Because when a news organization makes mistakes, it hurts. Ithurts the people who are described erroneously, it hurts the readers and viewers who have absorbed incorrectinformation and it hurts the credibility of the erring news organization and the industry. In the United States, the press's immense power and influence are built largely on the idea that news organizations are trustworthy. Every day at all times of the day we rely on the press to give us the information we need to go about the business of daily living. But getting at the truth and providing accurate, fair and balanced news reports are complex tasks. Newspeople have to make hard choices in order to do their jobs. Here at the Newseum, the world's first interactive museum of news, we hope to help newspeople and news consumers better understand each other. That means discussing anddebating the values of good journalism. We hope you'll visit the Newseum and see for yourself. We've got more news under one roof than any other place in the world, from Pulitzer Prize-winning pieces to tabloid journalism. What better place to teach your students about the role of news media in a free society? Even without a Newseum visit, you and your students can explore the complexities of everyday news decisions. Reese The crisis in the journalism profession has led an ever more concentrated corpo- rate voice to assert itself in academia, diverting blame and shaping how future jour nalists are prepared. Historically interdisciplinary, oriented toward the liberal arts yet professional, journalism education faces mounting pressure to abandon its aca- demic ethos to embrace its industry patrons, choosing from a false dichotomy ad- vanced forcefully by a recent journalism foundation-supported research report.To preserve its value, however, journalism must be part of broader academic reforms, modeling an intellectually independent integration of theory and practice, support- ing not just a media labor pyramid, but also a press-literate public. The 50-ton marble tablet, engraved with the 45 words of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, was displayed on the four-story-high, 74-foot-tall Pennsylvania Avenue façade of the Newseum, a nonprofit museum founded by the Freedom Forum and dedicated to the five freedoms of the First Amendment. Work has begun to remove the stone pieces from the building, which was sold to Johns Hopkins University after the Newseum closed in 2019. The tablet remained the property of the Freedom Forum, and will be a gift to the National Constitution Center. Dan Buettner is an author and adventurer researching places across the globe where people seem to live longer. Now he's come to the island of Ikaria in the Aegean Sea, where he says the rate of heart disease is half that of the U.S., and where 20 percent fewer people get cancer. Dan Buettner: The biggest drain on America's health care system are diseases like cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes. The people here in Ikaria are eluding those diseases at incredibly high numbers. They're getting the good years that we're missing, they tend to live longer lives, healthier, better. Dan has studied longevity hotspots known as "Blue Zones" in Okinawa, Costa Rica, Sardinia, and among the Seventh Day Adventists in California. He's reported his findings in the book "The Blue Zones, Lessons For Living Longer From The People Who've Lived The Longest."     ELIZABETH VARGAS As an award-winning anchor and correspondent, Vargas has traveled the world covering breaking news stories, reporting in-depth investigations and conducting newsmaker interviews. She is the anchor of ABC’s television newsmagazine 20/20 and ABC News specials and she can also be seen on Good Morning America. She previously was an anchor for World News Tonight. During the historic Iraqi elections in December 2005, she anchored World News Tonight from Baghdad. She anchored for both World News Tonight and 20/20 from the U.S. Gulf Coast, covering Hurricane Katrina’s devastation. Vargas has also anchored ABC News coverage of live, breaking news stories including the deaths of President Ronald Reagan and John F. Kennedy, Jr. She won an Emmy in 2000 for Outstanding Instant Coverage of a News Story for anchoring live coverage of the Elian Gonzalez case. Vargas was credited by The New York Times in November 2004 as reinvigorating the newsmagazine format with her “intellectually brave” reporting of an examination of the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, a young man whose murder gained national attention as an anti-gay crime. In July 2003, she hosted “In the Shadow of Laci Peterson”, an ABC News special that examined the disappearances of several young women in northern California and why their stories failed to attract significant media attention. In November 2003, she anchored “Jesus, Mary and Da Vinci”, an hour investigating many theories raised in the best-selling novel The Da Vinci Code.     People, Places, Things Three Mother Seton School, Emmitsburg, middle school students, Matthew Benjamin, Robin Wivell and Mitchell Swope are among dozens of students selected to participate in the Celebration of the Arts 2009 March 23 at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall in Baltimore. Middle and high school students from the Archdiocese of Baltimore gifted in art, dance, drama and music will showcase their talents in an evening performance and display. Doors open at 6 p.m. to view art displays, and the performance begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets, which cost $25 with a $3 service charge, are available through the Meyerhoff Ticket Office. Montalto, known as Deacon Monti, has been elected to the board of directors for the Center for Pregnancy Concerns. Deacon Monti, who serves at St. Thomas Aquinas in Hampden, actively supports the center and is known around Baltimore as the pro-life deacon. He co-chairs the Maryland March for Life each year in Annapolis. Heidi Krannebitter, a 16-year-old varsity cheerleader atMount Carmel High School, Essex, was chosen by the All American Cheer and Dance Association to fly to Honolulu Feb.
