When it’s “all happening” on a Hobie... you need to be confident in your equipment.

2002 Continental Championship team Greg Thomas and Jacques Bernier agree on one thing... they love racing! But, they can’t agree on which harness is best. Greg prefers the Hobie Convertible Harness, but Jacques wears the Hobie Automatic Harness. Greg likes the freedom of movement that the Hobie Convertible offers when worn without the shoulder straps. Jacques likes the clean design and snug fit of the Hobie Automatic.

CONVERTIBLE HARNESS “Converts” easily from a half harness to full harness with the addition of shoulder straps (included). The all around harness for both racers and recreational sailors where comfort, support and mobility are key. For recreational or racer sailors the half harness has enough back support to keep you comfortable on the tramp or the trap. Just add the shoulder straps for those long days out on the where extra back support is needed. Extra stiff back support, padded leg straps / shoulder straps, adjustable lumbar support, neoprene covers over buckles and a stainless spreader bar. It all adds up to keeping you comfortable and having fun on the water.

FULL “AUTO” HARNESS New spreader ratcheting feature allows easy adjustment of harness around hips. Ratchet strap system keeps the harness adjusted the way you like it while reducing the “loose strap ends” common with other harness designs. Clean design keeps you free from tangles. For those looking for added back support and comfort while on the trapeze. Great for spending lots of time on the wire. Crotchless design with neoprene leg straps, adjustable lumbar support, neoprene covers over side buckles. Reinforced patch on the seat. Comes with stainless spreader bar. conversion.qxd 8/8/03 11:18 AM Page 1

Pig Tales continued from previous page The Organizing Committee is excited to announce that NAHCA Division 3 is the presenting sponsor of the 2003 Hobie 16 Youth Continental Championships. Division 3 has raised the $2,000 sponsorship by donating all the proceeds of a recently held Treasure Island points regatta, held on San Francisco Bay, hosted by Hobie Fleet 281; along with having a special raffle at the Regatta at Monterey Bay, California. The members of Division 3 realize how important these Championships are to the future of Hobie Cat racing so that is why they are excited to be the main sponsor of this year’s Championships held on the opposite side of the country. 100% of these funds will be used on Tee Shirts, trophies, gas for chase boats and the banquet for all the youth teams. At this time Division 3 only has one team participating in this year’s Championships, but hopes to have more next year. Jean Tully has donated two plane tickets for Jake Sailor & Cliff Neff to represent the Division 3 Youth. Last year in Fort Walton Beach, they finished second and have been racing together all year to hopefully win this time around. The NAHCA Youth program run by Gary Russell is paying for all the Pre-registration fee for every Youth team participating in the Youth Championships. The late penalty is still in effect so register early. All in Division 3 hope this will encourage other Divisions to come up with creative ways to raise funds to keep activities like this alive. NAHCA Division 11 is also sponsoring the Youth event by subsidizing Charter Boats for youth teams. PAGE 16 JUNE - JULY - AUGUST 2003 NAHCA NEWS 2003 Guest Expert Program Off to a Great Start!

by Kathleen Tracy, NAHCA GEP Coordinator & Treasurer

Friday, May 2, marked the beginning of the 2003 GEP series. Susan Korzeniewski traveled south to St. George Island, Florida, for her second year running. The event was fantastic according to Larry Hale, SGI Youth Regatta orga- nizer, who is extremely proud of everyone who participated in Saturday’s races. A total of twenty-five youth plus six adults listened intently as Susan began her presentation discussing the importance of goal setting in sailing. “Goals we set are the goals we get!” she reminded them. She talked about safety next, and from there jumped into the Hobie U booklet. The kids learned all about sailing maneuvers and boat handling as well as courses, starts, and basic rules. Susan included a hands-on quiz for the start sequence to make sure everyone had the flags down pat. Susan wrapped up the morning session with a rigging and boat tuning demonstration to get the students ready for the afternoon on-the-water drills. The kids spent the afternoon practicing stopping the boat, holding it in place and moving again, learning where the start line is and rounding marks. Susan did plenty of coaching on the water, while assistants videotaped everyone. During the debriefing the video was reviewed with lots of discussion. Susan offered more boat tuning advice as a wrap-up. All this learning on Friday made for an excellent day of racing on Saturday. Only seconds separated the first and second place teams. The “Screaming Wenches” girls team did very well. Susan complimented all the youth on their improved sailing skills and encouraged all of them to continue their pursuit of excellent Hobie racing. Fleet 204 was thrilled to have Greg Thomas present the next GEP at the Madcatter Regatta, May 16. Greg took second place at the Tiger Worlds in in February 2003, first on the Tiger at the Mega last fall, and second and first at the last two H-20 Continentals. Racers learned how he makes those big boats go so fast. Over Memorial Day weekend, NAHCA’s hottest H-16 racer, Wally Myers, will present a GEP at the Sand Snake Regatta in Little Rock, Arkansas. Wally has won the H-16 Continentals three out of the past five years and really knows how to make a Hobie fly. Fleet 241 from Division 14 is hosting this event, just in time for Mid-Americas a few weeks later. Stay tuned for the latest update from those events. There are a couple more GEP requests for this season on which we are still working. Please check the NAHCA website Images of Sue Korzeniewski and the Boy Scouts, (nahca.org) for updates. If you are a past champion and would at the 2003 St. George’s Island GEP in Florida. be willing to share your secrets with other racers, please Photos by Bryce Hale. contact Kathleen Tracy, [email protected].

A VIEW FROM THE COMMITTEE BOAT Saturday morning, we learned that the Committee Boat, which had been arranged months in advance, didn’t make it by Tony Krauss, Commodore Fleet 514, Tucson, AZ to San Felipe because the owner was called to National Guard duty. It was hoped that a local boat would be found, but that Craig and Kristen Candito picked me up at around noon on couldn’t be done on short notice. Thursday in Tucson, Arizona. We ran two flawless races, saw some close finishes, and were back on the beach for awards and breakdown. My final dinner that night was at the Lighthouse with a view overlooking the town. I had a final night’s sleep, and we were back on the road the next morning. We had a map to guide us to the border this time, and were back in Tucson Monday afternoon. Thanks again to Kristen and Craig for the ride there and back, the Perlmutters for a place to stay, and Ron and Shirley Palmer for an amazing event. I’ll be back! (If I had known that I would be laid off on Tuesday, I would have stayed longer, but hey, there’s plenty of time for sailing now...)

35 years of watersports innovation brings you the . An excellent choice for younger sailors, but fun for all ages. Roomy cockpit comfortably accommodates one or two sailors. Lightweight, easy to handle, quick to rig and launch. Much more stable than other boats its size. Twin hull design offers speed and stability. Large sail area makes the Bravo responsive in light wind. The square top sail makes it forgiving in gusty conditions. Great visibility. Effortless tacks and jibes.
