The Joyous Month of December

e are in the season of Advent, the season which lasts for four Sundays leading up to Christmas, and then Wonto the twelve-day celebration of Christmastide, which lasts from Christmas Eve until Epiphany on January 6.Advent means “the coming of Christ.” Therefore, forus, the four weeks of Advent are an opportunity to recognize the significance ofJesus’ birth and to prepare our hearts and minds for His arrival. The four Sundays of Advent each have a specific theme or focus. The purpose of each theme is to spend time reflecting on the true meaning of the season - the life of Jesus. The Bible clearly teaches us of TWO COMINGS of Christ. The FIRST COMING is history; it has already happened. The SECOND COMING is future; it has yet to happen. The first two Sundays in Advent look towards Christ’s second coming, and the last two Sundays (December 17th – 24th) look towardsus remembering remember Christ’s first coming and preparing us for Christmas. Christmas is indeed the most wonderful time of the year because it’s a Joyous season for celebrating the birth of our Lord.Generally celebrating Christmas means first attending Mass, especially Midnight Mass in a packed church, beautiful music, and joyous carol singing. This is followed by greeting our families, friends andrelatives, and later sharinga Christmasfeast – a lunch or dinner, exchanging gifts and adapt to new ways to celebrate Christmas. And it will more. But, following a turbulent 2020, Christmas this year continue to be as heart-warming and joyful as ever. is going to feel a little different to what we have previously Thereisone aspect of Christmas that no one can take known. away from us-the joy of the birth of our Saviour! December 2020 9 Theology & Christian Life - 13

Poulose Mangai, SJ Clothe Yourself With Christ!

ith baptism we began our Christian life. Christian life is Wlife in union with Christ. Jesus Christ is the source of our Christian life. The quality of our Christian life increases as our relationship with Christ grows. It is important that we grow and mature in our Christian life by cultivating and deepening our relationship with Christ which we began in baptism.

St. Paul exhorts us: “As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving” (Colossians 2:6-7). This exhortation contains four elements; i) continue to be rooted in Christ; ii) continue to be built on Christ who is the foundation; iii) continue to be firmly established in the faith taught by the apostles, without deviating from it; and iv) continue to be us. He has a long list of evils that we must put to death thankful to God for Christ who died and rose for us and for the in us: fornication, impurity, passion, evil desire, greed, Christian faith and life in union with Christ given to us. anger, wrath, malice, slander, abusive language, and lies (Colossians 3:5-7). Some of these evils may not be Baptism was the inauguration of our Christian life. it is then there in us; there may be some evils in us, which are that we received Christ and chose to live united to Christ. That not listed by St. Paul here. We must identify and walk is not enough. We must make progress in our life of union away from the real evils in us now, which are against with Christ. We must live lives appropriate for the disciples our baptismal consecration to holiness. of Christ. To live in Christ means to recognise the Lordship of Christ over us. It means to live in fidelity to Christ. If we In the Letter to the Galatians, St. Paul reminds us that recognise the Lordship of Christ and love him above everything we have clothed ourselves with Christ in baptism: “So else, then we will show it by the generosity of our love for him in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through and our commitment to living the Christian faith. This life is faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have certainly very demanding. But God in his grace has given us all clothed yourselves with Christ” (Galatians 3:26-27). the necessary resources for it, including the gift of the Spirit. In our new life in Christ, we must make every effort to cultivate virtues and good practices contrary to St. Paul further clarifies our Christian responsibility: “So if you the vices and evils in us. Here also St. Paul has a list: have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, patience, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God” (Colossians bearing with one another, forgiveness, love, peace and 3:1). We know that our baptism signified our dying with Christ thankfulness (Colossians 3:12-15). and rising with Christ. It means that we have chosen to bid goodbye to our sinful ways and to live the new life the risen It is necessary that we remove all evils from us, clothe Christ has given us. We will no more follow the wisdom of the ourselves with virtues and live godly lives because we world but follow the wisdom from above, wisdom from God. are “God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved” (Colossians Christ rules over us from heaven where he is seated at God’s 3:12). We notice that the virtues and good qualities right hand. We must allow the Spirit of Christ to guide and listed above are the virtues and qualities of Jesus. direct our lives towards heaven, towards God. We should not When we adorn ourselves with these Christic virtues allow the worldly temptations and evil desires to take us away and qualities, we actually put clothe ourselves with from our journey towards heaven where Christ rules with God Christ. We are increasingly conformed to Christ. We for ever. We must set our mind on things that are above, not will thus continue to live in Christ and like Christ. To things that are on earth (Colossians 3:2). live Christian life means this: to live like Christ in this world. We thus become living Christs in the world. St. Paul invites us Christians to get rid of our old clothes and Christmas 2020 and New Year 2021 calls us to a more put on new clothing consistent with our immersion into Christ authentic Christian life rooted in Christ, built on Christ at baptism. He invites us to put to death whatever is earthly in and clothed with Christ.

