HERO FIGURE IN POOR SOCIETY AS SEEN IN CHARACTER OF JAMES J. BRADDOCK IN MARC CERASINI’S CINDERELLA MAN. Yogyakarta: Department of English Letters, Faculty of Letters, Sanata Dharma University. This thesis discusses a novel entitled Cinderella Man which was written by Marc Cerasini. This novel was written based on the movie Cinderella Man which won 4 awards. This novel tells about the struggle of James J. Braddock as a boxer and also as a father in Great Depression era. These struggles bring him to the Heavyweight Championship which makes him become the hero figure of people in Great Depression. Therefore, this thesis focuses on the significance and role of the hero figure that can change the way of thinking in Great Depression poor society through his struggle for his dream and his family, also for everyone. This thesis has three objectives. The first objective is finding out the characteristics of James J. Braddock. The second objective is to identify the ways James J. Braddock is accepted as a hero figure in poor society of Great Depression. The last objective is finding out the significances of James J, Braddock as the hero figure in his society. The writer conducts library research to collect the data for the thesis. The writer also uses the data from the internet and the books of literature which are connecting the topic and the novel. In doing the analysis, the writer takes three steps. The writer uses the socio-cultural historical approach to analyze the problems because the thesis is really connected with the condition and characteristics of the poor society in Great Depression, also the history of Great Depression itself with the effects that it is caused. The analysis results three matters. First, the characteristics of James J. Braddock are responsible, honest, charitable, brave, modest, unbreakable and inspiring. These can be seen from James action and other characters action. Second, James J. Braddock is accepted as a hero figure because of his unbreakable characteristic in leading himself, family, and his condition to face the crisis and his undefeated characteristic to influence the poor society through the unity in the family and giving strength to society. Third, the first significance of James is giving inspiration to the poor society of Great Depression. The second significance is defeating the impossible thing in Great Depression and the last significance is sacrificing himself to the poor society of Great Depression because the fight he takes is not about his fight anymore but it is about everyone’s fight. x ABSTRAK CHRISTO SYLVANO (2009). Skripsi ini membahas sebuah novel berjudul Cinderella Man yang ditulis oleh Marc Cerasini. Novel ini ditulis berdasarkan film Cinderella Man yang memenangkan 4 penghargaan. Novel ini menceritakan tentang perjuangan James J. Braddock sebagai seorang petinju and juga seorang ayah pada era Depresi hebat. Perjuangan-perjuangan ini membawa dia kepada Kejuaraan Kelas berat yang membuat dia menjadi pahlawan dari orang-orang di Depresi hebat. Oleh karena itu, skripsi ini berfokus kepada fungsi dan peran seorang pahlawan yang dapat mengubah cara berpikir masyarakat miskin di Depresi hebat melalui perjuangannya untuk mimpinya dan keluarganya, juga semua orang. Skripsi ini memiliki tiga permasalahan. Permasalahan pertama adalah menemukan karakteristik dari James J. Braddock. Permasalahan kedua adalah mengidentifikasi cara-cara James J. Braddock diterima sebagai tokoh pahlawan didalam masyarakt miskin Depresi hebat. Pemasalahan kedua adalah menemukan fungsi-fungsi James J. Braddock sebagai pahlawan di dalam masyarakatnya. Penulis melakukan studi pustaka untuk mengumpulkan data bagi skripsi ini. Penulis juga menggunakan data dari internet dan buku-buku sastra yang berhubungan dengan topik dan novel. Dalam mengerjakan analisis, penulis melakukan tiga langkah. Penulis menggunakan pendekatan sejarah, budaya dan masyarakat untuk menganalisa permasalahan-permasalahan karena skripsi ini sangat berhubungan sekali dengan kondisi dan ciri khas masyarakat miskin di masa Depresi hebat, juga Depresi hebat sendiri dengan akibat-akibat yang disebabkannya. Analisa menghasilkan tiga hal. Pertama, karakteristik James J. Braddock adalah bertanggung jawab, jujur, penyayang, pemberani, rendah hati, tak mudah menyerah dan menginspirasi. Hal-hal ini dapat dilihat dari tindakan-tindakan James dan tindakah tokoh-tokoh yang lain. Kedua, James J. Braddock diterima sebagai pahlawan karena sifat yang tak mudah putus asa dalam memimpin dirinya,

