Dabney, Melina Kristine (BA/MA Film Studies) Re-mixing Old Character Tropes on Screen: Kerry Washington, Viola Davis, and the New Femininity Thesis directed by Professor Melinda Barlow While there is a substantial amount of scholarship on the depiction of African American women in film and television, this thesis exposes the new formations of African American femininity on screen. African American women have consistently resisted, challenged, submitted to, and remixed racial myths and sexual stereotypes existing in American cinema and television programming. Mainstream film and television practices significantly contribute to the reinforcement of old stereotypes in contemporary black women characters. However, based on the efforts of African American producers like Shonda Rhimes, who has attempted to insert more realistic renderings of African American women in her recent television shows, black women’s representation is undergoing yet another shift in contemporary media.

Almost every moment of the life of sports celebrity Bruce Jenner had been detailed, scrutinized and commented on since rumors began to surface that Jen- ner was reportedly considering matching outward appearance to inner self. Then, on Feb. 7, Jenner was involved in a car accident in Malibu, California, and the attention became frenzied. TMZ noted that, despite the incident, Jenner’s reality TV series was still going ahead as planned. TMZ had been reporting on the incident to the point of a pathological obsession—posting photos and videos of the wrecked cars involved while People magazine carried a blow-by-blow account of the accident declaring that Jenner was given a breathalyzer test.

Skorton. Now+Next Few events in my life have been as uplifting and humbling as that of Oct. 19, 2015, the day I was honored to become the 13th Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. The Installation ceremony began with a procession of the institution’s scholars, curators and scientists, representing not only the more than 6,000 staff who dedicate themselves to the Smithsonian’s mission today, but also the many thousands more who have advanced the fields of history, art and science since the institution’s founding in 1846. In 2015 alone we welcomed hundreds of thousands of people to the newly renovated Renwick Gallery (p. 6), our scientists peered to the edge of the black hole at the center of the Milky Way (p. 18) and our anthropologists helped identify the remains of leaders of the Jamestown colony (p. 28). The theme of this year’s annual report is “Now+Next” because the work we do today leads to the innovations of tomorrow. Thanks to the support of many generous private donations, Congress and the American people, we will continue to increase our understanding of the world, and to share that understanding with you.

SUPREME COURT, APPELLATE DIVISION FIRST DEPARTMENT JANUARY 26, 2015 THE COURT ANNOUNCES THE FOLLOWING DECISIONS: Gonzalez, P.J., Renwick, DeGrasse, Manzanet-Daniels, Gische, JJ. 14015N In re Pedro Luis Sosa, Index 300415/13 Petitioner-Respondent, -against- The City of New York, Respondent-Appellant. _________________________ Zachary W. Carter, Corporation Counsel, New York (Dona B. Morris of counsel), for appellant. Pena & Kahn, PLLC, Bronx (Diane Welch Bando of counsel), for respondent. _________________________ Order, Supreme Court, Bronx County (Larry S. Schachner, J.), entered March 19, 2013, which granted petitioner Pedro Luis Sosa’s motion for leave to serve a late notice of claim, unanimously affirmed, without costs. In this action for personal injuries allegedly suffered by petitioner when he was involved in a multi-vehicle accident, although petitioner failed to proffer a reasonable excuse for his delay in timely serving a notice of claim, he has demonstrated that respondent had actual notice of the essential facts constituting his claim (see Thomas v City of New York, 118 AD3d 537 [1st Dept 2014]; Porcaro v City of New York, 20 AD3d 357, 358 [1st Dept 2005]). The accident reports of the police department and the records from its Accident Investigations Squad, which include a witness statement from a Department of Sanitation supervisor, sufficiently connected the accident to the City's negligence in maintaining the road. The reports, which show that the incident was caused by an icy condition on the roadway, sufficiently apprised the City of petitioner’s negligence claim against it (see Matter of Strauss v New York City Tr. Auth., 195 AD2d 322, 322-323 [1st Dept 1993]; Matter of Gerzel v City of New York, 117 AD2d 549, 551 [2d Dept 1986]; Matter of Annis v New York City Tr.

New Orleans coroner Dr. Frank Min- yard, who declined to categorize Henry Glover’s killing as murder, and who resisted A. C. Thompson’s efforts to investigate violence by police and white vigilantes after Katrina, called D- Mort “the Taj Mahal of forensic science. It is a beautiful place.” D-M ort in Carville closed in February 2006, ten weeks after opening, having examined approximately 900 bodies. Built to process 150 bodies per day, D- Mort had received only a single body per day by February 2006. feMa had overestimated the casualties of Katrina. The facility, built on private land owned by Bear Industries, a construc- tion supply company, was decommissioned and abandoned (Dewan, 2006). In Season 1, Episode 7 of Treme, “Smoke My Peace Pipe,” David Simon and Eric Overmyer set a scene at D-M ort, Minyard’s “beautiful place,” to reveal the injustices involved in the treatment of prisoners and in the han- dling and disposition of the bodies of the people who died in the flood. At the start of Season 1, LaDonna Batiste (Khandi Alexander) enlists the help of Toni Bernette (Melisso Leo) in locating her missing brother, Daymo. They discover that he had been arrested on Sunday, August 28, the day be- fore Katrina made landfall, after a traffic violation.
