our students often hardens into something less tolerant, less pliant, when they confront the written word in the public sphere of the classroom. -

Reading his texts requires a particular disposition on the part of the reader, who is asked to leave the comfort zone, and to enter a universe where we are confronted with the darkest side of a reality which is undeniable, but hardly ever put in the forefront. The narrative world of Palahniuk is thus made up of marginal characters: outlaws, transvestites, addicts (drug addicts, sex addicts, alcoholics), etc. However, instead of treating these transgressive characters as the exception, they become the norm. The concept of normalcy is immediately reversed in a fiction where nothing is what it seems at first sight. And yet, although we may find in his novels stories about “ex-centric” people and situations, we never find a critique from the narrator or the author. Palahniuk defines this as “writing without passing judgment” (Stranger than Fiction). This writing style has been classified as minimalist, but the thematic in his work is rather the opposite, being excessive in all possible ways. As Collado points out, “Violence, self-destruction, parental absence, pornography, the crossing of gender and body limits, are favorite themes of Palahniuk’s fiction since his first published novel” (6). All of these subjects are explored in the chapters that appear in the book. Published by Bloomsbury, Francisco Collado’s volume offers a study of the controversial and bestselling author who is becoming more and more respected by the academic world, as evidenced by the recent publications of two studies on his work, such as Jeffrey Sartain’s Sacred and Immoral: On the Writings of Chuck Palahniuk (2008) and Cynthia Kuhn’s and Lance Rubin’s Reading Chuck Palahniuk: American Monsters and Literary Mayhem (2009). -

WILLIAM FREDERICK II The Dialectics of Class and Postcolonialism in Cities of the Red Night Authors by nature of their writing activities enter into a dialogue with the society that surrounds them, as well as their readers. For postcolonial writers this dialogue also includes the society of the coloniser. Yet, writing is a function of class as well; textual artefacts are inextricably tied to economic conditions past, present and future. All of these elements flicker in and out of focus in the myriad texts that facilitate the legacy of a culture. Texts are microcosms of their attendant culture(s). The academic John McLeod offers some perspective on colonialism’s ongoing influence, saying that “colonialism’s historical and cultural consequences remain very much a part of the present” (p4; TRCtPS). Withdrawal of the coloniser (or imperialist) does not remove, or even perhaps diminish, the socio- cultural effects of colonisation. One way this is reflected is in the colonised culture’s texts. Socio-cultural behaviours as well as the coloniser’s worldview remain in the colonised culture, influencing many streams of discourse flowing through the indigenous culture; domination and influence do not cease being issues when physical presence ends. Postcolonial discourse consists of attempts at “resisting, challenging and even transforming prejudicial forms of knowledge in the past and present” (p5; TRCtPS). The American author William S. Burroughs takes part in such discourse while simultaneously engaging with readers who are not generally perceived as being part of his ostensible audience. In the first two decades of his writing, William S. Burroughs primarily addressed an ‘outsider’ or marginalist audience. -

The World Inverted: Chuck Palahniuk’s fiction as a challenge to neoliberal capitalism A thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English at Massey University, Albany, New Zealand. Louisa Berry 2020 i Abstract In 2019, neoliberal capitalism and its practices appear to be so well-established in Anglo- American countries as to be almost incontestable. Much academic discourse has focused on delineating the features of neoliberal capitalism and diagnosing the effect it has on its human subjects, with many theorists arguing that it produces subjects who are individualistic, competitive and isolated. This thesis aims to determine what role, if any, fiction can play in the wider project of challenging neoliberal capitalist subjectivities. More specifically, it asks: To what extent can the work of one contemporary writer, American author Chuck Palahniuk, challenge his reader’s understanding of their own society and even prompt a transformational impulse within them? This thesis analyses nine of Palahniuk’s novels through the lenses of Marxist theory and contemporary theories of neoliberal capitalism in order to consider how fiction can alter a reader’s understanding of their society. Looking beyond representational content alone, I argue that Palahniuk’s use of stylistic features such as hyperbole, metaphor, symbolism and satire work to unveil and exaggerate aspects of neoliberal capitalism to the reader that have become so normalised that they are often viewed as inevitable or ‘common sense.’ At the same time, inbuilt moments of existential crisis and ambiguous endings work to break through the reader’s routine assumptions as to what is inevitable or important and create moments of uncertainty and doubt about neoliberal capitalism.
