Opportunities in Blaenau Gwent Discover Housing Opportunities in Blaenau Gwent HOUSING PROSPECTUS October 2018 HOUSING & INNOVATION IS IMPORTANT TO US In Blaenau Gwent we recognise that increasing the volume, choice and quality of housing is integral to our wider social and economic regeneration plans. A strong housing programme not only provides homes but is key to creating connected and sustainable communities. Local facilities including improving Education establishments with, well being and quality at their heart will support the housing offer. Connectivity through improving infrastructure including a new direct rail link to Cardiff Central Station, fast links to the M4 and M5 motorways and recent removal of the Severn Bridge tolls, offer further incentives. We’re a 2 ½ hour drive to London, a 1 ¾ hour drive to Birmingham and a 1 hour drive to Cardiff International Airport. Driving forward our housing aspirations will ensure we have quality homes where people want to live; in turn supporting a strong and skilled local workforce to meet the demands of indigenous business and emerging inward investment opportunities, as well as maximising spend within our local economy. OUR PLANS Our plans are ambitious and challenging but we believe that the time is right to capitalise on the exciting opportunities that lay before us including Cardiff City Deal, METRO and Tech Valleys investment; and exploit the existing assets of the area, not least the proximity to the beautiful natural landscape such as the Brecon Beacons. WORKING TOGETHER We are keen to explore opportunities and work with housing developers, the starting point for which is to promote the range of high quality sites we have available for you to develop. Unmet demand together with a pro development Council and officers available to assist in a project team approach are some of the opportunities we offer. 2 BLAENAU GWENT IS A GOOD PLACE TO LIVE Blaenau Gwent is an area steeped in industrial heritage, surrounded by areas of outstanding natural beauty and home to friendly and passionate communities; it offers a wealth of untapped potential, which alongside a range of emerging opportunities, makes it an ideal time to consider investing. Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council Election Results 1995-2012 Colin Rallings and Michael Thrasher The Elections Centre Plymouth University The information contained in this report has been obtained from a number of sources. Election results from the immediate post-reorganisation period were painstakingly collected by Alan Willis largely, although not exclusively, from local newspaper reports. From the mid- 1980s onwards the results have been obtained from each local authority by the Elections Centre. The data are stored in a database designed by Lawrence Ware and maintained by Brian Cheal and others at Plymouth University. Despite our best efforts some information remains elusive whilst we accept that some errors are likely to remain. Notice of any mistakes should be sent to [email protected]. The results sequence can be kept up to date by purchasing copies of the annual Local Elections Handbook, details of which can be obtained by contacting the email address above. Front cover: the graph shows the distribution of percentage vote shares over the period covered by the results. The lines reflect the colours traditionally used by the three main parties. The grey line is the share obtained by Independent candidates while the purple line groups together the vote shares for all other parties. Rear cover: the top graph shows the percentage share of council seats for the main parties as well as those won by Independents and other parties. The lines take account of any by- election changes (but not those resulting from elected councillors switching party allegiance) as well as the transfers of seats during the main round of local election.

1 Town Tree Cover in Blaenau Gwent County Borough Understanding canopy cover to better plan and manage our urban trees 2 Foreword Introducing a world-first for Wales is a great pleasure, particularly as it relates to greater knowledge about the hugely valuable woodland and tree resource in our towns and cities. We are the first country in the world to have undertaken a country-wide urban canopy cover survey. The resulting evidence base set out in this supplementary county specific study for Blaenau Gwent County Borough will help all of us - from community tree interest groups to urban planners and decision-makers in local Emyr Roberts Diane McCrea authorities and our national government - to understand what we need to do to safeguard this powerful and versatile natural asset. Trees are an essential component of our urban ecosystems, delivering a range of services to help sustain life, promote well-being, and support economic benefits. They make our towns and cities more attractive to live in - encouraging inward investment, improving the energy efficiency of buildings – as well as removing air borne pollutants and connecting people with nature. They can also mitigate the extremes of climate change, helping to reduce storm water run-off and the urban heat island. Natural Resources Wales is committed to working with colleagues in the Welsh Government and in public, third and private sector organisations throughout Wales, to build on this work and promote a strategic approach to managing our existing urban trees, and to planting more where
