Barto approached then-athletics director Brad Rothermel to work out a solution to the problem and the two settled on the current location, where the old softball field had previously existed. Once the site was fi nalized, a huge community effort was instrumental in the building of the soccer fi eld. The fi eld is named after the late son of Kenneth F. been played on its pitch and it is also the site of the annual UNLV/Nike Soccer Classic for both the men’s and women’s squads. The facility has also played host to three Las Vegas Soccer Spectaculars. The inaugural contest in 2002 featured the WUSA’s San Jose CyberRays and the San Diego Spirit, while in the spring of 2003, the Boston Breakers took on San Jose. The fi nal spectacular was in March of 2003, between UNLV and the Mexican Olympic Team, who had just claimed a spot in the 2004 Athens Games. In the spring of 2007, a sellout crowd watched the fi rst-ever MLS contest on the UNLV campus, The Rebel Alumni Park, dedicated in 2002, was made possible as Real Salt Lake and the Colorado by the efforts of alumni and friends of the Rebel soccer program. Rapids played to a 0-0 draw in an exhibition contest on March 31. In 2012, the UNLV men’s soccer team posted its 150th victory at the site, achieving the milestone in the fi nal home game of the year. The Rebels eclipsed the century mark in 174 games over 16 years. With the addition of endzone seats in 1997, the grandstands now offer seating for approximately 2,500 spectators in an open seating arrangement, and the facility boasts natural grass, a press box, and lights for night matches. The facility was upgraded during the summer of 2006, as a $300,000 renovation led to a new irrigation system as well as new sod and grass for the fi eld. The 2014 season saw an addition of 90 feet long shade structures on the North side to further enhance the fan experience, while parking was expanded as well with an extra 125 spaces. Generally regarded as one of the top facilities in the West, Johann Field celebrates its 33rd season in 2015.
