Glamorgan Botany Group 2017 Excursion Report With the end of the BSBI’s date-class inching closer, our six excursions this year all focused on 1km squares with precisely zero post-2000 records in the BSBI’s database, and over the course of our visits we recorded plants in 24 of these squares. As always, it is difficult to pick highlights, but April’s Ceratochloa carinata (California Brome) and September’s Juncus foliosus (Leafy Rush) certainly rank among the most significant discoveries... although those preferring plants with less ‘specialist appeal’ may have chosen the fine display of Dactylorhiza praetermissa (Southern Marsh Orchid) in June or the array of bog plants in July and September! Of course, we’re always sharing tips on plant identification, and this year provided plenty of opportunities to do that too – so if you want to get to know Glamorgan’s plants better, then keep an eye out for our 2018 excursion plan, which we’ll send round in February. David Barden, Karen Wilkinson and Julian Woodman Barry – Saturday 22 April On a bright, sunny, warm day, 10 botanists met to explore the open spaces in and around the old villages of Cadoxton and Merthyr Dyfan, now well within the urban area of Barry. Starting in a small area of grassland next to our meeting point, we found a few species of interest including Medicago arabica (Spotted Medick), Lactuca virosa (Great Lettuce), and Papaver lecoqii (Yellow-juiced Poppy, identified by its yellow sap). Moving into Victoria Park (shown on old maps as Cadoxton Common), we found a good range of species of short grassland, with pale- flowered Geranium molle (Dove’s-foot Cranesbill) resulting in an examination of the characteristics separating it from G. -

Croat., Vol. 7, No. 3., 227¿274, 1998, Zagreb Researching the vascular flora of the Po`ega Valley and the surrounding mountains, alto- gether 1467 plant taxa were recorded. An analysis was made of which floral elements particular plant taxa belonged to, as well as an analysis of the life forms. In the vegetation cover of this area plants of the Eurasian floral element as well as European plants represent the major propor- tion. This shows that in the phytogeographical aspect this area belongs to the Eurosiberian- Northamerican region. According to life forms, vascular plants are distributed in the following numbers: H=650, T=355, G=148, P=209, Ch=70, Hy=33. Watsonia 25: 289–298 (2005) NOTES Watsonia 25 (2005) 289 Notes NORTH WALES SPECIES OF RUBUS L. (ROSACEAE) IN THE ISLE OF WIGHT In 1982 two sizeable populations of Rubus effrenatus Newton, a species up till then (and still) otherwise known only in north-west Wales, v.cc. 46–49, were discovered in the Isle of Wight, v.c. 10, at a distance of 11 km from each other. One population is near the Island’s southernmost tip, mainly among bracken along a crescent of gravel overlying the chalk on the north face of Head Down but with an outlying patch in a deep ‘green lane’ about 1·4 km to the north-west. The other site is towards the Island’s south-east corner, along a much-frequented public footpath forming the north boundary of Sandown Golf Course, a relic fragment of a once-extensive tract of partly- wooded acid ground that constituted Blackpan and Lake Commons. The species is unrepresented in Rubus collections made in these two localities by 19th century specialists in the genus, and that negative evidence, taken together with a subjective impression that both populations have expanded slightly in the years since their discovery, could be interpreted as indicating a relatively recent arrival in each case (Allen 2003). Though the two may have had independent origins, it is equally possible that one population has been derived from the other – in which case that on Head Down seems the more likely to be the parent colony. In 2002–4 two successive finds of another Rubus species provided a near-duplicate of this very unexpected national distribution pattern. -

Hypericum also displays an ample variety of other biological actions, such as hypotensive, analgesic, anti-infective, anti-oxidant, and spasmolytic abilities. However, recent investigations highlighted that this species could be advantageous for the cure of other pathological situations, such as trigeminal neuralgia, as well as in the treatment of cancer. This review focuses on the in vitro and in vivo antitumor effects of St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum), its derivatives, and other Hypericum species in hematologic malignancies. -

HERBARIUM COLLECTION BY SAVA PETROVIĆ IN THE HERBARIUM OF THE NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM IN BELGRADE MIROSLAV JOVANOVIĆ Natural History Museum, Njegoševa 51, 11000 Belgrade, Serbia, e-mail: [email protected] The General Herbarium of the Natural History Museum (BEO) includes part of the herbarium material collected by the great Serbian botanist Dr Sava Petrović (1839-1889). Considering the importance of S. Petrović’s work for the botanical science of the 19th century, his herbarium has an important position from both a scientific and a museological standpoint. This herbarium collection has been conserved and inventoried. It was determined that it includes 648 herbarium sheet covers with 629 plant species, and the average age of the museum specimens is around 130 years. Key words: Sava Petrović, Herbarium, Natural History Museum, Belgrade INTRODUCTION The General Herbarium of the Balkan Peninsula at the Natural History Museum in Belgrade (BEO) includes collections of mosses, fungi, lichens and higher plants. The largest collection is the Collection of Higher Plants, 68 JOVANOVIĆ, M.: HERBARIUM COLLECTION BY SAVA PETROVIĆ with over 160,000 herbarium sheet covers and more than 500,000 specimens distributed in 2210 herbarium boxes. In addition to the “A collection” of type material from the treasury of herbarium at the Natural History Museum, the oldest collections prepared by the pioneers of Serbian botany, Dr Josif Pančić and Dr Sava Petrović, must also be mentioned. -

THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHAPEL HILL TASK FORCE ON LANDSCAPE HERITAGE & PLANT DIVERSITY nd 2 EDITION APPROVED BY THE CHANCELLORS BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS COMMITTEE February, 2005 This report is the product of a more than one-year-long effort from concerned members of the University of North Carolina community to ensure that the culturally, historically, and ecologically significant trees and landscaped spaces of the Chapel Hill campus are preserved and maintained in a manner befitting their beauty and grandeur. At the time of this writing, Carolina is in the middle of the most significant building and renovation period in its history. Such a program poses many significant challenges to the survival and well-being of our cherished trees and landscapes. This report attempts to identify, promote awareness, and provide guidelines for both the protection and enhancement of the grounds of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Furthermore, this report is intended to work within the framework of two earlier documents that help guide development of the campus: the 2002 UNC Master Plan and the 1997 Report of the Chancellor’s Task Force on Intellectual Climate at UNC. We hope that members of the university community as well as outside consultants and contractors will find this information both useful and pertinent.
