ASBI is excited to welcome Dr. Shai Secunda as part of "Seventy for 70". Shai Secunda is Associate Professor of at Bard College, where he teaches in the Religion Department. He earned his PhD at Yeshiva University's Bernard Revel Graduate School, and then held posts at Yale and the Hebrew University of . His research focuses on the Talmud and its Iranian context, and Judaism and its interactions with other traditions. Dr. Secunda is the author of “The Iranian Talmud,” and he writes on Jewish and Israeli culture for the Jewish Review of Books.

Laws of Niddah 5-Week Course with Rabbanit Sara Wolkenfeld

Rabbanit Sara Wolkenfeld is offering a course this spring, starting on Wednesday, May 2, at 8:15 PM, in the Laws of Niddah (the laws governing marital sexuality, menstruation, and mikvah as they exist in the Torah and are developed in ). The class meets at her home (745 West Buckingham) for 5 and covers all of the basic information needed for couples to observe Hilkhot Niddah.

There is a fee of $300 per couple which covers all five classes and any follow- up questions and individual consultation that may be needed. Subsidies from the shul are available to those unable to pay the fee. The course is designed for couples who wish to prepare for married life and is also appropriate for couples who are already married and are looking to refresh their knowledge of Hilkhot Nidah or incorporate it for the first time into their marriage.

This course, or an approved equivalent, is required for all conversion candidates who are in a relationship.

Rabbanit Sara Wolkenfeld has taught Hilkhot Nidah to couples since 2005 and has served as the director of the ASBI Mikvah since July 2013.

This is the only time this class will be offered until the fall and anyone for whom it may be relevant is encouraged to enroll this spring.
