You can feel so small standing by the seashore. The vastness of all that is before you expands much farther than your eye can see. What is happening on the other side? As tides continue to ebb and flow, what occurs as they come and go remains largely a mystery and the effects of their presence unknown in your sight. Yet, things are moving and changing as you gaze upon the water, as the thumbprint of their presence is left behind. The greater the wind and wave, the greater the effect. But even a gentle breeze leaves its humble mark upon the seashore on which you stand. The smallest pebble still makes a ripple in the great blue expanse of ocean waters. It doesn’t need to be big.

You never know the full impact of your smallest gesture or simplest of words. A yes or no, agree or disagree, here or there, this or that can influence time and history in ways you may never know. The Holy Spirit is like that: fierce and torrential, and then almost still and silent, creating and recreating nonetheless. Coming as a gentle breeze or a gusty wind, God’s Holy Spirit continues to move over, around, and into the waters of our lives. The Spirit brings fruit and unknown possibilities to what we humbly bring with us and that same Spirit eventually brings all to fulfillment in Christ.

The first disciples didn’t have much. They possessed simple faith and a willingness to go into unchartered territory with a love of their friend-God, humble offerings, and a knowledge that they were not alone. This allowed them to do amazing things with very little. Do you believe that you are being led and that you have a purposeful life? We often do not realize our value because we do not think that the little we have is good enough. How wrong we are! A little flour mixed with water and embraced by a prayer of blessing transforms simple offerings into the magnificent Eucharistic presence of God. If the Holy Spirit can do such amazing things with these humble gifts of the earth, even more can happen with you. Don’t underestimate the value of the smile you gave a stranger, the door held open for an elderly widow, the listening ear offered to one who was lonely, the tolerance given to the wounded soul who is angry, and the loving shoulder you offered as a cradle under the head of someone in pain. Modest gifts offered with love can be transformed by the Spirit into wondrous blessings you may never know. It’s Pentecost. Trust. You are not alone.

My dear Parishioners,

These past 10 weeks have been a very difficult time for all of us. We cannot ignore the fact that so many people around us are suffering as a consequence of the coronavirus pandemic. But we must never forget that the Risen Christ is alive and present to us, even in the darkest hour of our lives. For that reason, it is important to demonstrate that our Church continues to be alive and active in the midst of the stay-at- home mandate. This weekend is the celebration of the Solemnity of Pentecost and it should remind us of our identity as missionary disciples. It is “the Birthday of the Church!” a day to celebrate the mission Jesus has left us, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, to let every person know of the love of God. And we have experienced this love in many varied ways during this Covid-19 pandemic just within family situations where patience, kindness, compassion, understanding, care, consideration and trust have become part of the day to day encounter. Some of you feel that it would be an excellent gesture to open up the Church to celebrate this very important Festivity, the Pentecost. But the fact of the matter is that most of the churches in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles if not all, are not equipped yet with the necessary health protocols to open safely. It is worth restating the message of Gomez that he sent to all parishes last Saturday, May 23 reminding all of us once again about the expectations before opening the doors of the Churches to make sure they are safe to use. The following is part of his message. Archbishop Gomez reminded us that though the Church buildings are closed but our parishes are open. We have the celebration of Mass for all of you through the internet in many parishes of the Archdiocese and we are trying to be present to all of you sacramentally in that virtual world in which we are able to celebrate Mass. We hope that that reality is going to change soon. The Archbishop also thought, it is clear to all of us that it might be possible in the coming future to be able to open physically the churches and receive parishioners to come. It’s not going to be the same in the beginning because there is the reality of the social distancing and also making sure that the churches are sanitized, and people are protected when they come to church. And that safety measure, he insisted is the most important thing — that we protect one another. We know that God is with us but at the same time we have to be careful and make sure that we protect each other in this challenging time. “So, let us keep praying together. Let us keep working together. Let us hope that things are going to change really soon. Obviously, we need to come to that moment where we can safely open our churches to continue the celebration of the Sacraments that are so essential for us,” concluded the Archbishop.

VATICAN EASES CONCERNS OF FAITHFUL Here is information about a special Plenary granted during the pandemic from St. Paul VI’s Pastoral Letter “Indulgentiarum Doctrina, 10”. The Church has communicated a pastoral response to Catholics affected by the coronavirus – especially those concerned about their “state of grace” at the time of death because the sacraments of the , , and the Anointing of the Sick are curtailed during the pandemic. There appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. ~Acts 2:3

LIVE THE LITURGY - With Pentecost, the disciples significantly changed. They were charged up and ready to go. They received the Holy Spirit and no longer harbored fear and apprehension. They knew who they were and what needed to be done. With the peace of the Lord and the power of the Spirit within them, they set out to do amazing things with simple means. We have received the Holy Spirit as well. What keeps us from truly understanding the mission of Christ and continuing the advancement of the Gospel? Some may think this was a work of the past and not relevant now. Others may believe that the work set before me is simply about doing what I need to do to merit heaven and has little to do with my brothers and sisters. Take a good look at the world. More are in need of hearing the Good News than there ever were. We have the power to get up and out and start doing life changing things!

