New this year, the Chicago Labor Day tradition will offer more hours of free music than ever before. Headline performers including NEA Jazz Master drummer Jack DeJohnnette, the legendary saxophonist Charles Lloyd, pianist and composer Jason Moran and New Orleans saxophonist Donald Harrison with his Congo Nation Tribe Mardi Gras band. The Chicago Jazz Festival is presented by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) and the Chicago Jazz Partnership, and programmed by the Jazz Institute of Chicago. Every performance is free; this is a completely free admission festival. “We welcome the Chicago Jazz Festival, featuring Chicago talent and prolific Jazz musicians, to its new home at Millennium Park ,” said Mayor Rahm Emanuel. “The city of Chicago has always been proud to foster one of America’s great musical genres. On May 31, drummer Louis Hayes celebrated his 80th birthday and a new album at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola in New York, surrounded by friends, collaborators and acolytes, including drummers Michael Carvin, Nasheet Waits and Eric McPherson, and trumpeters Jimmy Owens and Jeremy Pelt, the latter of whom sat in. Another presence loomed large: pianist-composer Horace Silver, the subject of Hayes’ recent Blue Note debut, Serenade for Horace, a heartfelt tribute to the man who gave Hayes his start in 1956 with “Señor Blues.” It was the beginning of a three-year col- laboration that helped codify both hard bop and the Rudy Van Gelder sound over five albums. Hayes left Silver in 1959 to join the Cannonball Adderley Quintet, but the two re- mained close until the hard-bop progenitor’s passing in 2014. Stints followed with Oscar Peterson, the Louis Hayes-Woody Shaw Quintet, Stan Getz, McCoy Tyner and the Can- nonball Legacy Band, which Hayes leads. Throughout his career he’s solidified a place as one of jazz’s most soulfully swinging drummers, and become a cornerstone of the legacy of Detroit-born percussionists that includes Elvin Jones, Roy Brooks, Frank Gant and Oliver Jackson, and extends forward to Gerald Cleaver. At Dizzy’s, Hayes used his hyper-responsive left hand to goose the soloists in his sextet while keeping the fugitive spirit alive with his right on the ride cymbal. His approach seemed to declare the ensemble’s m.o., which balanced rhythmic ferocity and harmonic adventurousness with a reverence for the Silver sprezzatura. -

WOODY SHAW QUINTET: SUPERB by Eric Myers _____________________________________________________________ The Woody Shaw Quintet The St James, 80 Castlereagh Street, Sydney Sydney Morning Herald, January 21, 1981 _______________________________________________________________ ith the visit of the Woody Shaw Quintet, the jazz activist Greg Quigley has once again enabled Sydney to hear an outstanding W African-American group which is at the apex of the art form. At The St James on Monday night, Woody Shaw sounded very much like the complete modern jazz trumpeter, with a gorgeous tone on the instrument, a willingness to use vibrato, an incisive technique when he chose to use it, and a consummate ability to produce stunning improvised lines. Woody Shaw: sounding very much like the complete modern jazz trumpeter…PHOTO CREDIT TOM COPI Now that Miles Davis is inactive, and Freddie Hubbard has been largely lost in the mire of jazz/rock fusion, Mr Shaw is virtually the supreme trumpeter in the mainstream of contemporary jazz. Other than the leader on trumpet and 1 flugelhorn, the Quintet included Steve Turre (tenor and bass trombone), Mulgrew Miller (piano), Stafford James (bass) and Tony Reedus (drums). The opening number was Bye Bye Blackbird, stated by Mr Shaw with the harmon mute, after Miles Davis. From that first moment, this superb quintet played modern jazz as many of us believe it should sound. The rhythm section, based largely on the warm sound of Stafford James, swung freely, loosely and gently, conspicuously aware of dynamics down to the softest whisper, and capable of the tiniest subtleties. With their version of the lovely old trumpet classic I Can't Get Started, and a bright, boppish treatment of the Cole Porter standard What Is This Thing Called Love? the quintet showed that they were interested in redefining past jazz vocabulary as well as performing contemporary original works. -

Begyndte at spille trompet da han var 11 , og spillede som 18- årig med Willie Bobo og derefter med Eric Dolphy, hvis harmoniske opfattelse påvirkede ham stærkt. Opholdt sig i Paris1964-65 og spillede hér med bl.a. Johnny Griffin, Kenny Clarke og Art Taylor og spillede efter hjemkomsten med Horace Silver (The Cape Verdean Blues; Blue Note, 1965), Larry Young, Chick Corea (Tones for Joan's Bones; Atlantic, 1966), McCoy Tyner og Max Roach (1968-69). Var 1971-72 medlem af Art Blakeys Jazz Messengers (Mission Eternal; Prestige, 1972) og ledede i midten af 70'erne sammen med Louis Hayes en kvintet, der bl.a. akkompagnerede Dexter Gordon (Homecoming; CBS, 1976). Trods sygdom, misbrugsproblemer og svigtende syn havde han igennem 80'erne egne grupper med bl.a. Steve Turre og Mulgrew Miller og aver 1984-85 medlem af Paris Reunion Band. De sidste par år af sit lov var han kun sporadisk aktiv og han døde af komplikationer efter at have mistet sin ene arm ved at falde ud foran et tog i undergrundsbanen i New York. Med udgangspunkt i Lee Morgan og Freddie Hubbard absorberede Shaw påvirkninger fra Booker Little og Eric Dolphy og førte derved det typiske neobop trompetspil et skridt videre imod et rytmisk og harmonisk friere udtryk. Hans spil har siden haft betydning for bl.a. Tom Harrell og Dave Douglas, og det var primært af hans personlige problemer der var årsag til at han aldrig fik den bredere anerkendelse, som hans spils originalitet berettigede ham til. -