Mukesh. It was beautifully animated by the Parish Women’s Council enthusiastically with lot of planning and coordination. Lots of women of the parish also came forward and actively participated to make the day much more special. It was indeed a great teamwork.

The Grotto and the entrance were beautifully decorated with rangoli and candles. Lots of candles were illuminated to signify the joy and hope within our hearts.

It started with the candle light rosary and after each decade hymn in five different regional languages were sung by the women volunteers. After the mass “Prasad” was distributed.

As an initiative from women’s council, the mask was also sold at the subsidised rate and all the masks were sold off on the same day.

It was indeed an eventful day filled with enthusiasm and joy!

On October 25th, 2020 the women from our ministry also attended the prayer meet organised by Women Commission, Delhi Diocese. The commission put forth an initiative of poster/slogan/poem writing as an awareness program to mark the “International Day for elimination of violence against women” (Nov 25th). As discussed in the meeting, the women council of the Holy Spirit Church took steps to create awareness among the parishioners.

We were really amazed to see the great response as we received lot of entries. We extend our appreciations to all especially to catechism teachers, students, youth who supported for the awareness program by their creativity.

In these days of pandemic, let’s stay active as missionaries of living God.

midst the Pandemic crisis preventing elders and children to pray at churches, the solemn celebration of Annual Feast of Our Lady of Graces, patroness of Vikaspuri Parish was A th held on Sunday, 25 October 2020. Prior to the feast, novena to Our Lady commenced with flag hoisting by Rev. Fr. Aires Furtado, Parish Priest of St. John’s Church, Palam on 16th October 2020 followed by Holy Eucharist concelebrated by Fr. Aires, Fr. Deepak Soreng and Fr. D. Britto. In his homily, Fr. Aires Furtado brought out and exhorted how Mother Mary is full of Grace and urged to pray rosary, a weapon for peace. Keeping in mind the guidelines promulgated by the Government elaborate arrangements of sanitising the church, thermal scanning and sanitization of the faithful were made mandatory before entering into the church premises. The nine days of Novena were led by priests of the Archdiocese of Delhi. Exemplary sharing on the virtues of Mother Mary such as Obedience, Faithfulness, Humility, Charity, Intercessor, Mercy and Compassion by the priests giving examples of their personal encounter with Mother Mary was marvellous and thought provoking. The choir and the liturgy animated by different wards of the Parish and the African community added solemnity to the occasion. Overall the live streaming of the Novena day Holy Eucharist on You tube and Facebook enabled hundreds of devotees of Mother Mary pray and participate fervently.

Rev. Fr. Peter Emmanuel, Rector of Pratiksha Major Seminary was the main celebrant at both the Eucharist celebrations on the Feast Day, 25th October 2020. Frs. Deepak Soreng and D. Britto were the concelebrants. In his homily at both the masses Fr. Peter brought out biblical quotes as to how Mother Mary was a chosen vessel of God to be the Mother of Jesus. He exhorted the people of God to get emulated from Mother Mary and practice faithfulness in God, pray, love and serve the humanity as set out by our Mother, full of Graces. He urged the faithful to thank God and pray to save us from the Pandemic and serve one another practicing love. Fr. Deepak expressing festal greetings thanked the choir, parish council members and all those who sponsored and supported celebration of the Feast as also the Novena day masses. He thanked all those who were not present but participating in the Holy Eucharist through live streaming of the events. In view of the pandemic the traditional procession carrying the statue of Mother Mary along the lanes of Vikaspuri this year and the usual fellowship meal were cancelled.

