EDITORIAL EDITORIAL CARTOON New resolutions As 2008 has come and gone, many have leaped into 2009 with a New Year’s resolution that statistics say will not last.

Each and every year comes and goes, and each and every year signifies new beginnings and second chances. New Year’s is famous for its ball drop in Times Square and champagned kisses on the cheek, but with it also comes the hopes of sticking to resolutions. About 50 percent of Americans make New Year’s resolutions, but only 15 percent manage to keep them, according to http:// www.realscienceofsuccess.com. Many people promise to work out every day orstop smoking, but the majority never stick to it. Workers at the Grand Valley State University Fieldhouse said January sees the highest rate of people working out, but then attendance numbers return to normal in March. Two months is all it takes for people to give up and return to old habits. Making a YOUR INSIGHTS resolution isn’t enough to keep somebody motivated to actually stick with it for the entire year. What is your New Year's resolution? So why do so many people feel compelled to make a New Year’s resolution? What is it about the new year that makes people want to change? New Year’s resolutions began around 4000 B.C. when Babylonians began the new year by paying off old debts and bringing back borrowed goods, according to author and • #1 psychologist Stephen Kraus. About 2,000 years later, the Romans started the new year by assessing the old year and vowing to accomplish more in the coming year. But it’s apparent the majority of today’s society doesn’t accomplish anything in the coming year, and it seems to be more "Drink less pop because "To work out more. 1 "1 do an evening walk "To stop eating so many "To manage my time 1 drink way too much. 1 need to get in shape. with my dog every day, cookies.
