Last year in this column I was able to tell you that the University had just been named among the three best places to work in the world outside the USA in a poll of international scientists. This year the same poll, carried out by The Scientist magazine, ranked Dundee the best place to work in Europe. This news came shortly after the Sunday Times named the University of Dundee “Scottish University of the Year” in their popular University Guide. Meanwhile the warmth and affection which you, our alumni, hold for the University has been very clearly demonstrated in your spectacular response to the University’s first telephone fundraising appeal. When plans for this campaign were first mooted we had no idea what to expect. I have been, quite genuinely, bowled over by your generosity. Dundee was short-listed with University College London, Durham, Kingston and Manchester for the title of ‘UK University of the Year’, only the second time that a Scottish university has been short-listed for this title. The results also revealed that Dundee alumni have the highest starting salaries of any graduates in Scotland and north of Oxford. Dundee was commended for, amongst other rankings, achieving the top rating in Scotland for teaching excellence, new campus developments and its highly successful access programme. ON THE OCCASION OF GAVIN BROWN’S 65TH BIRTHDAY (University of Sydney, March 5–6, 2007) Biographical note Professor Gavin Brown AO, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sydney, was born on 27 Febru- ary 1942 in Lundin Links, Fife, Scotland. Dux of Madras College, St Andrews, he was awarded a Harkness Scholarship for study at the University of St Andrews, where he graduated with a Master of Arts degree (1st Class Honours and the Duncan Medal) in 1963. Professor Brown was then awarded a Carnegie Scholarship, which enabled him to undertake postgraduate study at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne where he was awarded a PhD in 1966. Pro- fessor Brown also spent a year as a Junior Research Fellow at the University of Edinburgh. Professor Brown commenced his academic career at the University of Liverpool, where he rose to the rank of Senior Lecturer in Mathematics. After accepting the Chair of Pure Mathematics at the University of New South Wales in 1975, Professor Brown and his family emigrated to Australia. At the University of New South Wales, Professor Brown held a number of academic administrative posts, including Head of the Department of Pure Mathematics, Head of the School of Mathematics and, from 1989–1992, Dean of the Faculty of Science. During his time at UNSW, Professor Brown’s mathematical research and, in particular, his work involving Fourier analysis, led to the award of the Sir Edmund Whittaker Memorial Prize and the Australian Mathematical Society Medal.

However, like other NHS Boards across Scotland, NHS Tayside is facing significant challenges including growing demand for all services, workforce challenges that are impacting upon how we deliver services and continuing pressures on our finances. In response to these challenges, NHS Tayside has embarked up on a programme of transformation to ensure that services are safe, affordable and, importantly, sustainable for the future. Transforming Tayside aims to deliver Better Health, Better Care, Better Workplace and Better Value for the population of Tayside. The programme is clinically-led and is being delivered in partnership with our staff and trades unions and our local health and social care partnerships. It is structured to respond to issues and make changes to services in the short to medium-term, as well as presenting an ambitious vision of transformation for Tayside in the longer term. It will provide clear and credible choices for transforming the future of local healthcare. A new, innovative leadership model for clinical directorates is now in place to drive the changes necessary in health and social care across the whole system.
