Her most recent visit was on February 6, 2012 when she worked with 119 students. She has been working with Bob Milligan, a health teacher at Elko High School to promote hazards literacy. The talks have been scheduled in the section of the health curriculum that pertains to “individual risk assessment”. The four basics themes focus on the weather.gov website and how to navigate it, the differences between watches, warnings, and advisories, evacuations, and surface weather (i.e. weather and road con- ditions). The students ranged from sophomores to seniors and she speaks for about 50 minutes to seven individual classes during the day. So far 486 students have had this period of instruction. Multiple forms of media are used including a “smart board” to navigate the weather.gov site and a power point presentation. This is a highly interactive environment. Some of the topics discussed include: the Katrina Disaster, and reasons why people don’t evacuate, the recent Hurricane Irene, the threat of range fires in Northern Nevada, and weather related driving hazards. During these sessions, students shared their experiences and the amount of exposure the students had with fires, and what they would take with them if they were asked to evacuate. The Hazards Literacy Program has also expanded to the Paradise Valley School in Humboldt County in early March.