20 The Voice of Delhi A Month Dedicated to Mary Ms. Aurita Claire John

“The rosary is the most beautiful and the most rich in graces of all prayers” - Pope Saint Pius X

s in the previous years, this year too the October month of the Holy Rosary Awas very special for us Marians. Pope John Paul II has said that the rosary is a vocal prayer, a meditation and can lead to contemplation. Our principal Rev Sr. Merlin strongly believes in the power and the relevance of reciting the rosary. Even as we were away from our students Rev Sr. wanted to continue this Marian tradition of praying the rosary which began on October 1st and concluded on October 31st.

With Sister’s guidance, Mrs Elizabeth Biju made sure it is smoothly conducted. Each class from 6th-12th said the rosary for four days each and different time slots were given. Students, teachers and our sisters joined the time slots to continue the chain of rosary meditating on the intention for the quick control of the corona virus currently ravaging our world.

The closing of the month of October was done virtually with great solemnity, devotion and dedication on October 31st at 3 pm. It began with an introductory hymn and prayer by Rev Sr. Poonam. The joyful mysteries were announced and the intentions were prayed by different teachers ending with the litany by Sr. Rose and a concluding hymn to our Lady.

Our principal Rev Sr. Merlin thanked everyone for reciting the rosary together and asked us to continue to strengthen our belief in Mother Mary and power of the rosary.

The most interesting part was the rebuttal round as a volley of questions were answered confidently by speakers. The session was a good combination of opinions, thoughts ideas and perspectives that enhanced the knowledge and understanding of the topic among students.

The participants were well-prepared and undoubtedly convinced the audience of their beliefs and views with their effective facial expressions and proper voice modulation. They exhibited excellent oratory skills. The competition was an enthralling experience for the speakers as well as for the audience.

Twin Celebrations at St Mary’s Ms. Agna Abraham

ur school celebrated both the joyous festival of lights and children’s day with its vigour and enthusiasm on 14th November, 2020 on our YouTube channel E-Marians. OThe virtual celebrations began with the singing of shlokas, lighting of the ceremonial lamp and graceful dance performances that brought in a lot of festive cheer. It was heart - warming to see the students pledge not to burst crackers but to light diyas in honour of those working selflessly for others in these trying times.

This year because of the pandemic restrictions, the nature of celebrations had changed. However, this did not stop the teachers and the school management to showcase their love for our dear students. The teachers paid a tribute to their students showering their love with a semi classical dance performance, a medley of songs and inspiring messages for students by our principal and teachers wishing and blessing them with happiness and love.

A number of online creative activities like rangoli making, e-collage making, short- film making on pollution and cracker free Diwali, handmade lanterns, best out of waste etc. were conducted during the Diwali week in which our students participated with a lot of interest. These activities were appreciated by all parents and the entries received were in large numbers.

Our little shining stars from the Primary Wing also had a virtual assembly where they performed well with a mesmerizing Diwali dance and by remembering our dear Chacha Nehru on the occasion of Children’s day.

It was indeed a magical stroke of luck that this year Diwali fell on the same day dedicated to the innocence of a child- Children’s Day.

In this way, the Marian family embraced the festive vibes and made Diwali and Children’s day, amidst a pandemic, a memorable one.

