Parsonally Speaking ...

Dear beloved Church family, God is good all the time, all the time God is good! On the week of May 20th I had the immense joy and privilege to travel with Michaela Marinos to Blaine Memorial United Methodist Church in Seattle, WA to attend the National Japanese American United Methodist Caucus annual gathering. This annual event gathers pastors, laity, seminarians and friends from all over Washington, Oregon, and California area Japa- nese American congregations together for fellowship, worship, and spiritual renewal. It was a time of shar- ing delicious food like and Salmon, and learning from speakers such as Tom Ikeda (https:// densho.org) and retired Bishop Roy I. Sano. We had a great time reconnecting and sharing conversations about how God is shaping our churches across the country. The main focus of our time together was the theme of “legacy” and how to remember and carry on the teachings from our Nikkei generations. The hard work, determination, and courage of our churches’ Nikkei should never be forgotten. The injustice they experienced as American citizens during World War II is a reminder to us of our need to speak out against the injustice we see today from discrimination, abuse face of in justice but to find strength from the leader- and violence. We should not be idle witnesses in the ship of the past. It is undeniably wrong for our coun- try to repeat the same mistakes of history. I was also delighted to be accompanied by Michaela, our church’s youth and SS leader. Michaela was able to share great ideas with fellow youth directors and deepen her understanding of our UM eth- nic caucus. We are deeply grateful to DeAnn Yamamoto and her hospitality, allowing us to sleep over for the few days we visited Seattle. Michaela and I also had the fun experience of visiting Uwaji- maya Japanese market near Safeco Field before returning home to Spokane. If you ever find yourself in the International Dis- trict of Seattle, you must stop by Uwaji- maya for their amazing groceries and food. Thank God for retreats and beauti- ful weather! May God bless you this summer with sun- shine and joy. —-Pastor John Highland Park Tayori Page 3 June/July
