LOUIS ROEDERER, founded in the 18th century, remains family owned, a proud claim becoming increasingly rare in these days of financial wheeling and dealing in the world of Champagne. Combined with extensive holdings providing most of their production needs, the large reserves of wines stored in are very much a feature of their thermostatically controlled cellars, ensuring the ability to offer a remarkably consistent high standard of quality.

POL ROGER, founded in the 1849 and now owns 87 hectares of on prime sites in the Epernay Valley and on the Cotes des Blancs. Great Britain is, and always has been, the premier export market for Champagne Pol Roger: a tradition dating back to the 1860's. This supply is supplemented by grapes purchased on long-term contracts with growers based on the best sites in the region. Total production at Pol Roger is in the region of 1.5 million bottles per annum, making them one of the smaller of the Grandes Marques. The cellars extend some 7 kilometres beneath the streets of Epernay and are carved out of the local chalk over three levels. They are amongst the coolest and deepest in the region, a factor which contributes to the famously fine bubbles in Pol Roger's .

BRUNO PAILLARD, was born in Reims in 1953. His lineage of brokers and growers in the two Grands Crus villages of Bouzy and Verzenay dates back to 1704. After 3 years of working, improving his know how, he finally reaches the style of his dreams. 1994, Bruno Paillard purchases his first vineyards; 3 hectares in Oger, a beautiful Grand Cru of the Cote des Blancs. Now, the vineyards of the house cover 26 hectares.

BARON-FUENTE hail from Charly sur Marne, in the west of Champagne and were founded in the 17th century as the Baron family. Dolores Fuente is the daughter of Spanish immigrants. Gabriel Baron and Dolores Fuente met at the local dance hall. In 1961, at the occasion of his marriage to Dolores, Gabriel Baron was given 1 hectare of vineyards by his father. In 1967, as a symbol of their union, Gabriel Baron and Dolores Fuente founded the house Baron-Fuente. The first bottles were produced and sold directly from the house. Since then, the company kept on developing year after year. In 1982, their daughter Sophie joined Gabriel and Dolores and started working with her parents. In 1992, their son Ignace also joined the still growing family house, which owns by then already 13 hectare of vineyards. Today, Champagne Baron-Fuente is the owner of 38 hectare of vineyards and is still family owned.

THE BRUNIERS' story begins in 188 with ippolyte runier. modest farmer who lived off the land, ippolyte ept less than a hectare of vines to mae his own wines. is small vineyard was at one of the highest points in between hateauneufduPape and Bedarrides, a stony plateau called “La Crau”. The elevation of this terrain had prompted the construction of a communication tower in the late 18th century to transmit telegraph messages between and aris. therwise, the allure of this barren landscape is not immediately discernable—there is nothing but galets roules, or rounded stones, as far as the eye can see. p so high, the vineyards are exposed to all inds of elements—rain, hail, scorching sunshine, and especially the unruly . his was unwelcome terrain where only the toughest vigneron dare plant, although the notorious mistral wors wonderfully to prevent rot. owever difficult to farm, ippolyte saw how the wine from his parcel pleased others, and he began bottling more, gradually increasing his vineyard holdings to sixteen hectares. is sons helped wor the farm, although most of the grapes were being sold off as premium fruit to negociants. he runiers weathered many storms—not the least of which was the ravaging of their vineyards by phylloxera. Hippolyte’s grandson, Henri, eventually oined the family business, and with him came great changes replanting the vineyards, the construction of a new , bringing temperature control into the winery to protect the wines during the fermentations, and most importantly, the launching of the domaine’s first bottlings under the ieux elegraphe label. fter years of closer study, a rau proved to be a privileged vineyard site. t the extreme southeast of the appellation, a large threemeter trench in the vineyard reveals its stratifications, millions of years in the maing. he layers show early alluvial deposits, limestone, silica, and a robust red clay nown as molasse that has come to characterise this terrain. itting on the surface of the soil, the galets hold important functions they insulate the vines from both the cold and the heat, and they provide ideal drainage for the roots. enri retired in 188 and left the domaine in the hands of his two sons, aniel and Frederic.

DOMAINE LA ROQUETE-n eptember 18, ene augier wanted to retire but had no successors to tae over a ouette as it was then nown, his domaine in hateauneufduape. hen aniel and Frederic runier bought the domaine, it was a logical choice. he runier brothers had been proving their worth as rising young stars of the appellation.

DOMAINE LES PALLIERESy 18, the oux brothers wanted to mae a change. ith no future successors to tae their place, they decided to sell. he runier brothers, aniel and Frederic, of the famed ieux elegraphe in hateauneufduape, having distinguished themselves time and time again with world class wines. casual discussion over lunch at Chez Panisse between Daniel and Kermit Lynch, the Brunier’s longtime American importer, spontaneously turned into a game plan to revive the faded ewel—es allieres.

CHATEAU DE LA GARDINE is probably best nown for the shape of its bottles, after the owner aston runel purchased the estate in 1, looed to expand the cellars found an old hand blown bottle, and after finding an talian bottler that could replicate this shape in 15 the bottle was born. oday under a new trading house runel ardine, the company now loos after many appellations in the hone alley including the recent purchase of hateau aint och in irac.

DOMAINE SAINT GAYAN was purchased eighty years before the French evolution by a ieutenant called ierre oubert. t that time, it contained nothing in ablet. everal generations later, the estate owned a uarter of the vines in igondas. he estate has remained in that family since. ndeed, the names oubert, Meffre and oux turn up all the time in this valley. he ablet vines came to the family three generations ago with a marriage to the utran family, another local institution. eanierre has been in charge since 180. e has bought another eight hectares over that time. e sells his ablet red without the village appellation since he has always had a good maret for it as a otes du hone. s well as 70 renache and 0 , it contains 10 arignan, an oftenderided “secondary” variety, which is marvellous when the vines are old. It sees no oak and gets lots of stirring up with delestage and even “cliquage” in which oxygen is blown through the juices. He picks the renache a bit later than average, but lies the yrah fresh.

Great fullness on the palate, with delicious tropical flavours, sustained by freshness. Balanced sweetness leads to fresh grapes on the finish - an instant delight. DERNIERES GRIVES PETIT MANSENG, Domaine Tariquet, Famille Grassa 11.5% 2018 15.40 A sweet, elegant, fine and round wine striking a perfect balance between sweetness and acidity. The fruit and varietal aromas lead to pleasant notes of vanilla. The over-ripe grapes are picked before the thrushes (grives) get to them, giving the wine its rich, powerful yet very fresh qualities. The bouquet reveals scents of white truffle and the impression on the palate is one of great charm, balance and fullness. Its spicy character is well to the fore. Produced in very small quantities. SPAIN CASTA DIVA MOSCATEL, La Bascula (Alicante) 14% 2014 18.38 (50cl) The nose is aromatic and floral with notes of raisins, which follow through to the palate. Expressive aromas of nectarines, apricots, mandarin peel and fresh vanilla. A medley of botrytis fruit flavours, citrus, a touch of butterscotch with a pineapple tang to a long alluring palate. This blend however is a true synergistic combination; the sum of the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. A melange of honey, orange blossom, apricot, lychee and rose water with balanced acidity so the wine doesn’t come across as cloying. Stunning.
