For more information contact [email protected] The Role of Emotion and Context in Musical Preference Yading Song PhD thesis Thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of London School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science Queen Mary, University of London United Kingdom January 2016 Abstract The powerful emotional effects of music increasingly attract the attention of music informa- tion retrieval researchers and music psychologists. In the past decades, a gap exists between these two disciplines, and researchers have focused on different aspects of emotion in music. Music information retrieval researchers are concerned with computational tasks such as the classifica- tion of music by its emotional content, whereas music psychologists are more interested in the understanding of emotion in music. Many of the existing studies have investigated the above issues in the context of classical music, but the results may not be applicable to other genres. This thesis focusses on musical emotion in Western popular music combining knowledge from both disciplines. I compile a Western popular music emotion dataset based on online social tags, and present a music emotion classification system using audio features corresponding to four different musical dimensions. Listeners' perceived and induced emotional responses to the emotion dataset are compared, and I evaluate the reliability of emotion tags with listeners' ratings of emotion using two dominant models of emotion, namely the categorical and the dimensional emotion models. In the next experiment, I build a dataset of musical excerpts identified in a questionnaire, and I train my music emotion classification system with these audio recordings. I compare the differences and similarities between the emotional responses of listeners and the results from automatic classification. Music emotions arise in complex interactions between the listener, the music, and the situa- tion. In the final experiments, I explore the functional uses of music and musical preference in everyday situations. Specifically, I investigate emotional uses of music in different music-listening situational contexts. Finally, I discuss the use of emotion and context in the future design of subjective music recommendation systems and propose the study of musical preference using musical features. 1 I, Yading Song, confirm that the research included within this thesis is my own work or that where it has been carried out in collaboration with, or supported by others, that this is duly acknowledged below and my contribution indicated.     Intercultural Communication Studies XVII: 2 2008 Cheang Choice of Foreign Names as a Strategy for Identity Management Justina Cheang, University of Macau Regardless of the fact that Macau’s dominating population are Chinese, English names, or to be more exact, foreign names, are favored and widely used, be it in the businesses, the government, or education institutions. Though Chinese (Cantonese) is spoken by most in the city, local Chinese people’s favor in the use of English/foreign names, whether they are students, civil servants, or working in the business, does reflect their taste and their desired image to be displayed to others. Interviews are conducted showing that people’s choice of English/foreign names are somehow a strategy for identity management – certain names are chosen to show a pleasant personality, or other desirable qualities that they wanted to project to others. It is interesting to note that, other than English names, people would choose Portuguese names, Japanese names, names of things (non-proper names), or even people’s own creation for use. A Chinese saying: “One does not fear if he/she has a bad fate; what one fears most is to be given a bad name.” Rather than a Chinese saying, this should also be a universal consideration when most parents all over the world are finding names for their children. Most people get their names when they are born, and very often they themselves are not involved in the decision-making. What if we get a chance to decide on our own name? To get a name by oneself is probably a very unique trend in Asia, and especially, the Chinese communities.

    AKHTAR JAMAL KHAN, BIBHUDUTT DASH Approaches to Angst and the Male World: A Comparative Study of The Bell Jar and the Poetry of a Few Indian Women Poets Pitting Sylvia Plath’s speakers against male chauvinism is a usual critical practice, but this antinomy primarily informs her work. Most of her writings express an anguish that transcends the torment of the individual speakers in question, and voices or represents the despair of all women who undergo similar anguish. As David Holbrook writes: “When one knows Sylvia Plath’s work through and through, and has penetrated her inner topography, the confusion, hate and madness become frighteningly apparent” (357). The besetting question is what causes this angst. Apparently, a stifling patriarchal system that sty- mies woman’s freedom seems to be the cause of this anguish. However, it would be lopsided to say that Plath’s work is simply an Armageddon between man and woman. This paper compares Sylvia Plath’s novel The Bell Jar (1963) and the poetry of a few twentieth-century Indian women poets such as Kamala Das, Mamta Kalia, Melanie Silgardo, Eunice de Souza, Smita Agarwal and Tara Patel to study the angst experienced by the speakers and their approaches to the male world. Here, the term ‘male world’ refers to any social condition where man overtly or tacitly punctuates a woman’s life. Thus, it precisely refers to a patriarchal social order. Talking about twentieth-century poetry and making references to the posi- tion of women poets, John Brannigan writes: “In their time, Elizabeth Jennings, Sylvia Plath and Eliza- beth Bishop seemed isolated and remote from the male-dominated generation of the fifties and sixties” (Poplawski 632).

    HOME ART CULTURE FILM MUSIC STYLE E MAGAZINE A STRUGGLE WITH MEANING - THE ART OF MOUNIR FATMI It was shock, angst, and inescapable panic that introduced me to the work of Mounir Fatmi, a 'French artist in USA, an African artist in Europe'. His kinetic installation Modern Times – A History of the Machine, on show in Denmark's Brandts 131 gallery, sends the viewer into somatic A portrait of Mounir Fatmi overdrive, yet remains acutely conceptual, as it employs referential elements pertaining to both Western and Eastern (Islamic) aesthetics. Visual repetition, perpetual circular motion, illegible Arabic calligraphy, and aggressive sound create a sense of danger, announcing an imminent clash of worlds embracing the mechanics of modernity, but struggling to grasp the essence of it. At times, Fatmi's works tap into strands of speculative philosophy, often breaking down bonds of meaning: objects are dislocated, taken beyond their instrumentality, reconceptualized, separated from the burden of a necessary relation to their qualities, in a potential attempt to explore what Graham Harman would call the 'object oriented ontology'. In Between the Lines, a steel circular saw blade becomes the inscription surface for Quoran verses, which undergo a process of being emptied of semiotic content and rendered decorative elements. Finally, the last article lays out in detail the censorship mechanisms for circulation of artistic creations, promoted in the field of Sinophone studies by music in the PRC, which are more complex and less monolithic than usually Shu-mei Shih (2007), and in cultural studies by Yiu Fai Chow and Jeroen de described, and the ways artists try to circumvent the state’s censorship Kloet (2013) as well as Marc Moskowitz (2010), among others.
