Abstract The Calcium Looping (CaL) process, based on the carbonation/calcination of CaO, has been proposed as a feasible technology for Thermochemical Energy Storage (TCES) in Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) plants. The CaL process usually employs limestone as CaO precursor for its very low cost, non-toxicity, abundance and wide geographical distribution. However, the multicycle activity of limestone derived CaO under relevant CaL conditions for TCES in CSP plants can be severely limited by pore plugging. In this work, the alternative use of calcium-rich steel and blast furnace slags after treatment with acetic acid is investigated. A main observation is that the calcination temperature to regenerate the CaO is significantly reduced as compared to limestone. Furthermore, the multicycle activity of some of the slags tested at relevant CaL conditions for TCES remains high and stable if the treated samples are subjected to filtration. This process serves to remove silica grains, which helps decrease the porosity of the CaO resulting from calcination thus mitigating pore plugging. -

Commodity Summary Aluminum, the third most abundant element in the earth's crust, is usually combined with silicon and oxygen in rock. Rock that contains high concentrations of aluminum hydroxide minerals is called bauxite. Although bauxite, with rare exceptions, is the starting material for the production of aluminum, the industry generally refers to metallurgical grade alumina extracted from bauxite by the Bayer Process, as the ore. Aluminum is obtained by electrolysis of this purified ore.1 The United States is entirely dependent on foreign sources for metallurgical grade bauxite. Bauxite imports are shipped to domestic alumina plants, which produce smelter grade alumina for the primary metal industry. These alumina refineries are in Louisiana, Texas, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.2 The United States must also import alumina to supplement this domestic production. Approximately 95 percent of the total bauxite consumed in the United States during 1994 was for the production of alumina. Primary aluminum smelters received 88 percent of the alumina supply. Fifteen companies operate 23 primary aluminum reduction plants. In 1994, Montana, Oregon, and Washington accounted for 35 percent of the production; Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee combined to account for 20 percent; other states accounted for the remaining 45 percent. The United States is the world’s leading producer and the leading consumer of primary aluminum metal. Domestic consumption in 1994 was as follows: packaging, 30 percent; transportation, 26 percent; building, 17 percent; electrical, 9 percent; consumer durables, 8 percent; and other miscellaneous uses, 10 percent. -

Abstract: There are abundant diasporic bauxite resource in China. The gravity separation and flotation process are utilized for treating this kind of ore. When the ore grinding fineness is -200 mesh 80%, the qualified bauxite concentrate can be obtained, and it contains Al 2O3 71.62%, SiO 2 8.94%, and its Al 2O3 recovery rate is 75.43%, A/S is 8.02.Compared with single flotation process, it can be reduced for the dosage flotation reagent and the cost of mineral processing. Introduction China's bauxite resources are rich, the amount of resources of 1.914 billion, ranking the fifth in the world, but more than 80% are medium and low grade ore, Aluminum silicon ratio (A/S) between 4 to 7 of the bauxite accounted for 59.5%. These minerals can not meet the basic conditions for the production of alumina by Bayer process. (A/S>8) [1]. The vast majority of China's bauxite belong to high-alumina, high-silicon, fine-grained embedded diaspore-type bauxite, so the bauxite is difficult to concentrate. -

INTRODUCTION The generation of industrial solid waste constitutes an environmental problem that requires efforts for adequate disposal. Currently, in Brazil, solid waste management is standardized, with a classification determining the management according to its hazardous characteristics. ABNT NBR 10004 is a Brazilian Standard to solid waste and classifies its as: Class I (hazardous), Class II - A (non - hazardous and non - inert) and Class II - B (non - hazardous and inert) according to the concentration of elements that have potential risks to the environment and public health (ABNT NBR 10,004, 2004) A process with a large generation of wastes is the production of copper. Several studies in the last decades investigated routes to recovery copper and other metals of interest from the slag (solid waste from the foundry). In the case of primary production, the slag has copper contents between 0.5 and 2% and the volume generated is twice the refined metal (Schlesinger et al., 2011) In addition to primary copper production, there is a significant rate of the copper production from scrap/waste metal. Secondary copper production in Brazil in 2014 reached 23,600 tons, representing around 9% of domestic production. -

Red mud represents one of the metallurgical by-products more difficult to dispose of due to the high alkalinity (pH 10–13) and storage techniques issues. Up to now, economically viable commercial processes for the recovery and the reuse of these waste were not available. Due to the high content of iron oxide (30–60% wt.) red mud ranks as a potential raw material for the production of iron through a direct route. In this work, a novel process at the laboratory scale to produce iron sponge ( 1300 C) or cast iron (> 1300 C) using blast furnace ≤ ◦ ◦ sludge as a reducing agent is presented. Red mud-reducing agent mixes were reduced in a muffle furnace at 1200, 1300, and 1500 ◦C for 15 min. Pure graphite and blast furnace sludges were used as reducing agents with different equivalent carbon concentrations. The results confirmed the blast furnace sludge as a suitable reducing agent to recover the iron fraction contained in the red mud. -