The Vatican decree issued on March 20 says that people near death from the virus and unable to receive the sacraments due to isolation measures can obtain a special plenary indulgence as long “as they have recited some prayers during their life.” Such an extraordinary measure in these extreme circumstances is intended to give peace of mind to the dying and their loved ones. It essentially means that when an individual Catholic cannot fulfill conditions during this pandemic, the Church compassionately does so on their behalf. The Church also grants this indulgence to people affected by the virus, to health-care workers and their families, and anyone who prays for the end to the pandemic. The necessary conditions for receiving this plenary indulgence are to show contrition for sins, devoutly watch a celebration of the Mass, recite the , pray the , or practice some other devotion. , which are granted through the mercy of God and the authority of the Church, remove all (if plenary) or part (if partial) of a person’s temporal punishment for sin. “To acquire them, it is required on the one hand that prescribed works be performed, and on the other that the faithful have the necessary dispositions, that is to say, that they love God, detest sin, place their trust in the merits of Christ and believe firmly in the great assistance they derive from the Communion of Saints.” Please continue to pray for all Bishops and priests, especially Fr. Louis and me so that we remain true and faithful to our vocations in serving God and His people in love. I also pray for all of you that God’s abiding love may sustain you even more this time.

Peace, Fr. Riz

Note: Please remember to support St. Peter Claver Church with your weekly and consider using our On-Line giving portal that you can find here in our parish website. Also, I encourage you to take part in Census 2020 because your participation will make a difference in the economic health of our State and in particular our city of Simi Valley.

The Food Share truck will deliver various fresh produce on the 4th Thursday of the month at 10am, and will park near the garages behind the Youth Center. Since items are not pre-packaged, everyone is required to wear a mask and gloves, and bring their own bag. Safe distancing will take place and be monitored.

“Food Share Fridays” will continue as before here at St. Peter Claver - every Friday from 9-10am; masks and gloves are required.

We are also in need of a few more volunteers to assist with food share at this time. If you are able to help, please call the parish office at 526-6499. Page Eight St. Peter Claver

Dear brother and sisters,

As we all are going through these challenging times, I just wanted to spend some time with you sharing what is the current situation regarding the celebration of Sacraments in our parishes. It’s been very challenging for me, personally, and for my brother bishops and priests not to be able to have the celebration of Mass in a normal way.

And also it’s been very challenging to have to postpone the celebration of celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation during this time. And not be able to be present for the entire Church in the celebration of Sacraments like Baptism and Confession, especially the celebration of funerals where we have the sadness and passing of one of our loved ones.

And I know that this has also been extremely difficult for all of you. We all want to be together, I shared with you several times how difficult it is for me to celebrate Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels just by myself and two or three people that are with me. When it is a beautiful Cathedral and what makes the Cathedral even more beautiful is the presence of so many faithful that want to come and celebrate with us — Holy Mass and the other liturgical celebrations that we have here.

But, I think we all have to understand that the reason that we have to do that is because we care for one another. The reality of this coronavirus pandemic is that it is a very dangerous illness and the virus is easy to be passed to one another. We didn’t know exactly what was the reality and we started seeing the consequences of so many people dying and so many people getting sick, so that’s why we had to be extremely careful in taking care of one another.

The situation is not over yet. As we can see, even this week the number of cases of people infected in Los Angeles County, and sadly the people who have died this week — the numbers are still very high.

In the other two counties of the Archdiocese, Ventura and Santa Barbara, the numbers are not as big as the ones in Los Angeles County. But it is still a very contagious illness.

That’s why my brother bishops and myself together with a counsel of priests, we decided to follow the indications of the city and county health in Los Angeles and in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, with the reality of having to close the churches.

But, as we are saying every day, the building are closed but our parishes are open. We had the celebration of Mass for all of you through the internet in many parishes of the Archdiocese and we are trying to be present to all of you sacramentally in that virtual world in which we are able to celebrate Mass.

We hope that that reality is going to change soon.

I think it’s clear to all of us that it might be possible in the coming future to be able to open physically the churches and receive parishioners to come. It’s not going to be the same in the beginning because there is the reality of the social distance and also making sure that the churches are sanitized and people are protected when they come to church.

And I insist that that’s the most important thing — that we protect one another. We know that God is with us but at the same time we have to be careful and make sure that we protect each other in this challenging time. Page Nine St. Peter Claver

So, at the same time, I’ve been working really hard with the city officials, the county officials, and the state officials to help them to understand what is the importance of the presence of God in our lives and how beautiful it is for us to come to church. And especially for us Catholics to have the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist.

This makes a huge difference. I think the officials are, little by little, understanding better what is that urgent reality. And I also tried to explain to them that we have the protocols and everything that is necessary to make sure that there is protection for anyone coming to church — the in these three counties in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

So, let us keep praying. Let us keep working together. I’m really hopeful that things are going to change really soon. I need your support and your prayers because, obviously, we need to come to that moment where we can safely open our churches to continue the celebration of the Sacraments that are so essential for us.

We have talked many times how important it is — daily Mass. How important it is — Sunday Mass. How beautiful it is to be able to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation, where we receive the forgiveness of our sins and new grace to continue our Christian life in the middle of the world.

So, as I said, I am totally committed to keep working together with my auxiliary bishops and the counsel of priests of the Archdiocese and all the priests and all of you — that if we work together, we pray together, and we give priority to protecting one another in this challenging situation, we can see that the churches are going to be open very soon.

So let’s keep praying for that. You are in my prayers in a special way and I ask your prayers for my ministry here in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. And let you allow me to give you a special blessing today:

May Almighty God bless each one of you, your families, during this challenging time and especially as we, this Sunday, celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit.

May Mary our Blessed Mother intercede for all of those in this special moment.
