2 CROSS COUNTRY 2011-2012 HEAD COACH SEAN SEVERSON Sean Severson is in his eighth season as Grove City College head men’s and women’s cross country coach. Severson has guided Grove City’s traditionally strong program to even greater heights during his first seven seasons. Both the men’s and women’s programs have emerged on the regional and national landscape during his tenure. The women’s team has won the Presidents’ Athletic Conference title in each of his seven years and the men have won six conference crowns in that span. Last year, the Grove City women’s team made its first-ever appearance at the NCAA Divi- sion III Championships, placing 29th nationally. Additionally, Garrett Cichowitz advanced to the NCAA meet for the third consecutive season on an individual basis. In 2009, Severson guided Grove City’s teams to top 10 finishes at the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships. The women placed fourth and the men earned 10th place at the regional meet. Sara Fisher, Emily Pierce and Ella Smith all earned All-Mideast honors. Severson received PAC Coach of the Year following the 2009 season. He also earned that award in 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2008. Since 2004, the women’s team has placed sixth or higher at the Mideast Regional five times. Meanwhile, the men’s team achieved top 10 finishes three times in the last four seasons. Two runners have achieved NCAA Division III All-America status during Severson’s tenure at Grove City. In 2004, Elisa Pedersen became Grove City’s first women’s cross country runner to become an All-American. She again accomplished that feat as a senior in 2005. In 2007, Kristen Carter became Grove City’s second women’s cross country All-American. Overall, Grove City runners have qualified for the NCAA Championships in each of Severson’s first seven years as head coach. Grove City runners have earned 11 total PAC Most Valuable Performer awards over the past six seasons. A total of 53 C OACHING runners have achieved First Team All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference in that span. Severson is also the assistant men’s basketball coach at Grove City. In that role, he is heavily involved in scouting, practice development and recruiting. He helped the basketball program earn four consecutive postseason berths along with the 2007 and 2010 conference titles. Severson joined the Grove City staff during the summer of 2004 after working as a graduate assistant at Adams State S

College in Alamosa, Colorado for two seasons. While at Adams State, Severson worked as an assistant men’s basketball TAFF coach as well as a graduate assistant athletic trainer. A native of Menomonee Falls, Wis., Severson earned a bachelor of arts degree in athletic training from the of Minnesota-Morris in May 2002. At Minnesota-Morris, Severson captained the basketball team and earned Academic All- Conference recognition from the Northern Sun Conference three times. He also earned Dean’s List honors. Severson earned his master’s degree in health, physical education and recreation in 2004 from Adams State. He recently earned Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist distinction from the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He lives in Grove City with his wife, Tara, and their four daughters. 3 GROVE CITY COLLEGE SEASON PREVIEW The Grove City College cross country teams both enter the 2011 season in somewhat unfamiliar positions. The women’s team looks to build upon its first-ever trip to the NCAA Division III Championships. Meanwhile, the men’s team aims to return to the top of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference in 2011 after having its two-decade run as conference champion come to an end in 2010. Both teams are well-stocked with returning veterans who will be key components in each team’s success this fall. On the women’s side, Grove City returns four of its seven runners who competed in the NCAA Championships last fall. Among that quartet are two-time All-Mideast Re- gion honorees Sara Fisher and Ella Smith. Smith placed second at the 2010 PAC Championships and then earned 13th at the Mideast Championships to earn her second All-Region honor. Fisher finished third in the conference and also achieved All-Region with a 20th-place finish. Both are among the top returners in the region. Grove City also welcomes back senior Mary Rachel Robbins and junior Hillary Wilson from its regional roster. Robbins owns three letters while Wilson is a returning All- PAC honoree. REVIEW Junior Mary Kate Breese earned All-PAC honors in 2010

P and will look to remain a fixture in the lineup this fall. Also back are senior Allison Heslop and junior letterwinners Anna Sophomore Alec Schultz (left) earned All-PAC in 2010 Dunsworth and Mary Seward. while classmate Mark Talbott (right) is a returning

EASON letterwinner.

S Grove City will also be bolstered by sophomore letterwinners Cayla Clawson, Grace Postma, Austin Powell, Laurel Skorup and Emily Thompson. Sixteen veterans return on the men’s side, giving Grove City one of the region’s most experienced squads. Seniors Tyler Gheres and Ben Lutz will help lead the 2011 Wolver- ines after having earned three letters each at Grove City. Six juniors also return for the 2011 season: multi-year letterwinners Wesley Coopersmith, Tim Coyle, Ben Henderson, Daniel Landskroener, Francis Ridge and Josiah Tobin. Coyle earned All-Conference honors as a freshman. Several sophomores are also back after making an immediate impact as freshmen in 2010. Sophomores Arleigh McRae and Alec Schultz both earned Second Team All-PAC last year and will likely be at or near the top of the Grove City lineup this season. Grove City also welcomes back second-year perform- ers Paulson Domasky, Randy Holcombe, Mike Miller, Matt Mucha and Mark Talbott. The Wolverines may also receive contributions from several newcomers this season. Grove City will open the 2011 season at the Westminster Invitational September 3. The PAC Championships will be held October 29 at Westminster College in New Wilmington, Juniors Mary Seward (left), Anna Dunsworth (center) Pa. The NCAA Mideast Championships are scheduled for and Mary Kate Breese (right) all return for Grove City. November 12 in Allentown, Pa.

9 GROVE CITY COLLEGE 2010 MEN’S SEASON REVIEW Numerous highlights dotted the 2010 season for the Grove City College men’s cross country team, which re- corded one invitational title, several other strong perfor- mances during the regular season and solid efforts at the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Championships and NCAA Mideast Region Championships. Senior Garrett Cichowitz closed his stellar career at the College by earning All-Mideast Region honors and advanc- ing to the NCAA Division III Championships for the third straight season. Cichowitz concluded the year by receiving the College’s Sportsman of the Year award for 2010-11, along with CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition. While the 2010 season proved to be a proper valedic- tion for Cichowitz and fellow seniors Gordon Grob and Cordell Oberholtzer, the year also became a showcase for the next generation of Wolverine standouts.
