It was written by Vern and it is the first in-depth study to be published on the complete creative output of Steven Seagal. He is clearly a fan of the action legend and it shows in his reviews for each of his films. I literally cannot watch a Seagal film now without this trusty tome next to me. On Deadly Ground was always more funny than anything; I always loved how he preaches environmentalism in this movie by blowing up an oil rig and killing hundreds of people… because that will really help the environment. This book explores all of these themes but also the recurring theme of bar fights and how many times glass is shattered… which pretty much happens in EVERY Seagal Seagalogy: The Ass-kicking Films of Steven Seagal. Remember this peach from On Deadly Ground? Try this: delve down into the deepest bowels of your soul. Try to imagine the ultimate fucking nightmare. So yeah, there are sections of the book which actually focus on these moments of greatness and are always hilarious. Overall, Seagalogy is a fun read and Vern has proven himself a hugely entertaining writer; if he comes up with more books then I would happily pick them up immediately. Log In. Remember Me. Seagalogy: a Study of the Ass-Kicking Films of Steven Seagal by Vern Hollywood can breed a whole army of action heroes that save the day or the world, dragging us to the edge of our seat and back. But for some people one star shines brighter: Steven Seagal. But hands up — how many have actually seen one of his films, let alone his complete output? Is that foolish oversight or a criminal miscarriage of justice? Just as well the mighty Vern is on hand with his fun-filled bible, Seagalogy, to read and relish. Forget those false fist-flying prophets of Van Damme, Stallone and Bruce Willis, come and worship at the altar of the one true action idol…. With the obsession of a fan and the authoritative tone of a professor, Vern takes us through every film with attention to plot, themes, dialogue, influences and even politics. He transforms Seagal into an auteur worthy of world-class status and raises the geek to the level of quip-making scholar. A lucrative move for him and a good reason for Vern to launch into his crusade. Ad — content continues below. It means that the completists in us all are treated to a breakdown of his concerts and adverts too. Seagalogy feels in part like a bad-ass interloper on the scholarly shelves but Vern demonstrates how, like its subject, the book can blend in and go native. After reading it, you might never need to see a Seagal film again. Or you might just feel compelled to watch his whole body of ass-kicking work. It might even help you win the specialist round of Mastermind. Unless Mr. Seagal has got there first. Skip to main content area. This is a good book, but it ain't THAT good. I guess since this is the only legit book on the work of Seagalogy: The Ass-kicking Films of Steven Seagal Seagal, hardcore fans can't help but go overboard in praising it. Also, the irony of having a talented writer treat Seagal's filmography as a serious "body of work" makes the book seem funnier than it really is. Vern Seagalogy: The Ass-kicking Films of Steven Seagal an honest-to-God Steven Seagal fan yes, those do exist who takes a sincere interest in every facet of the big guy's career. Whenever he gives Seagal a hard time, it comes across as a Seagalogy: The Ass-kicking Films of Steven Seagal ribbing rather than a genuine put-down. There is much about Seagal to both admire and criticize, and Vern is one of the few people to maintain a fair balance between the two. The big problem with this book, though, is that the majority of it consists of plot summary. If you are already familiar with Seagal's movies, the constant barrage of story details gets old quickly. If you're trying to figure out which Seagal movies you should watch, this book will spoil the plots for you. The only people to whom I would whole-heartedly recommend this book are those who prefer to read about Seagal's movies rather than watch them. Unfortunately, I'm not sure many such people exist. Vern goes through each film in detail and provides a certain amount of commentary on what works and what doesn't. Most of Seagalogy: The Ass-kicking Films of Steven Seagal humor comes from him pointing out plot holes and various absurdities the average viewer probably missed. It's also great for clarifying the confusing elements found in each movie, which is no small matter because several of Seagal's films have been cut, re-edited, and stitched together worse than Frankenstein's monster. For me, the best part of the book was at the end, when Vern provides an overview of all the specific traits that make a Seagal Seagalogy: The Ass-kicking Films of Steven Seagal a Seagal movie. I think he's right when he says that Seagal's movies carry a specific imprint and wouldn't work with a different lead actor. View 2 comments. Feb 06, Mickey rated it it was amazing. Vern is not only my favorite film critic, he's one of my favorite writers period. This book is funny, but this is not pages ripping apart Steven Seagal, nor is it in any way intended to be ironic. Vern understands that a great deal of what Steven Seagal does is unavoidably laughable, but he also very clearly has