Creepy things did happen, but all the way through the book I felt disconnected with everything that happened, it definitely wasn't John Saul or Stephen King bone chilling, not all. I will say 1. The only thing I'd warn parents about is that there's a lot of violence in the book, with one character dying graphically in the course of the book. But there was something missing. Soon birds start falling from the sky, water begins mysteriously drying up, strange radio problems start popping up, strange lights amid people disappearing, and most of all people and animals start acting more viciously all of a sudden. • The House of Silk by Anthony Horowitz It Is 1890
The House of Silk by Anthony Horowitz It is 1890. A year after Sherlock Holmes's death, Watson – now in a retirement home – narrates a tale of Sherlockian detection that could tear apart the very fabric of society. The story opens with a train robbery in Boston, and moves to the innocuous setting of Wimbledon. Why you'll like it: Historical mystery, intricately plotted, fast-paced, suspenseful. About the Author: Author and television scriptwriter Anthony Horowitz was born in Stanmore, England on April 5, 1956. He writes mostly children's books, including the Alex Rider series, The Power of Five series, and the Diamond Brothers series. He also writes novels for adults including The Killing Joke and The Magpie Murders. He has created Foyle's War and Midsomer Murders for television as well as written episodes for Poirot and Murder Most Horrid. (Bowker Author Biography) Questions for Discussion 1. Do you think that you need to have read the original Sherlock Holmes novels to enjoy The House of Silk? Do you feel that the new author set the tone of the book correctly? Did Horowitz bring a new dimension to the characters? 2. Holmes's way of looking at people, making a grand statement and then explaining it based on his observations, is meant to convey to you the idea that he sees things that you, the reader, cannot see and from these observations he makes calculated guesses based on his knowledge, which you do not share. Does that still work now, that we have televised sleuthing and we are used to seeing the evidence that the detective sees? 3.

FUNERAL VOICES When the doorbell rings at three in the morning, it’s never good news. Alex Rider was woken by the first chime. His eyes flickered open but for a moment he stayed completely still in his bed, lying on his back with his head resting on the pillow. He heard a bed- room door open and a creak of wood as somebody went downstairs. The bell rang a second time and he looked at the alarm clock glowing beside him. 3.02 a.m. There was a rattle as someone slid the security chain off the front door. He rolled out of bed and walked over to the open window, his bare feet pressing down the carpet pile. The moonlight spilled on to his chest and shoulders. Alex was fourteen, already well- built, with the body of an athlete. His hair, cut 9 short apart from two thick strands hanging over his forehead, was fair. His eyes were brown and serious. For a moment he stood silently, half- hidden in the shadow, looking out. There was a police car parked outside. From his second-floor window Alex could see the black ID number on the roof and the caps of the two men who were stand- ing in front of the door. The porch light went on and, at the same time, the door opened. “Mrs Rider?” “No. I’m the housekeeper. What is it? What’s happened?” “This is the home of Mr Ian Rider?” “Yes.” “I wonder if we could come in…” And Alex already knew.
