The ADDINGTON ADDINGTON RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION Quarterly Magazine 2019 Issue 4 A not so common ‘British Common Lizard’ in the Back Field Botanical Survey and Butterfly Survey of Back Field (Featherbed Lane) Background At Paul Bearman’s invitation, Peter Wakeman of the Surrey Botanical Society paid a visit to the Back Field. This is his report. Malcolm Bridge, a butterfly expert also visited the site. The butterfly survey report follows on from this. Survey Results A total of 42 species was recorded. Many are indicators of good quality calcareous grassland, such as Wild Basil, Fairy Flax, Marjoram, Lady’s Bedstraw, Lesser Hawkbit and Bird’s-foot Trefoil. Three species of orchid were noted: a small number of Common Spotted Orchids, about a dozen Bee Orchids and, most notably, in excess of 400 Pyramidal Orchids. The latter represent an exceptionally large population of this species for a site of this size. Continued inside….. Chairman's report We hope you have all had a pleasant and enjoyable summer. We have completed our part of the Green Space Review and have sent out the list of Green spaces we want to save to the Council with what proof of use we can establish. We are also looking into the possibility of having Tree Protection Orders put on some of the trees on our green spaces, and we are trying to establish if there are any covenants in place which will make it easier to protect our green spaces. To get insight into these may take some time and we may have to issue a Freedom of Information Request. Fairfield Halls has reopened after £41 million has been spent. The feedback from the refurbishment is not very positive. It seems not very much has been accomplished for this amount of money and the work is still not finished. With regards to the Whitgift Shopping Centre, we have nothing new to report. Greenfields Pioneer Place. The Jehovah Witnesses have now moved out and the buildings have been cleared. As far as we are aware the site has not been put on the market yet so we only have to wait and see what is going to happen. As this will be the final magazine before Christmas may we wish you all Season's Greetings and a peaceful New Year. The Council have confirmed that other areas like Addington Park are already ‘protected’. What3words! No, it’s not a typing error, it’s a new website for finding addresses. How often have you put your address into a website in order to receive a parcel, to find that it is delivered 4 or 5 houses up the road? Our address is ‘The Manse, Huntingfield’ and more often than not I get a phone call from the driver asking where I live as it’s not where the Post Code says it is. Nowadays, we use our “GPS’“ constantly to get to places. That’s if you put the address in correctly. One Sunday afternoon my wife and I left home to go and visit a relative near Oxford. I put what I thought was the correct address into the GPS and off we set. When the little screen on my dash told me we were 15 minutes away, I phoned ahead to say ‘put the kettle on’. Well, to cut a long story short, we were 70 miles off course and only had tea some ninety minutes later. I’d put in the correct street and number not thinking that there were a dozen other places with the same address. This is where “What3words” comes into its own. If you went to their website, you would read this description of what they have done - what3words provides a precise and incredibly simple way to talk about location. We have divided the world into a grid of 3m x 3m squares and assigned each one a unique 3-word address. Better addressing can enhance customer experience, deliver business efficiency, drive growth and support social and economic development. They even have a handy app which you can down load onto your smartphone to help you to use ‘what3words’. So, if I said, “Meet me at “///live.poems.ground”, I would see you by the Addington Residents’ Noticeboard in the car park by the church. Not the driveway or the front entrance to the church – which would be “///gates.successes.charm”. This system has an unending stream of applications for use in our daily lives and the developers have even started a system which will help communities help each other. There are many Emergency Services in the UK that use this system so that in an emergency the needy person’s exact location can be shared with the call handler thereby ensuring sending a response team to their precise location. Go to - https://what3words.com/news/emergency/uk-emergency-services-rollout- what3words-in-control-rooms-to-save-resources-time-and-lives/ to see if our emergency services are listed. If not let’s reach out to them to become involved. You are invited to visit “///sounds.organ.broken” to share in services with us over the Christmas period. Despite the name, I promise you that the sounds of the organ in the church are definitely not broken! Come and hear for yourself and enjoy Christmas with us!