a sincere love of these movies. This b Vern is not only my favorite film critic, he's one of my favorite writers period. This book is akin to having a particularly funny and intelligent friend explain in detail all of Steven Seagal's movies, pointing out the bad edits, story inconsistencies and just plain stupid, ridiculous or absurd plot points but also telling you exactly why these movies are awesome despite them. Jan 12, Jeremy rated it really liked it Shelves: humorfilmborders. This Seagalogy: The Ass-kicking Films of Steven Seagal have worked if it was just some troll making fun of Steven Seagal, but thankfully Vern, delight though he often may in spotlighting the man's numerous limitations, clearly feels true affection for the beefy limbsnapper. The conversational profanity detracts far more than it adds, but "Seagalogy" is funny, thorough, and even insightful. A bittersweet climax of sorts in which Vern briefly meets Seagal brings it all to a nice close. Unlikely to win over new converts, but if like mysel This wouldn't have worked if it was just some troll making fun of Steven Seagal, but thankfully Vern, delight though he often may in spotlighting the man's numerous limitations, clearly feels true affection for the beefy limbsnapper. We will survey forms of social organization (e.g. the caste system, the religious roles of women, monastic life), and the practices and beliefs of Hindus & Buddhists, including their origin myths, rites of passage, and their ethical values. The course is designed around major conceptual themes: discerning between illusion and reality; spiritual journeys in search of religious experience; death and the afterlife; religion, gender, and sexuality; monasticism, asceticism, and the hermit’s life; and the effects of colonialism and modernity on religions. In particular we will examine the religious and political reforms of Mahatma Gandhi and the Dalai Lama, two of the most important leaders of the last century. The non-violent ideals of Gandhi and the Dalai Lama present us with an alternative to our modern consumer-oriented technological culture, where people seek what they are programmed to seek. This course will help you become more informed and critical of how the news media represents other religions and their role in different societies, rather than be passive consumers of the media. You will learn to really “Think Different,” as the Apple advertising campaign once put it (see p.

  • Combating Russian Disinformation in Ukraine: Case Studies in a Market for Loyalties
COMBATING RUSSIAN DISINFORMATION IN UKRAINE: CASE STUDIES IN A MARKET FOR LOYALTIES Monroe E. Price* & Adam P. Barry** I. INTRODUCTION This essay takes an oblique approach to the discussion of “fake news.” The approach is oblique geographically because it is not a discourse about fake news that emerges from the more frequently invoked cases centered on the United States and Western Europe, but instead relates primarily to Ukraine. It concerns the geopolitics of propaganda and associated practices of manipulation, heightened persuasion, deception, and the use of available techniques. This essay is also oblique in its approach because it deviates from the largely definitional approach – what is and what is not fake news – to the structural approach. Here, we take a leaf from the work of the (not-so) “new institutionalists,” particularly those who have studied what might be called the sociology of decision-making concerning regulations.1 This essay hypothesizes that studying modes of organizing social policy discourse ultimately can reveal or predict a great deal about the resulting policy outcomes, certainly supplementing a legal or similar analysis. Developing this form of analysis may be particularly important as societies seek to come to grips with the phenomena lumped together under the broad rubric of fake news. The process by which stakeholders assemble to determine a collective position will likely have major consequences for the * Monroe E. Region in focus: Bucharest-Ilfov Bucharest-Ilfov Region, formed by Bucharest, Romania’s capital and Ilfov County – is located in the central part of the Romanian Plain in southern Ro- mania. Bucharest is the largest urban agglomeration of the country; its num- bers approaching 2 million inhabitants represents more than 85% from the total region’s population. Romanian legend says that the city of Bucharest was founded on the banks of the Dambovita River by a shepherd named Bucur, whose name literally means ”joy”. His flute playing reportedly dazzled the people and his hearty wine from nearby vineyards endeared him to the local traders, who gave his name to the place. Known for its wide, tree-lined boulevards, glorious Belle Époque buildings and a re- putation for the highlife (which in the 1900s earned its nickname of ”Little Paris”), Bucharest is today a bustling metropolis. For this reason film productions began shoo- ting in Bucharest and it did not take long for international producers and filming com- panies to discover and appreciate the rich historical heritage of the city. In fact, more than 200 productions have been filmed, entirely or partially in Bucha- rest and its surrounding areas, most of them in the last ten years. • Mature Masculinity and the Ageing Action Hero
