Joining Cymbeline in repertoire over the summer I will direct a production of King Lear with Antony Sher in the title role. Having tackled the role of Willy Loman in Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman in 2015, Antony now takes on Shakespeare’s complex tragic king; a man, much like Willy Loman, who watches helplessly as his life fractures around him. Following that production I will then direct The Tempest, with Simon Russell Beale returning to the company after a gap of over 20 years, to play Prospero. Inspired by the spectacular masques of Shakespeare’s day, we have set ourselves the challenge of creating TO the most technologically advanced production ever staged by the RSC. Working in collaboration with Intel and in association with The Imaginarium Studios we will be using technology never used on stage in this way before to conjure up Prospero’s island, inhabited by an array of magical and fantastical characters. As well as the great Shakespeare Jubilee, 2016 is also the 30th anniversary of the Swan Theatre. To celebrate we will stage the two plays that originally opened the theatre; Shakespeare and Fletcher’s The Two Noble Kinsmen, directed by Blanche McIntyre and Aphra Behn’s The Rover, directed by Loveday Ingram. The season will end with a new play by Anders Lustgarten, The Seven Acts of Mercy. Switching between the 17th century and the present day, this thrilling play charts the creation of Caravaggio’s masterpiece and how its depiction of acts of compassion echoes through the ages. 2016 will also see the re-opening of The Other Place as our new studio theatre, rehearsal complex and home to our extensive costume store. In July and August it will host a new work festival responding to the provocation, “what is truly unsayable in Britain in the 21st century”. Details will be announced in Spring 2016. Alongside the work on stage will be workshops, debates and activities for audiences of all ages, including specific work for students, teachers and families. I hope that you will be able to join us as we celebrate the lasting HE WAS NOT OF AN AGE, legacy of Shakespeare and his continuing ability to speak to us about the BUT FOR ALL TIME! emotions, issues and events that shape our lives today.
