EOHSJ -Victoria August 2017 Newsletter pg. 1 Report on Regional Retreat – 29 July 2017 Sixty-Seven Knights, Dames and Chaplains, representing all Australian Lieutenancies, New Zealand, the Philippines, Guam, Taiwan and Malaysia, attended the first Regional Retreat of the Order. Bishop Giacinto Marcuzzo, Vicar General of Jerusalem, was an inspiring Retreat Master leading in reflection and a moving liturgy. Friday evening Vespers and Benediction and Saturday morning Mass in St Mary’s Cathedral Crypt set the atmosphere for the Mass with a wonderful conclusion of Solemn Mass on the Sunday morning.

The opening comments of Bishop Marcuzzo outlined the essence of Bishop Giacinto-Boulos Marcuzzo being a Knight or Dame of the

Holy Sepulchre. First and foremost, the Order is a focus of Christian living to assist Knights and Dames in their search for salvation. Secondly, Knights and Dames as members of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre are one family belonging to the Church of the Holy Land.

In three formal sessions Bishop Marcuzzo developed on his theme of growth as a member of the Order. He moved from discussing the Mystery of Faith and the central role of resurrection, through the meaning of the Cross of Jerusalem, to the connection between Christian life and the Holy land – the Mother Church. All Knights and Dames would have previously been exposed to variations on these themes and at first glance consider them well-known topics. Those at the Retreat were blessed by being led into a deeper and richer contemplation.

The following notes do not do justice to the presentations. They merely outline the thread of the discussion and record the readings which underpinned the presentations. Please consult the readings.

SESSION 1 Reading: Mark 16: 1-8 Regularly reading the bible is a prerequisite for understanding our Faith. In doing so, we fill ourselves with the ideas of God. The first reading is of the resurrection of Jesus. Women were the first to announce the resurrection of Jesus and thus Mary of Magdala can be considered the apostle of the apostles. Life is renewed in the light of the resurrection and Mass is a celebration of the resurrection. Reading: John 21: 13-25 Here the apostles were given an opportunity to see their lives in the light of the resurrection. ‘Do you love me? Then follow me.’ Reading: Luke 24: 13-35

EOHSJ Australia-Victoria August 2017 Newsletter pg. 2 On the road to Emmaus and in the village Jesus is recognised through the breaking of the bread. Members of the Order give witness to the resurrection during Mass: ‘We proclaim your death and resurrection until you come again.’

SESSION 2 The Cross of Jerusalem has evolved with tradition. Originally it was the cross of pilgrims: the large central cross represented the leader (often a Bishop) and the smaller surrounding crosses represented the followers. In the old Nabataean Church the cross was similar to the Cross of James and represented the universal church (the four compass directions of North, South, East and West). The Cross of Jerusalem as we know it was adopted by the Franciscans as custodians of the Holy Land for the Latin Church and, later, by the Latin Patriarchate. Reading: Matthew 10: 16-40 Society is not in peace. We look for liberation (salvation). Romans 8: 19-24 We groan inwardly as we wait to be set free. The parable of the gospels: He sent many prophets; eventually he sent his only son. He became one of us and suffered. He bore the cross and was liberated. The message is to join with Christ and we too can be liberated. Knights and Dames are Commissioned Icon of Our Lady of the to carry the cross for others for their own liberation and Southern Cross presented to Bishop for the liberation of others, including the spiritual Marcuzzo liberation of the Holy Land. How do we live with evil and ensure the victory of good (God)? We live together with evil and need to live together with Jesus Christ. As St Augustine put it, through the cross we can ascend to heaven. Reading: Luke: 14: 17-27 One of the first enemies of the cross is myself (pride). We need to overcome pride to follow Jesus Christ and take up the cross. Without humility, we cannot enter heaven. Jesus Christ is our peace and unites people through the cross. By taking up the cross we destroy the wall of separation, the wall that separates us from salvation.

SESSION 3 This session moved into the connection between Christian life and the Holy Land. We are all exposed to everyday challenges. Nobody has been more challenged than Mary of Nazareth. She was challenged to be the Mother of God; she bore Jesus Christ and was with him through his life. Reading Luke 1:26-28 A Christian is open and not closed into himself. To have Faith is to be open to others and to receive. We must be open to the bible. We must read the bible at least daily. Mary’s life was to live for Jesus. We need to find a point of union with Jesus Christ. Mary received, lived and gave; she followed Jesus to the Cross. It was three women and John who are the living witness of Jesus resurrection – apostles. We have a new view of Christianity – the vocation. Give and live for others. Reading: 2 Corinthians 8: 1-15 Speaking for the Christians in the Holy Land, Bishop Marcuzzo stated: ‘We do not want philanthropy, we want to create a communion’. Give to others according to means. Must go outside of yourself for others, not self. Our vocation is to be a Christian and being a Knight or Dame of the Holy Sepulchre is a call from God – we are called to be a Knight or Dame. We are accepted into the Order by a Cardinal representing the Pope. It is a calling to work for the Holy land and the Mother Church of Jerusalem. A pilgrimage is

EOHSJ Australia-Victoria August 2017 Newsletter pg. 3 to meet the Mother Church, the descendants of the first community of Christ. The Mother Church is the source of Faith. We need to continue the mission of Jesus. Reading: 2 Corinthians 9: 6-15 God loves a cheerful giver. The Christians of the Holy Land are not poor however young Christians would like to emigrate. It is essential to maintain an environment that will keep young Christians in the Holy Land. Christians of the Holy Land are the source of our Faith and the guardians of the Holy Places.

