Soulbury Parish Breakfast

Soulbury Breakfast on 24th March was the best yet. Possibly the splendid weather had something to do with it, but 131 breakfasts were served. That is no mean feat considering that seating is only available for about 50 at a time. What a splendid job the volunteers do, from the cooking and serving and not forgetting the washing up. £550 was added to the friends of the Church funds. If you missed it you missed a real treat, the next one will be on 12th May after which there will be a summer break until September. Church News - Philip’s Message

Dear friends, Last month we looked at the discipline of Lent leading towards the celebration of Easter. There's lots of talk these days about journeying, not meaning necessarily getting on a bike or in a car, bus or plane but somehow travelling ‘internally'. We all do this, either consciously or unconsciously: it's an emotional or spiritual journey, a movement of heart, mind or spirit. We can, and do, engage in this whether we are overtly 'religious' or not and even whether we actually choose to or not. It's just part of being human. I believe it's because, in the words of St. Augustine of Hippo (in modern day Algeria), there is a God-shaped hole in us which only He can fill. Sometimes we might try to substitute something else instead but it's doomed to failure - a bit like putting in diesel instead of unleaded as instructed! A few year's ago I had a clergy colleague who wanted to give one of his churches a 'wow' or 'gasp' moment on Easter morning to try and help them grasp the feelings some of the early disciples felt when they saw that Jesus was risen from the tomb. When it came time for the sermon he uncovered a bowl of water on a small table by his side and proceeded to shave his beard off in front of them! They were suitably amazed. He grew it back straight after - the revealing of his bare face was too much, for him! Whatever journeying you do this Easter, whether literal or figurative, I pray you are blessed in it and through it. Revd. Philip

The meeting of Soulbury Parish Council took place on Monday 18 March 2019. There were 3 members of the public present. Apologies received from Cllrs Maurice Cross, Wendy Taylor, Janet Blake and Ian Culley. Minutes of Parish Council meeting on Monday 18 February 2019 were approved. There were no matters arising. Various accounts were paid. Planning: 2019/0818: Land adjacent to Oaklands, Road, Soulbury - 3 dwellings. Objections still stand as for last application for 5 dwellings, ie access is dangerous and environmental issues as land is next to farm. 2019/00662: 5 Rock Lane Farm, Liscombe Park - retention of existing outbuilding (used as an office and TV room). No objections. 2018/03772: The Stables, Ivy Lane, Great Brickhill - erection of one dwelling. No real objection as long as footprint of development remains within limitations set for businesses. 2018/03886: Hill View Farm, Dean Farm Lane, Soulbury - relates to landscaping. No objections. 2016/014545: Pump House development at the three locks. Application made for internal works for use of building as an office/cafe/business. No changes to externals. No objection. Children’s play area: Quote for supply of new gates was approved. This is to increase security and maintain access for mowing. Grass cutting: nothing to raise. AVDC/BCC: Cllr Blake advised that the VALP is in a state of limbo just now, awaiting approval from the inspector. Parish hall: Gas certifi cate obtained. Soulbury Millennium Green: Dog fouling seems, for the moment, to have lessened probably in part due to the threat of acquiring CCTV. Mower needs to be serviced. Frogs can be found in the ponds again. AOB: There have been reports of heating oil being stolen - take note! The kissing gate between the Church and cricket fi eld needs replacing. On 16 April there will be a demonstration on the use of defi bs in the Parish Hall at 7pm.

Following the recent death of Pam Norman, the Parish Council agreed to send a £100 donation to Helen House Hospice in recognition of Pam’s long association with the village. She helped in many aspects of village life including being founding editor of Soulbury Parish News. She will be sadly missed, and we pass our condolences to her daughter, Jane, and her family. Date of the next meeting: 15 April 2019. Soulbury Village Cricket Club

Womens’ Institute

In the absence of our President, Gay Henrick, the March meeting was chaired by Jean Housley, our Vice President. After the singing of Jerusalem, the minutes of the previous meeting were read and signed and matters arising dealt with. Another afternoon tea is being planned for June which we are all looking forward to. The members who attended the Invention and Discovery Day held in , once again came away with a wealth of information on a variety of topics. These ranged from a material engineer, studying amongst other things, new ways of keeping homes warm in winter, and cool in summer, and also a psychologist discussed how one event can have a wide-ranging effect on a whole range of others. Also discussed was the merits of skin care products, and a tomato grower revealed the intricacies of commercial growing, and advised on the storage of tomatoes (not in the fridge as that causes them to lose flavour). On completion of the business it was then time to introduce our speaker for the evening. Ian Haynes is a volunteer with the Parks Trust in Milton Keynes which is a charity that looks after parks, woods and lakes in the area. Milton Keynes have a wealth of all these features, and looking after them is a full time task. The charity is funded partly by commercial properties in various areas. They employ 74 staff who are assisted by about 200 volunteers who keep all areas safe and accessible to the general public. Among other tasks, lakes need dredging, paths need to be cleared and woods kept tidy. There is a large range of activities and events arranged throughout the year and Milton Keynes has plenty of parkland in which to hold them. Ian was thanked for his most interesting talk by Mary Burnett after which refreshments were served.

Our next meeting is on Tuesday 9th April when the speaker will be Alice Horn who will take us on "The Golden Road to Samarkand.

The Social Group welcomed back two of it’s members from the other side of the world, this month. Unfortunately one of them was such a recent arrival that he was still recovering from his journey and did not join us on the 14th. Pat Jones, however, did join us for the afternoon and held us all spellbound as she told of her son’s exploits in New Zealand. It is fascinating to listen to others experiences from their travels and no doubt we shall be hearing more from Gillie and Wendy, who have both been to different parts of the world since we last met. Why not consider coming along to join us one Wednesday afternoon. Details are in the “News.”

Millennium Green News

The Millennium Green is getting ready for spring, bulbs are coming up, the reeds and rushes around the pond areas are beginning to sprout, the whole place is coming to life. Grass will need cutting on a regular basis soon, so if you feel like a little exercise during the coming months, do not be afraid to come over to the green and lend a hand. You will not be disappointed. By the way, did I mention that we now have resident frogs in one of the ponds, come and see if you can spot them. Don’t forget our Easter Egg Hunt on Easter Saturday starting at 2pm 100 Club

The collection of £4 was given for the work of the Christian Literature Society. Prepared by the Christian Women of Latin America, the theme was “Education through Living”. The Day of Prayer begins at the International Date Line in the Pacific, and the first observances are in Tonga, Fiji and New Zealand. After some forty hours the “day” ends as the sun sets over St. Lawrence Island off the coast of Alaska. The movement began in a small way in 1887. In the past forty years the number of participating countries has increased from 50 to 170. It is hoped that a service will be held in the Methodist Church next year on the first Friday in March, the day set apart for the Women’s World Day of Prayer. ******************** We are pleased to hear that Mrs. Kellner and Mrs. Winsor are now out of hospital and convalescing; we hope that Mrs. Maher will soon be well enough to leave hospital.
