The recent spate of anti-religion books by Dawkins, Hitchens et al. Humphrys tells of attending a Billy Graham meeting with a friend. The car broke down on the way. The Mensa study showing an inverse relationship between intelligence and belief, and the fact that few members of the Royal Society believe in a personal god, are more significant than Humphrys maintains. A year later after failing to find any evidence of God, I concluded I was an atheist; after that I only had criticisms for religion and God. Atheists are stupid. But I had a need to tell them and it aggravated my dread. I endured these feelings for five years but finally I confessed my secret. This revelation is largely thanks to my wife, a Christian, and her family. My mother-in-law despite being a practicing Christian, welcomed me as an atheist into the family and my wife gave me insight I would have otherwise ignored. Religion is not a bad construct like I thought it was. Religious people are not dissimilar to an average person: some are good and some bad, and some work for the benefit of others while some for themselves. Religion is no exception to human rule. The nature of faith and the concept of God make evidence pertaining to Him unattainable. So the evidence can never meet the threshold. There is an argument separate to the two above that became my reason for being an agnostic. It deals with the evidence people cite for or against the existence of God.

In transform EVP, noise from which voice is formed is essentially the same kind of random energy, but it is expressed in the plasma or a transistor junction via stochastic resonance. GHost Hostings 17 looks at how ghosts of the body or mind may become a vessel for ghost-making. Embodying Spirit Through Music (and dance) in Afrocuban Religions Christian Weaver In Cuban religious practices nothing happens without the permission of the dead. Native American spirit guides, African ancestor spirits, European Saints and familial ancestors stand at the threshold of all rituals hosted in houses throughout Cuba as if waiting to be invited in. Their blessings and warnings should be heeded. Due to the frequency and DIY nature of these events many Cubans develop an intimate relationship with an array of ‘ghost’ figures in their everyday lives. In his presentation, Christian Weaver will look at the pivotal role of music and dance in realising these relationships, as well as the fundamental idea of ‘belief in spirits’ contained within them. Christian Weaver is a musician, researcher, and ethnomusicologist. As an initiated drummer he regularly participates in the ceremonies and rituals of a number of the modern Afro- Cuban religious practices. His research focuses on the flow of influences between the music and dance of these practices and social and secular forms of performance in Cuba.

In the corner, a ziggurat of poetry books flutters Thinking pages. What to read? And what to make of it all? Galloping to the rescue comes a four-legged friend called This Thing Called Literature. The double act they refer to themselves as Bennett and Royle throughout the book Thinking a breezy guide for students to reading, thinking and writing. This is not the journal to explore their many suggestive and useful ideas about literary works, great and small. However, their brief text does provide a glimpse, to the curious, of what kind of thinking goes on in literary academic circles. A similar kind of morbid excitement, just ten pages later, leads to a bizarre muddle about dead authors in general. Hence the spookiness of calculus, then, Leibniz being long gone, or the ghostly aura around J. Oblivious to the countless empirical and philosophical critiques of psychoanalysis, Bennett and Royle certainly seem to be haunted by Freud. At the end of the chapter on creative writing is a reading list of eight books, five of which are about Freud. In the Glossary, the longest text is devoted to digging up, yet again, the aforementioned death drive. Perish the thought. But this is an educational handbook, whose Glossary confuses the concept of the double bind with self-contradictory statements and reckons that Thinking a poem moves you, this makes it performative.

Opinion polls show that the majority of the general public accepts that paranormal phenomena do occur. Such widespread experience of and belief in the paranormal can only mean one of two things. Either the paranormal is real, in which case this should be accepted by the wider scientific community which currently rejects such claims; or else belief in and experience of ostensibly paranormal phenomena can be fully explained in terms of psychological factors. This presentation will provide an introduction to the sub-discipline of anomalistic psychology, which may be defined as the study of extraordinary phenomena of behaviour and experience, in an attempt to provide non-paranormal explanations in terms of known psychological and physical factors. This approach will be illustrated with examples relating to a range of ostensibly paranormal phenomena. Blog: Professor Chris French is the Head of the Anomalistic Psychology Research Unit in the Psychology Department at Goldsmiths, University of London. He is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society and of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry, as well as being a Distinguished Supporter of the British Humanist Association and a member of the Scientific and Professional Advisory Board of the British False Memory Society.