Meijer Rebecca Feasey Mature masculinity and the ageing action hero The ageing male action hero is a figure many are familiar with through the character of Bruce Willis in the Die Hard series. However, physical strength, speeds and agility are usually not associated with old age. Whether age makes a difference in the action hero genre is a question Rebecca Feasey deals with in this article. Introduction Much work within the field of film and gender studies has attempted to theorise, unmask and deconstruct the representation of the male action hero, paying particular attention to the spectacular body and the herculean physical performances of characters such as John McClane/Bruce Willis, Martin Riggs/Mel Gibson and Indiana Jones/Harrison Ford. And yet, at a time when these stars are returning to the action roles that made them famous, in some cases, several decades later, scholars continue to ignore and overlook the fundamental notion of age in their discussions of the hard bodied, hegemonic hero. After all, hegemonic masculinity has associations with physical prowess, sexual virility, social dominance and aggression, which are potentially at odds with the image of the ageing male. With this in mind, I propose to examine the representation of the ageing action hero in the popular and long running Die Hard (1988, 1990, 1995, 2007) franchise, and consider the ways in which the mature masculinity on offer is seen to either be confirming to or challenging the hegemonic ideal. Hegemonic masculinity and male hierarchies Although there are a myriad of masculinities in existence at any one moment, this is not to say that each one is treated equally or granted the same level of social, sexual or economic power.

Studying Film and Television at New York University’s famed Tisch School of the Arts, his first role on television was starring in the NBC series “Passions” as Miguel Lopez-Fitzgerald. During this time, Metcalfe also played the title character in the 20th Century Fox black comedy film John Tucker Must Die. Cultural Studies and the Un/Popular How the Ass-Kicking Work of Steven Seagal May Wrist- Break Our Paradigms of Culture Dietmar Meinel ‘Steven Seagal. Action Film. USA 2008.’ —German TV Guide The first foreigner to run an aikido dojo in Japan, declared the reincarna- tion of a Buddhist lama, blackmailed by the mob, environmental activist, small-town sheriff, owner of a brand of energy drinks, film producer, writer, musician, and lead in his first film (cf. Vern vii), 1980s martial arts action film star Steven Segal is a fascinating but often contradictory figure. Yet, Seagal is strikingly absent from the contemporary revival of seasoned action-film heroes such as Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren, and Chuck Norris in The Expendables (2010), The Expendables 2 (2012), and The Expendables 3 (2014). In contrast, ‘starring’ in up to four direct-to-video releases each year over the last decade, Seagal has become a successful entrepreneur of B movies. The (very) low production values of these films, however, highlight rather than conceal his physical demise as incongruent, confusing, and Godard-style editing replaces the fast-paced martial arts action of earlier movies. While his bulky body has become a disheartening memento of his glorious past, his uncompromising commitment to spiritual enlighten- ment and environmental protection arguably elevates him above the mere ridiculousness of his films. In this essay, I will explore Seagal and his oeuvre as he moved from ac- claimed martial arts action star to bizarre media figure in order to devise a framework for un/popular culture.

ENTERTAINMENT Company Town THE BUSINESS BEHIND THE SHOW « Previous Post | Company Town Home | Next Post » FX's 'Lawman' shoots locally October 27, 2009 | 9:00 am The new FX TV show "Lawman," about a U.S. marshal, is set in Kentucky. But the series, produced by Sony Pictures Television, will begin shooting on Wednesday -- thousands of miles away from the Bluegrass State. The drama, which stars Timothy Olyphant and is based on the short story by Elmore Leonard, will premiere in February (Not to be confused with A&E's "Steven Seagal: Lawman," which premieres in December). The series could easily have been filmed in Pittsburgh, where the pilot episode was shot. Instead, it has made its home in the L.A. suburb of Santa Clarita, thanks to a $4-million state tax credit the series will receive for the first season under California's new film incentive program. "We are extremely grateful that this new program allows us to keep the series here,'' said Ed Lammi, executive vice president of production for Sony Pictures Television. "Lawman" is among 36 film and TV productions set to shoot in-state (mostly in the L.A. area) in the fourth quarter of 2009 as a result of California's new film and TV production incentive. In all, 50 productions have qualified to receive about $100 million in tax credits since the program debuted in July. The state allocated $500 million over a five-year period. The program offers up to a 20% to 25% tax credit for TV series that relocate to California, new TV series produced for basic cable, movies of the week and feature films that cost less than $75 million.
