Dear Mayors/Municipal Clerks

April 2nd, 2013 marked a historical day in Canada for the Autism community, for the first time recognized World Autism Awareness Day.

On behalf of Autism Ontario and our sponsor BMO, we would like to thank you for taking part in the Raise the Flag Initiative and acknowledging April 2nd as World Autism Awareness Day. We appreciate you having the flag provided raised in recognition of all those in your community who have a family member or friend diagnosed with ASD. There were over 500 flags raised across the province creating awareness!

We had over 70% of the municipalities take part; truly a great success for our first year. Flags were raised on flag poles, put in local community centres, attached to walls and desks in communities across the province. We also had community service providers, emergency services, schools and several restaurants (including McDonalds) eager to take part. We heard stories of families and their children with ASD standing alongside local leaders and supporters about the joys and challenges of lives lived with ASD in Ontario.

For those who were not able to take part we hope that you will consider joining us next year. Although some of you were not able to take part this year we were thrilled to hear that some may even consider changing their by-laws regarding flag raising due to our request to help create autism awareness in their community for next year.

We ask that you please keep the flag provided to rise every year; Autism Ontario will be making the Raise the Flag Initiative an annual campaign for World Autism Awareness Day.

As with any new project, along the way you find things that you would like to do differently in the future. We would appreciate your suggestions on how we could do things differently to better suit the needs of your municipality. We have coordinated a brief survey that we would appreciate you completing for us: https:Uwww.surveymonkey.com/s/municipalitieswaad Our goal for World Autism Awareness Day 2014 is to expand the campaign to include schools from all three school boards, emergency services, and other new supporters across the province.

Thanks again for your involvement in our first annual Raise the Flag Initiative and look forward to your participation annually to help create awareness in your community.

Regards,

Leah Miltchin Margaret Spoelstra Katherina Symes Autism Ontario President Executive Director Community Resources Manager

Dear Matthew,

May is Community Living Month across the province of Ontario!

To help build and maintain awareness we are visiting the local Council groups in our area to present a brief information session on Community Living South Muskoka, the individuals we serve and the programs we offer. Our Board Chair, Gord Haugh, would like to give a 5-10 minute verbal presentation about our agency to the Town of Bracebridge Council members at their meeting on May 29th. In addition, there will be one of the individuals we support present with home-baked treats for Council members. Please let me know if this will be possible.

For your reference, we will also be giving presentations to Councils at the Township of Georgian Bay, the Town of Graven hurst, the Township of Muskoka Lakes and the District ofMuskoka.