22 The Voice of Delhi Narela Rosary School Principal: Fr. Savariraj A day of relaxation amid COVID-19 Ms. Chitra

ith the lockdown restrictions, online classes, half yearly exams and the hectic schedules amid pandemic, we the staff of Rosary School, Narela wanted to spend a day out. Since COVID-19 cases increase in Delhi, we planned to Wspend the day at Rosary Sr.Sec. School, Kheri Manajat. The staff of Rosary Sr.Sec. School, Kheri Manajat welcomed us with showers of flowers. After the welcome drink, we started the day with a prayer at 9.30 am. After a small introduction with our fellow colleagues, we started the day with a game called ‘Passing the Parcel’. In this game whosoever would be holding the parcel at the end of music, would have to perform any task given to him or her. The game continued for quite some time and everyone enjoyed it fully including a good level of participation from our respected principal and sisters. After some time appetizers were prepared and served by our loving sisters. The day continued with dancing on the dance floor, creating a very elated moment. We gathered for lunch at 1 o’clock in the school backyard. The beauty of this moment was that all the mouthwatering food, snacks and dishes were prepared by the teachers and sisters themselves. Each one of us brought for others. We shared our lunch. A prayer was said before the lunch by Rev.Fr. Savariraj Augustine. Everyone enjoyed the meal very much.

The outing provided us happiness, fun, feeling of oneness and strengthened the bond between the teachers of both the schools and with all other staff. We too really felt that Rosary Sr. Sec School, Kheri Manajat is the extension of Rosary School, Narela. We all made this day a beautiful real life experience of rejoicing picnic with everyone. The environment of Rosary Sr.Sec. School, Kheri Manajat gave us an experience of being surrounded by greenery and beauty of nature. We took photos of our outing to cherish our memories. Indeed it was a great day for all and gave us a feeling of great days ahead.

elebrating events and festivals in schools are an integral Cpart of learning and building a strong cultural belief in students. The prominent festivals like Diwali, BhaiDuj, Chhat Puja and Children's day are around the corner and people have started figuring out the ways to plan safe celebrations.

Since, we are still in the midst of pandemic; the safety of our children is our upmost priority. So, Rosary school, Narela decided to celebrate virtual Diwali and Children's day this year. The program started with the oration by Rev. Fr. Savariraj, the principal who gave a magnificent essence to celebrate eco- friendly Diya Diwali and "SAY NO TO CRACKERS." The focal point of principal’s message was to make everyone aware that pollution is on the rise in Delhi – NCR which causes the increase in the COVID-19. So, we the Rosarians took an oath not to burn crackers and make this Diwali pollution free celebration. As the principal’s message was reached well in advance to the students, they too have taken an oath not to burn crackers. They sent the posters to the respective class teachers as prove that they have taken the oath. It was really an eye opener and enlightenment for everyone in and around Narela. The purpose of sending Diwali message to the students well in advance was to prepare them and the parents to celebrate only Diya Diwli.

A short skit on theme"Together we care for the planet" was presented to showcase the change in attitude of students in celebration of Diwali. The essence of celebration of Diwali - love, joy, happiness and sharing remains but ways of celebration are changed. The ways of celebration should be changed to a safe environment.

A festival of supreme light, enlightening our hearts and strengthening human bonds…

iwali or Deepavali is one of the major festivals of Hindus, Jains and Sikhs celebrated in India. The festival usually lasts for five days and is celebrated during the Hindu luni solar month Kartika (between mid-October and mid- DNovember). It symbolises the spiritual triumph of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. In hindsight, it seems as though this year has been nothing short of a year of triumphs, a year where we didn’t allow the consequences of the pandemic to crush our spirits. It has been a year that helped us discover our strengths.

St Michael's Sr. Sec. School, 3 Pusa Road, New Delhi celebrated this holy festival with the same zeal, enthusiasm and vigour on 12th Nov 2020. An online function was organised to celebrate this joyous festival of lights. Teacher in-charges for organizing this successful event were Mr Manoj, Mrs Sushma, Mr Rishi and Mrs Elizabeth.

The programme was telecasted through Google Meet for staff and the students. Students from classes 7th and 8th participated in the event.

Importance of Lakshmi Pujan was also illustrated by students. The importance of this festival was set forth in the form of Ramlila act which was the highlight of the event.

This year, as Delhi struggled with yet another wave of pollution, a PPT Presentation was displayed to highlight the importance of Green Diwali and protection of Mother Nature. A short Skit was also staged to spread the message of precaution during this time of pandemic by maintaining social distance, wearing masks and celebrating cracker-free Diwali. World Mental Health Day 2020

OCTOBER 10th 2020 Mr. Abhishek, Ms. Anu, Ms. Shivani (2nd year M.Sc Nursing) Holy Family college of nursing.

