Requirements: Students must have completed SPN 331 for non-literature courses and SPN 386 or 387 for literature courses. Program: • This program is for advanced Spanish speakers at the 300 level • Students take classes with Ecuadorian university students • Class size is 12 to 30 students • Classes are held at the modern Cumbayá campus of La Universidad San Francisco de Quito, a short drive from the center of the city. USFQ, a private Ecuadorian university developed on the American model, was founded in 1985 and has an enrollment of more than 2,500 students. Quito, the capital of Ecuador, is a culturally diverse city with both modern and colonial architecture. Approximate Program • Summer – between $5,200 - $5,500 Costs • Semester – between $9,300 - $9,600 (Office of International Affairs has information on additional expenses – flight, passport and application fees, etc.) Class Schedule: • Fall and winter semesters o Sixteen weeks in length, during which students typically take 4-5 courses o Extended weekends during the semester allow time for visits to indigenous market towns, 17 th century haciendas, volcanoes and national parks. • The summer session o Eight weeks in length during which students typically take three classes o The program includes three trips around Ecuador Course listing: • Phonetics (SPN 320) • Andean History (300 elective) • Art in Hispanic Quito (300 elective) • History of Ecuador (300 elective) • People of the Andes (300 elective) • History of the Latin American Republic (SPN 377) • Introduction to Latin American Issues (SPN 377) • Latin American Culture & Civilization (SPN 377) • Latin American Themes (SPN 377) • Spanish Literature (400 elective) Upon arriving in Quito students take a language exam to determine proper course placement Teaching Staff: • Classes are taught exclusively in Spanish by accredited native Ecuadorian instructors who hold bachelors and/or masters and Ph.D. degrees from liberal arts colleges and universities in the United States. Housing: • Homestays are with host families who provide students with breakfast, dinner, laundry service and a private room.
