Day two of Book 3 offers yearlings adjudged a step down on the first session, but vendors can be optimistic given events in the ring yesterday. Selling starts at 10am. MEHMAS AGAIN FOR ACE PINHOOK A six-figure sale at Book 3 is for many a source of pride, but a six- figure pinhook profit from the catalogue is a rare and notable thing. That achievement was pulled off twice yesterday, first up by a partnership involving Kitty Cowhey and Luke Barry – she of Loughmore Stables, he of Manister House Stud – who bought a daughter of leading first-crop sire Mehmas (Lot 1367) for €11,000 at Goffs in November and sold her for 130,000gns yesterday. Tom Goff of Blandford Bloodstock posted the winning bid on behalf of Newmarket trainer Ed Dunlop, whose purchase was a half-sister to the Listed-placed filly All Star Cast. Reflecting on the day the yearling walked into her life, Cowhey, who consigned the profit-maker from her Kildare base, said: “She was a lovely filly and has been delightful since the day we bought her The Queen of Racing and, of course, Mehmas has gone on to have a great season which has helped no end. As a foal she walked well and she was always strong and powerful. “She came here and behaved like a queen and all the right lads were on. I didn’t expect her to make that sort of money, but I was always confident there would be a twist [profit] in her.” Cowhey’s good fortune seems to be rolling on, for she said: “I liked this filly so much I put a mare in foal to Mehmas. Gr.1 Enable, Channel, “I’ve sold 12 yearlings this year and have two more to go [Lots winners God Given 1829 and 1931 today]. Long may it last.” Goff said: “I saw her in pouring rain yesterday and again this 3 winners Dashing Willoughby morning, and she is an absolute star. Ed Dunlop rang me at 9.50am this morning from Warren Hill and asked if anything was in early. I Gr.1/Gr.2 horses from said there is a lovely filly and it went from there.” 16 his first 3 crops of 3yo’s Mehmas’s appeal was also seen in a colt (Lot 1473), who was bred by Gerry and Maura O’Sullevan at their Cooneen Stud.