Polansky Stanton Glantz, PhD CENTER FOR TOBAccO CONTROL RESEARCH AND EDUCATION UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO SAN FRANCISCO, CA 94143 April 2007 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Smoking among American adults fell by half between 1950 and 2002, yet smoking on U.S. movie screens reached historic heights in 2002, topping levels observed a half century earlier.1 Tobacco’s comeback in movies has serious public health implications, because smoking on screen stimulates adolescents to start smoking,2,3 accounting for an estimated 52% of adolescent smoking initiation. Equally important, researchers have observed a dose-response relationship between teens’ exposure to on-screen smoking and smoking initiation: the greater teens’ exposure to smoking in movies, the more likely they are to start smoking. Conversely, if their exposure to smoking in movies were reduced, proportionately fewer teens would likely start smoking. To track smoking trends at the movies, previous analyses have studied the U.S. motion picture industry’s top-grossing films with the heaviest advertising support, deepest audience penetration, and highest box office earnings.4,5 This report is unique in examining the U.S. movie industry’s total output, and also in identifying smoking movies, tobacco incidents, and tobacco impressions with the companies that produced and/or distributed the films — and with their parent corporations, which claim responsibility for tobacco content choices. Examining Hollywood’s product line-up, before and after the public voted at the box office, sheds light on individual studios’ content decisions and industry-wide production patterns amenable to policy reform.

ISSN: 1492-3831 September – 2009 Teaching and Learning Against all Odds: A Video- Based Study of Learner-to-Instructor Interaction in International Distance Education Jean-Marie Muhirwa Equitas – The International Centre for Human Rights Education, Canada Abstract Distance education and information and communication technologies (ICTs) have been marketed as cost-effective ways to rescue struggling educational institutions in developing countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This study uses classroom video analysis and follow-up interviews with teachers, students, and local tutors to analyse the interaction at a distance between learners in Mali and Burkina Faso and their French and Canadian instructors. Findings reveal multiple obstacles to quality interaction: frequent Internet disconnections, limited student access to computers, lack of instructor presence, ill-prepared local tutors, student unfamiliarity with typing and computer technology, ineffective technical support, poor social dynamics, learner- learner conflict, learner-instructor conflict, and student withdrawal and resignation. In light of the near death of the costly World Bank-initiated African Virtual University (AVU), this paper concludes by re-visiting the educational potential of traditional technologies, such as radio and video, to foster development in poor countries.     Biography He was born Maximilian Adelbert Baer in Omaha, Nebraska, the son of German immigrant Jacob Baer (1875-1938), who had a Jewish father and a Lutheran mother, and Dora Bales (1877-1938). His older sister was Fanny Baer (1905-1991), and his younger sister and brother were Bernice Baer (1911-1987) and boxer-turned actor Buddy Baer (1915-1986). His father was a butcher. The family moved to Colorado before Bernice and Buddy were born. In 1921, when Maxie was twelve, they moved to Livermore, California, to engage in cattle ranching. He often credited working as a butcher boy and carrying heavy carcasses of meat for developing his powerful shoulders. He turned professional in 1929, progressing steadily through the ranks. A ring tragedy little more than a year later almost caused him to drop out of boxing for good. Baer fought Frankie Campbell (brother of Brooklyn Dodgers Hall of Famer Adolph Camilli) on August 25, 1930 in San Francisco and knocked him out. Campbell never regained consciousness. After lying on the canvas for nearly an hour, Campbell was finally transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital where he eventually died of extensive brain hemorrages. An autopsy revealed that Baer's devastating blows had knocked Campbell's entire brain loose from the connective tissue holding it in place within his cranium. This profoundly affected Baer; according to his son, Max Baer, Jr., he cried and had nightmares over the incident for decades afterwards. He was charged with manslaughter. Although he was eventually acquitted of all charges, the California State Boxing Commission still banned him from any in-ring activity within their state for the next year.

    Journal of African American Males in Education Spring 2015 - Vol. 6 Issue 1 Against All Odds: From Prison to Graduate School Rebecca L. Brower Florida State University This case study explores an often overlooked phenomenon in the higher education literature: Students transitioning from prison to college. The case presents the unique story of an African American male who made a series of life transitions from federal prison to homelessness to community college to a historically Black university, and finally to a predominantly White institution for graduate school. These transitions came as the result of successful coping strategies, which included social learning, hope, optimism, information seeking, and meaning-making. Some of the policy and research implications of ex-convicts returning to higher education after imprisonment are also considered. Keywords: African-American, Black, college access, prison, transition A middle-aged African American male named Robert Jones sits in a community college classroom feeling overwhelmed and unsure of himself. He has been released after spending ten years in federal prison for drug trafficking. After prison, he was homeless for a period of time, but now he is sitting in a community college classroom thanks to his own efforts and the local homeless coalition’s program to help ex-convicts gain housing, employment, and education. He vividly describes his experience on his first day of community college: I tell you, I swear my head was hurting. I’m serious. I was, like, in class, you know, like Charlie Brown, I had sparks going everywhere. I was like, it’s like that came to my mind and I was like now I see how Charlie Brown feels.
