Our church really had two beginnings. One led by Thomas and Alexander Campbell and the other by Barton Stone. We will study each and then find out how they merged and fit it all together. THE CAMPBELLS Thomas Campbell was a Presbyterian minister and schoolteacher in Ireland. The Presbyterian Church was kind of divided into five groups. Thomas Campbell was part of the Evangelical, New Light, Anti-Burgher, Secedar Presbyterians. (How would you like to tell that to people every time they asked you what church you go to.) That group was liberal and evangelical in comparison to the others that were very rigid in what they believed. In 1807 Thomas Campbell immigrated to American to establish a home so that his family could join him later. He brought with him his authority to be a minister in the Presbyterian Church, his Bible, and possibly a few books and personal belongings. For two years he was a circuit minister. This meant that he traveled around on horseback and gave communion to the people who lived in rural Pennsylvania. According to the rules of his church in Ireland he was only allowed to give the Lord’s Supper to those who were a part of the New Light, Anti-Burgher, Secedar Presbyterian church. -

Some Thoughts on Quakers in Scotland During the Last Half Century
'STANDS SCOTLAND WHERE IT DID?' SOME THOUGHTS ON QUAKERS IN SCOTLAND DURING THE LAST HALF CENTURY think I first heard the word Quaker from my father. It was in rather curious circumstances. I can have been only five or six years old, I but I have a very clear picture of him, jogging around the small parlour in the manse in Lochgelly in a sort of shuffle as he intoned the words (one could scarcely call it singing): Merrily danced the Quaker's wife, Merrily danced the Quaker. I had no idea of the significance of the words, and I do not know what they meant to my father. Only many years later was I to learn that the tune and the words were traditional and that Robert Burns, that great authority on the folk music of Scotland, had written to the tune what he thought was 'one of the finest songs I ever made in my life', but the wore s, the catchy tune and my father's enthusiasm stirred my youthful interest and I had an immediate and lasting impression of Quakers as happy joyful people. Then some two years later when I was beginning piano lessons with the church organist you can imagine my pleasure when I found in my Hemy's Tutor that one of my first practice pieces was 'Merrily danced the Quaker'. The first Quaker I met I came across perhaps five or six years later in the pages of Sir Walter Scott's novel, Redgauntlet. I would not have you think that I was reading the Waverley novels, complete and unabridged, when I was ten or twelve years old, even though I had a father and an uncle who were devoted admirers of the novelist. -

The ``Betrothed'' did not greatly please one or two friends, who thought that it did not well correspond to the general title of ``The Crusaders.'' They urged, therefore, that without direct allusion to the manners of the Eastern tribes, and to the romantic conflicts of the period, the title of a ``Tale of the Crusaders'' would resemble the play-bill which is said to have announced the tragedy of Hamlet, the character of the Prince of Denmark being left out. On the other hand, I felt the difficulty of giving a vivid picture of a part of the world with which I was almost totally unacquainted, unless by early recollections of the ``Arabian Nights' Entertainments;'' and not only did I labour under the incapacity of ignorance, in which, as far as regards Eastern manners, I was as thickly wrapped as an Egyptian in his fog; but my contemporaries were, many of them, as much enlightened upon the subject, as if they had been inhabitants of the favoured land of Goshen. The love of travelling had pervaded all ranks, and carried the subjects of Britain into all quarters of the world. Greece, so attractive by its remains of art, by its struggles for freedom against a Mahomedan tyrant, by its very name, where every fountain had its classical legend;---Palestine, endeared to the imagination by yet more sacred remembrances, had been of late surveyed by British eyes, and described by recent travellers. -

Benjamin Taylor (1786-1848) a Jones/Smith Preacher in Antebellum Michigan Thomas H. Olbricht Pepperdine University My remarks focus on Benjamin Taylor (1786-1846) who was one of the early 1 Michigan restorationists. I don’t know how to relate his efforts to later restorationist churches in the state, but some continuity is almost guaranteed. This earliest Michigan restorationist history—most of the decade of the 1830s—remains to be explored. Identifying ties with later Stone-Campbell Michigan churches is possible, I am convinced, because of the several journals published by the leaders of the Abner Jones/Elias Smith movement of which Taylor was a part and by leaders of the Stone- Campbell movement. Taylor was born in Beverly, Massachusetts, twenty miles northeast of Boston into 2 a family of Baptists. Somewhat later they moved to New Hampshire and then to Salem, Massachusetts, where they became members of the Christian church founded just a few years before. Abner Jones preached for the Salem congregation at that time. Taylor responded to the Christian call in 1802 at a Freewill Baptist revival but did not become a 3 member of that church. He went to sea at least twice making his last voyage to France. After a narrow escape he became more interested in religion and in 1809 became a member of the Salem church. Taylor preached at various places in southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island. In the spring of 1831 he made a short trip to Illinois and Michigan. Lionel Lackey Vainly Expected Messiahs: Christianity, Chivalry and Charity in Ivanhoe Ivanhoe, Scott I s account of ethnic, political, and military conflict in England after the unsuccessful Third Crusade, is closer to being a religious novel than commentators have acknowledged. Its central struggle is between the forces of superstition, bigotry, and brutality and those of enlightened jus tice and mercy, with the varieties of religious experience in the novel serving as a medium to convey all these attitudes. No one claims that Scott was a theologian, his Religious Discourses by a Layman notwithstanding. l Yet the truth may be not so much that his treat- 1Scott's little-known Religious Discourses by a Layman (Philadelphia, 1828) comprises two sermons which he wrote for a clergyman friend, George Huntly Gordon. John Buchan speaks of their "irreproachable orthodoxy" (Buchan, p. 315), a characterization with which I concur: In his preface Scott acknowledges that "they contain no novelty of opinion" (Discourses VH).