“What mental health needs is more sunlight, more candour, and more unashamed conversation.”

The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes World Mental Health Day on 10 October every year, with the overall objective of raising awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilizing efforts in support of mental health.

The world with 1 billion people is dealing with mental disorder, around 3 million dies with alcohol abuse and every 40 seconds a person commits suicides. The outspread of infection has put up a question on accommodating people in mental health care institution, whereas demands in society has risen to the peak and also draws immediate attention towards it. Thus, there is an urgent need to address this issue and to seek certain ways to really help health care consumers in health care accessibility.

“For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”- Isiah9:6 (NRSV) Christmas is in just weeks. Indeed, this year has been really agonizing and a nightmare to all of us. This may seem unrealistic, but have you ever wondered that such a tiny microorganism would be a reason for such a huge cause of this widespread and counterfeited trillions of people around the Globe? Days passed, Months passed, in just a blink of an eye. This year, either someone or somebody has struggled, lost their loved ones or even lost their own lives. So on what purpose should we celebrate Christmas this year despite this pandemic? Before we answer this question, let us think what Christmas “actually” means. Is it all about the decorations we do at our homes, buying Christmas trees or baking cakes? Is it impeccably adorable decorations we see at every corner of the city, buying gifts and singing carols with glee? Is it the most awaited time of the calendar of the year? Or is it ONLY celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ? But we also believe that: Christmas, is a time that brings us together and while there are many movies and books that depict crazy times when families do get together. The current circumstances we are facing in the world today in the midst of COVID-19 pandemic, I would like to express my thoughts on this year’s “Global Christmas message”. Let’s go about its Origin. Christmas is a day when Our Lord Jesus Christ, Our God, came on this Earth in a form of a child to bring peace and save us from our sins. We can clearly indicate that he was an “incarnation”. An incarnation of God. If we can understand its literal meaning, Christmas is about the word “incarnation”. The Apostles’ Creed doesn’t use the word “incarnation”, but it teaches the doctrine of the Incarnation when it says, “conceived by the power of the holy spirit, born of the Virgin Mary”. Jesus not only came into this world to bring immediate peace and save us from our wrongdoings. He came for a mission. A mission to preach and spread the Good News to the people. Our Almighty God became Emmanuel, “God is with us”, so that we can live with him till eternity. The Mother of Jesus received a divine interruption like any other. As Archangel Gabriel exclaimed with joy “Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed are thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb!” She hadn’t known she would be the Mother of God to whom she is giving birth to. In my perspective, I see Christmas as a good time, a kind, giving, and a charitable time and, of course, celebration of the birth of our Saviour Jesus Christ. But I also see it as a time of preparedness for the next phase of our lives, that is, the coming year. Preparedness of our Faith, closeness and trust towards God. A time of healing, forgiveness and repentance. Doing a sin is like a drug. Once you get the habit of it, you can’t get rid of it. No matter how hard you try, you will always fall back into the sin. Christmas is about fulfilling those promises which we promised to Our Lord and to be what he wants us to be- a beautiful creature of his mankind. “Want to keep Christ in Christmas? Feed the hungry, clothe the naked, forgive the guilty, welcome the unwanted, care for the ill, love your enemies, and do unto others as you would have done unto you.” says Steve Maraboli, in his book Unapologetically You: Reflections on Life and the Human Experience. This is the real essence of Christmas. A bit of change will be there with the definition of Christmas, especially this year. As in this current scenario and restriction of movement from our homes, we may not be able to celebrate Christmas which we earlier used to celebrate; singing carols, Christmas tree, etc. This year, Jesus plays a very significant role in our lives. As the title suggests “strangely wrapped, silently delivered…”, we not only celebrate the birth, but rejoice, thank and praise God for delivering an indescribable gift to us through Mary we have a joy, which shaped and transformed our lives. In Christmas this year, we offer all our joys, sorrows, worries that dwell within us and have experienced all these months. Praying for the homeless, poor, old age and the underprivileged. Praying for the stranded labourers, searching for jobs and all the people working in and across the country. And most importantly, praying for this pandemic to end.“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)
