Melnick This study describes existing conditions, evaluates significance and historic integrity, and recommends treatment strategies to preserve historic elements of the Nevada Fall Corridor cultural landscape in Yosemite National Park. It reports findings from field investigation that examined and inventoried landscape features such as stone retaining walls, treadway material, bridges and causeways, and water features on both current-use and abandoned trail segments. The site was examined numerous times over a three-month period, with a followup visit one year later. Libraries and other archives were consulted for written and photographic historic documentation, which were analyzed against current conditions. -

Inventing Yosemite Valley: National Parks and the Language of Preservation Yves Figueiredo ne of the intriguing facts about the giant sequoia has nothing to do with either its size or antiquity, but rather with its name. The species set a record for the number and variety of scientific denominations Oattributed to it by botanists around the world and it took no fewer than thir- teen different designations before Sequoiadendron giganteum was generally ac- cepted. In particular, this debate occasioned a bitter confrontation between British and American botanists. When it became clear that the existence of the tree was not another tall tale from the West, the English adopted in 1853 the term Wellingtonia gigantea to honor the memory of the Duke of Wellington. It would be a mild understatement to say that the Americans did not approve of the choice of an Old World statesman to name a New World wonder and they promptly retorted with Washingtonia gigantea. The current name was fi- nally agreed on when it became apparent that the tree was a cousin of the Coast Redwood Sequoia sempervirens.1 The sheer fact that such a heated debate could have happened over such a seemingly insignificant and rather technical matter shows that the real focus was not so much on the trees themselves as on what they stood for, and on the cultural role that they were to play in the post-Civil War United States. However, even more telling perhaps is the name by which the trees were most commonly designated by the public while the debate was raging in the higher spheres of scientific societies worldwide: sequoias were for every- body the “Big Trees” or “Mammoth Trees.” These names convey images of grandeur, of sheer size, and reveal the perception of the sequoia as above all a monument of nature. -

Roller From the writings of Frank C. Calkins and other sources PREFACE INTRODUCTION Frank Calkins' work in Yosemite was preceded by Yosemite Valley, one of the world's great natural works Henry W. Turner, also of the U.S. Geological Survey, of rock sculpture, is carved into the west slope of the who began mapping the Yosemite and Mount Lyell 30- Sierra Nevada. Immense cliffs, domes, and waterfalls minute quadrangles in 1897 and laid the foundation that tower over forest, meadows, and a meandering river, Calkins' work was built on. Although Turner never creating one of the most scenic natural landscapes in completed this sizable assignment, he recognized the North America (fig. 1). In Yosemite Valley and the differing types of plutonic rocks and, for example, named adjoining uplands, the forces of erosion have exposed, the El Capitan Granite. with exceptional clarity, a highly complex assemblage of Calkins mapped the valley and adjacent areas of granitic rocks. The accompanying geologic map shows the Yosemite National Park during the period 1913 through distribution of some of the different rocks that make up 1916, at the same time that Francois Matthes was this assemblage. This pamphlet briefly describes those studying the glacial geology of Yosemite. Calkins rocks and discusses how they differ, both in composition summarized the bedrock geology of part of Yosemite in and structure, and the role they played in the evolution the appendix of Matthes' classic volume "Geologic History of the valley. -

YosetNte A JOURNAL FOR MEMBERS OF THE YOSEMITE ASSOCIATION Spring 2000 Volume 62 Number 2 An Interview with Superintendent Mihalic Yosemite's new superintendent, David A. Mihalic, has arrived at a critical juncture in the park 's history. The National Park Service proposes that over twenty years of Yosemite planning efforts will culminate soon with the adoption of the much-discussed Yosemite Valley Plan. Interior Secretary Babbitt wants a record of decision by December 2000, so the plan is definitely on the fast track . Given Mihalic's previous successes in developing and implementing man- agement plans, he appears to be a good choice to direct this effort. BY BETH PRATT AN INTRYIIY WITH SUPERINTENDENT MIHALIC The resume of David Mihalic features a list of leader- ship roles in both planning efforts and partnerships throughout the national park system . He has been with the park service since 1972, when he began his career as a seasonal park ranger in Glacier National Park . During his tenure as Superintendent at Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve in Alaska, he completed the park 's first general management plan . He was named the winner of the National Park Service Director 's "Superintendent of the Year" award in 1993 for his work in developing a local biosphere community to protect the natural resources at Mammoth Cave National Park. He returned to Glacier as its Superintendent in 1994, where he led the park in crafting its General Management Plan. While in Glacier he received the Garrison Gold Award for Interpretive Excellence, the Hastings Foundation Annual Leadership Award for developing strong partnerships with gateway communities, and was Superintendent Mihalic with Secretary of the Interior Bruce Rabbit (right). -

240 CLIMBS A~D REGIONAL ?\OTES North America Summary, 1968. Climbing activity in both Alaska and Canada subsided mar kedly from the peak in 1967 when both regions were celebrating their centen nials. The lessened activity seems also to have spread to other sections too for new routes and first ascents were considerably fewer. In Alaska probably the outstanding climb from the standpoint of difficulty was the fourth ascent of Mount Foraker, where a four-man party (Warren Bleser, Alex Birtulis, Hans Baer, Peter Williams) opened a new route up the central rib of the South face. Late in June this party flew in from Talkeetna to the Lacuna glacier. By 11 July they had established their Base Camp at the foot of the South face and started up the rib. This involved 10,000 ft of ice and rotten rock at an angle of 65°. In the next two weeks three camps were estab lished, the highest at 13,000 ft. Here, it was decided to make an all-out push for the summit. On 24 July two of the climbers started ahead to prepare a route. In twenty-eight hours of steady going they finally reached a suitable spot for a bivouac. The other two men who started long after them reached the same place in ten hours of steady going utilising the steps, fixed ropes and pitons left by the first party. After a night in the bivouac, the two groups then contin ued together and reached the summit, 17,300 ft, on 25 July. They were forced to bivouac another night on the return before reaching their high camp. -
