TOURISM50 REMINISCE PHASE EVENTS & ACTIVITIES

Reliving (15, 16, 22 & 23 March)

Showcasing a longstanding attraction and heritage park – Haw Par Villa, this event aims to encourage the public to relive Haw Par Villa in the 1960s through a series of activities:  Free guided tours of Haw Par Villa and talks, curated and conducted in English and Mandarin by local heritage tour specialist, Journeys. Learn about the history of Haw Par Villa and the brothers (businessmen and Aw Boon Par) behind it, and delve into the Asian philosophy, values and beliefs that inspired the creation of the vivid sculptures and dioramas in the park.  Enjoy engaging cultural performances such as storytelling, skits, puppet shows and acrobatic displays that guarantee fun and entertainment for the young and old alike.  Satisfy your taste buds with a mix of local hawker fare of yesteryears and all-time favourites like Ramly Burger and Kweh Pie Tee at the nostalgic-themed food bazaar.  Have a passion for pre-loved clothing and accessories, handcrafted ornaments or vintage collectibles? Come on down to Haw Par Villa and check out the variety of products up on sale at the vintage flea market.  First 1,000 visitors for each day will receive a Tourism50 goodie bag.

Project Postcard To commemorate 50 years of tourism, a series of Tourism50 postcards featuring iconic attractions like Haw Par Villa, Monorail and Raffles Hotel are up for grabs at the ZoCard racks, all community libraries, Singapore Visitors Centre, as well as Chinatown Heritage Centre, all Sentosa ticketing counters and (Tourism Court) from 15 March

onwards. Local residents who mail the postcards to their friends and loved ones will get to enter a Lucky Draw to win one of the following great prizes:

GRAND PRIZE:  2D1N Grand Hotel Suite Staycation at Raffles Hotel Singapore (includes Limousine Transfer + Breakfast & Dinner for 2) x 1 winner

To participate in the Lucky Draw, local residents would have to state their email address, affix a postage stamp on the postcard and drop it into the collection boxes that will be available from 15 March to 6 April at all community libraries, Sentosa ticketing counters, Singapore Visitor Centres, Chinatown Heritage Centre and Singapore Tourism Board office (Tourism Court). The Lucky Draw will be conducted on 14 April 2014 and lucky winners will be notified by email.

The postcards, designed by local freelance illustrator and Architecture student Richard Li, are part of a series of eight illustrations that are his interpretations of how past developments could look like when juxtaposed against present-day surroundings. All designs are available as electronic greeting cards and wallpapers for the public to download at the Tourism50 website at www.xinmsn.com/rediscoversg.

Society of Tourist Guides (Singapore) Free Heritage Coach Tours

In conjunction with the celebration of Tourism50 and International Tourist Guides Day, the Society of Tourist Guides (Singapore) (STGS) will be offering complimentary coach tours on 29 and 30 March to the public. Covering noteworthy landmarks and heritage places such as the Gan Heritage Centre at Bukit Pasoh, Hindu Temple at Tank Road, Jamae Mosque at South Bridge Road, and , the tours will enable the public to learn more about the history of Singapore’s pioneers and the evolution of the local tourism landscape through interesting anecdotes.

The coach tours will be conducted in English and Mandarin by volunteer tourist guides from STGS and last 1 hour and 15 minutes each, beginning from 9.30 am on 29 March and 11.30 am on 30 March.

Latent Spaces @ Haw Par Villa

A series of art projects curated by local arts group Latent Spaces and supported by STB and National Arts Council will be held at Haw Par Villa from April to October this year to enliven the heritage park and encourage the public to continue visiting it. LATENT SPACES aims to broaden the public's perspective towards Haw Par Villa and bridge the gap between past and present.

Demonstrating a creative use of Haw Par Villa as an art space, LATENT SPACES @ Haw Par Villa comprises four art exhibitions that examine the relationship of human societies to objects. With its collection of large-sculptural exhibits, Haw Par Villa is a place with enduring material presence rich for such an analysis. Not only serving as a fodder for contemporary art, Haw Par Villa’s rich history will be made further accessible to the public through guided tours and art workshops tailored to families and young adults. For these activities, LATENT SPACES will partner groups such as Liew Calligraphy, Pekoe Imp and RUS Art Studio. Admission is free.

Schedule for the four art exhibitions:

5 April – 4 May: Nameless Forms is a group exhibition which studies material culture through investigating the past of artifacts. Featuring local artists such as Chun Kai Feng, Sai Hua Kuan, and duo Yunrubin, the exhibition will take place at Jade House at Haw Par Villa.

17 May – 15 June: Materialised Time is a group exhibition which explores the capacities of material objects as conduits for temporal reflections. Featuring local artists such as Joo Choon Lin, Jeremy Sharma and Soo Koon Ang, the exhibition will take place at Jade House at Haw Par Villa.

28 June - 27 July: A Lifetime of Warranties is a solo exhibition by local artist Chun Kai Qun who examines the relationship between material and mental life. The exhibition will take place at Jade House at Haw Par Villa.

8 August - 7 September: Group exhibition featuring artists participating in the Haw Par Villa International Artists-in-Residence Program (details to be announced at a later date).
