Birds in Northumbria) and Other Occasional Publications Birds in Northumbria 2017 BIRDS IN NORTHUMBRIA 2017 Northumberland and Tyneside Bird Club The Northumberland and Tyneside Bird Club, formerly the Tyneside Bird Club, was formed in 1958. Membership currently stands at 235 and is open to anyone who has a beneficial interest in ornithology. The club aims to provide members with news of local ornithological interest through monthly bulletins, this annual report (Birds in Northumbria) and other occasional publications. All members are encouraged to submit their records to the County Recorder for inclusion in these publications. The club also undertakes to encourage and instruct members in various ornithological activities by means of indoor meetings from September to April, and field outings throughout the year. Although ringing is not an official club activity, some members operate ringing stations at Bamburgh and Hauxley, providing additional information for these publications. Various subscription rates for membership exist, including junior, family and institutional categories. Further details may be obtained from the Honorary Secretary. Website: The club website is a relatively recent and excellent resource. There are numerous interesting sections, which include a photographic gallery, site information, trip reports, a county check list and progress reports on recent rarities. The site can be accessed at www.ntbc.org.uk Sightings page: The club sightings web page gives listings of birds seen locally. Adding a sighting is simple, a short email is all that is required ([email protected]).     Allendale Town to Nenthead Summary The trail begins begins in Allendale from Isaac's Well and follows the River East Allen up the valley. The river is mostly out of view but the path never strays far from it, passing through wooded denes over tributary burns or across hay meadows or where sheep, cattle and horses graze. Behind such pastoral images is a fascinating industrial history when the valley led the world, albeit briefly, in mining technology. By the mid 1800s it was the Silicon Valley of its day with revolutionary hydraulic engines from W.G. Armstong’s Elswick works in Newcastle installed in the shafts to drain Blackett Level mines under construction. So named after the landowners, the Blackett Beaumonts, it was an ambitious engineering project for an underground channel up from Allendale to Allenheads. It was also intended to discover new mineral veins. In the long run, the costly scheme was not a success. The surveying and engineering required may owe something to Allendale’s claim to be the Centre of Britain. After four miles, the trail turns its back on the East Allen beyond Pry Hill and the Rowantree Stob Bastle (defensive farmstead) ruin and turns for a steady climb up on to the moors on the Black Way. Apparent is the paraphernalia of grouse shooting with feeding stations and marker posts, complete with lines of stone and timber reinforced butts. Other than for spells when grouse shooting is underway from 12th August into the autumn, it’s mostly tranquil. People are few and far between with just the cries of lapwings, calls of curlews and tweets from golden plover on the tops for company around the nesting times.

However Henry VI, with his wife, son and a few knights, fled north and found sanctuary in Scotland, where, in exchange for the town of Berwick, the Scots granted them finance, housing and troops.     The Rare Plant Register of South Northumberland (VC67) 2010 Quentin J. Groom and A. John Richards Introduction The Vice-County Rare Plant Registers are an initiative of the Botanical Society of the British Isles to summarise the status of rare and conservation-worthy plants in each vice-county. The intention is to create an up-to-date summary of the sites of rare plants and their status at these sites. Rare Plant Registers intend to identify gaps in our knowledge, aid conservation efforts and encourage monitoring of our rare plants. Criteria for Inclusion The guidelines of the BSBI were followed in the production of this Rare Plant Register. All native vascular plants with a national status of “rare” (found in 1-15 hectads in Britain) or “scarce” (found in 16-100 hectads in Britain) are included even if that species is not native to South Northumberland. In addition, all native species locally rare or scarce in South Northumberland are included, as are extinct native species. These guidelines were occasionally relaxed to include some local specialities and hybrids of note. We would have liked to restrict the list to current sites for each species. However, in many cases, there is too little up-to-date information to make this possible. The listed sites are those where the species might still exist or has existed recently. In most cases, a site is included if a species has been recorded there since 1970. Sites without detailed locality information or of dubious provenance are not included. Where possible, we have tried to show the known history of a site by noting the date of first and last record.
