Cinema, democracy and perfectionism CRITICAL POWERS Series Editors: Bert van den Brink (University of Utrecht), Antony Simon Laden (University of Illinois, Chicago), Peter Niesen (University of Hamburg) and David Owen (University of Southampton). Critical Powers is dedicated to constructing dialogues around innova- tive and original work in social and political theory. The ambition of the series is to be pluralist in welcoming work from different philosophical traditions and theoretical orientations, ranging from abstract concep- tual argument to concrete policy-relevant engagements, and encourag- ing dialogue across the diverse approaches that populate the field of social and political theory. All the volumes in the series are structured as dialogues in which a lead essay is greeted with a series of responses before a reply by the lead essayist. Such dialogues spark debate, fos- ter understanding, encourage innovation and perform the drama of thought in a way that engages a wide audience of scholars and students. The Presence of Performance and the Stakes of Serial Drama: Accrual, Transience, Companionship Elliott Logan MPhil (University of Queensland, 2013) BA, Hons (University of Queensland, 2009) BA (University of Queensland, 2007) A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2018 School of Communication and Arts Abstract This thesis shows how performance is a critically neglected but crucial aspect of serial television drama as an art form. One of serial drama’s obvious storytelling attractions is its ability to involve viewers in relationships between characters over long periods of time. Such involvement takes place through a recurring structure of episodes and seasons, whose unfolding reflects the extensive, ongoing history through which interpersonal bonds form and develop, deepen and decay. The characters we watch onscreen are embodied and performed by actors. Television studies, however, has persistently overlooked screen performance, hampering appreciation of serial drama’s affinity with long-term relationships as a resource for aesthetic significance. Redressing such neglect, this thesis directs new critical attention to expressive stylistic relationships between serial form, screen performance, and the subject of companionship in some recent US serial dramas. The focus of that attention is a particular aesthetic quality: the provisional, which emerges through serial drama’s distinctive tension between permanence and transience. In the first chapter, I argue that the provisional is central to an affinity between screen performance, seriality in television drama, and companionship as an aspect of human life. Chapters Two and Three then show how the art of the provisional in particular series has been underappreciated due to television studies’ neglect of performance and expressiveness as dimensions of serial form in television fiction.

These disparities are examined in the light of history, economics, geography, demography and culture. Wealth, Poverty and Politics is also a challenge to much that is being said today about income distribution and wealth concentration— a challenge to the underlying assumptions and to the ambiguous words and misleading statistics in which those assumptions are embedded, often even by leading economists. This includes statistics about the much-discussed “top one percent.” This revised and enlarged edition should be especially valuable to those who teach, and who want to confront their students with more than one way of looking at issues that are too important to be settled by whatever the prevailing orthodoxy happens to be. A true gem in terms of exposing the demagoguery and sheer ignorance of politicians and intellectuals in their claims about wealth and poverty . Dr. Sowell’s new book tosses a monkey wrench into most of the things said about income by politicians, intellectuals and assorted hustlers, plus it’s a fun read.

It will also relate it with our present time and cultural context in order to prove how this genre allows, because of its specific characteristics, the treatment of contemporary concerns and issues. This study will analyze the television drama series The Americans from a cultural perspective that tries to show the relevance of the series within the cultural context of the first decades of the 21th century. The focus will be placed on the portrayal of the main characters, their family and their personal relationships as both public and private human beings in a society which tends to be extremely demanding with its citizens. Television series The Americans (FX, 2013-2015) follows the conventions of the realist trend in spy films such as The Spy Who Came In From the Cold ( Martin Ritt, 1965) or Tinker, Tailor, Soldier and Spy ( Tomas Alfredson, 2011), both based on novels written by John le Carré, even though these conventions are changed, mixed and distorted.

  • Ending on a Sour… Er… Sober Note?” Nehemiah 13:4-31 31 August 2014
“Ending On a Sour… Er… Sober Note?” Nehemiah 13:4-31 31 August 2014 Maybe you’ve heard the expression, “Jump the shark.” It is a phrase that was originally used to denote the tipping point at which a TV series is deemed by the viewers to have passed its peak, or has introduced plot twists that are logically inconsistent in terms of everything that has preceded them. Once a show has “jumped the shark,” the viewer senses a noticeable decline in quality or feels the show has undergone too many changes to retain its original charm. The term has also evolved to describe other areas of pop culture where people, actors, authors, etc seem to lose their edge and they are on an obvious decline. Where did the phrase “jump the shark” originate? The term comes from a Happy Days episode centering around Arthur Fonzarelli, also known as Fonzie, or the Fonz. Remember Fonzie? Fonzie was the cool, womanizer who could woo all the ladies with his love and looks. Fonzie would take your girl right outta your arms just by looking at her! He was that cool! Straight out of your arms into the arms of the Fonz. Well, there is an episode of Happy Days where the Fonz is waterskiing in the ocean, with perfect hair and wearing his famous leather jacket, and he jumps over a shark in the ocean. So the Fonz is waterskiing in the ocean, he sees a shark fin, the viewer is terrified because we think the Fonz is gonna get eaten by a shark, and what does Fonzie do? He does what only the Fonz could do: he jumps over the shark! Hence, the expression, “jump the shark.” That episode was the beginning of the end for Happy Days.