The focus of the Latin Patriarch is to maintain schools and education but there is also recognition of humanitarian needs. Teachers at Latin Patriarchate schools are paid significantly less than their peers in government schools.

There is an ongoing need for prayers for peace and reconciliation.

The condition of Christians in the Holy Land would be worse except for pilgrimages. Supporting pilgrims in their Faith Journey is a source of income for Christians. However, pilgrimage is an opportunity to meet the peoples of the Holy Land and develop personal relationships.

Come and visit the Holy Land!

EOHSJ Australia-Victoria August 2017 Newsletter pg. 4 Forbes, with Fr Simon Grainger in choir. Two seminarians who had been to the Holy Land on scholarship assisted at the Mass. Following Mass and Rosary, Bishop Marcuzzo joined with members over light refreshments then made a presentation about the Holy Land.

Previously on the Wednesday evening, our Grand Prior His Grace Archbishop Denis Hart hosted a small dinner party for Bishop Marcuzzo. Father Cameron Forbes, with two seminarians selected to travel to the Holy Land at Christmas time, hosted lunch at Corpus Christi Seminary on the Thursday and gave a tour of the beautiful and historic Chapel. Bishop Marcuzzo also had a brief meeting at the request of Rabbi Shimon Cowan to discuss promoting peace in the Holy Land. Section Established in Bishop Marcuzzo travelled to Hobart with six Knights and Dames of the Victorian Lieutenancy to establish a Tasmania Section of the Order. Section President-elect Michael McKenna KCHS coordinated the activities and everything went smoothly.

On Friday 4 August at 6:00 pm in the Cathedral Centre, Bishop Marcuzzo made a presentation to the Christopher Dawson Centre for Cultural Studies, an event arranged by Dr David Daintree KHS. Following the presentation Bishop Marcuzzo was guest of honour at a dinner Following the Vigil, Archbishop Julian Porteous and hosted by His Grace Archbishop Julian Porteous Bishop Giacinto Marcuzzo with (left) Victoria Lieutenant and including several local dignitaries. Will Kininmonth KCHS and (right) Section President elect Michael McKenna KCHS. The Mozilla and regalia of the incoming Section Prior, Archbishop Porteous, were blessed during a Vigil that was held in the recently renovated crypt of St Mary’s Cathedral on the Saturday evening. Following the Vigil, several prospective candidates and interested Catholics, with the Victorian visitors, joined His Grace for dinner sponsored by the Diocese.

The inauguration of the Tasmania Section took place at the 10:30 am Mass on Sunday 6 August at St Mary’s Cathedral. Knights and Dames present were in robes and regalia. His Grace Archbishop Julian Porteous was invested as Prior and Knight Michael McKenna KCHS was installed as President. The Tasmania Section is now established and we all pray that it will flourish with time. To the extent possible the Victorian Lieutenancy will continue to nourish the growth.

There were emotional moments after the Mass. Bishop Marcuzzo had given his Homily in English, Italian and Arabic. Italian migrants greeted the Bishop and a number of Iraqi refugees who have taken up residence in Hobart were particularly grateful to be spoken to in their own language.

Bishop Marcuzzo then travelled on to Adelaide and Perth

A special thanks to the Knights and Dames who travelled to Hobart for the initial Information presentation and/or who took part in the Installation of the Section.

EOHSJ Australia-Victoria August 2017 Newsletter pg. 5 Grand Prior’s Golden Jubilee On Saturday 22 July 2017, many members of the Order, with a large gathering of family, friends and parishioners, joined our Grand Prior His Grace Archbishop Denis Hart, as he celebrated Mass in St Patrick’s Cathedral on the golden jubilee of his ordination. Refreshments followed with tribute speeches given by, amongst others, Knights Francis Moore and Julien O’Connell.

The celebration was a fitting endorsement to the life-long commitment of His Grace to the Archdiocese of Melbourne and the more generally. Recruitment of New Members Plans are firming up for a visit to Australia by the Grand Master, Edwin Cardinal O’Brien in September 2018. When his schedule is settled and the dates for his visit to Melbourne are confirmed we will be able to plan for our Vigil and Investiture. This will be a wonderful opportunity for new members to be invested by the Grand Master.

Please make every effort to make the mission of our Order known in your local Parish community and amongst your catholic friends. We will again be holding an Information Night in the New Year. I am available to provide further information and necessary documentation to assist any interested in joining our Order. Welfare You are also asked to remember in your prayers Knight Bill Ward KHS who is continuing his medical treatment.

Please bring to my attention any members who need our prayers and comfort, either through illness or advancing years. We pray that we can assist members who have generously contributed to the mission of our Order in their time of need. 2019 Pilgrimage to the Holy Land During his visit I discussed with Bishop Marcuzzo how we might make pilgrimage a more meaningful experience, particularly from the perspective of Knights and Dames. He provided several suggestions, including closer contact with the people of Nazareth and a visit to the Seminary at Beit Jala.

With Chaplain Fr Simon Grainger and our Tour company, I will begin to develop a program for a Pilgrimage to the Holy Land in May 2019. Easter Sunday in 2019 falls on 21 April so the likely period will be the first two weeks of May following the Latin and Orthodox celebrations.

Pilgrimage is a wonderful opportunity to strengthen spiritual ties with the Mother Church and to meet with the guardians of the Holy Places. Now is the time to begin giving thought to joining the pilgrimage. Catholic friends and family are welcome to join us, particularly if they are interested in the work of the Order.

Please Email me if you have an interest. If May 2019 does not suit then I have dates of Pilgrimages being organised by other Australian Lieutenancies that you might like to join.
