Dear Parents, Dear Parents,

What a wild, wet and windy time it has been, and yet We have made it to the half-term break in good spirits despite probably one of our busiest 2 weeks this year! It was the hard work and pressures of recent weeks. It has been a wonderful last week to spend time in many lessons tough period for our students, not helped by the dark observing our enthusiastic team of staff exercising their craft mornings and incessant rain. It has been wonderful to finally have some sunshine although it is still very chilly outside and we would appreciate your cooperation in providing your child with warm waterproof outdoor garments including hats, scarves and gloves.

Love is in the air as The Mulberry have been talking about those we love and are special to us in advance of Valentine’s Day. We have been using the photographs that you have provided to talk about special people in our lives and why we love them.

Thank you so much for all the wonderful pictures, they have now been displayed on the children’s ‘family and those we love’ board.

As an extension to this theme, the Acorns have been focusing upon friends and friendship. How we care and look after each other through activities involving team work.

The Little Squirrels have been having lots of fun exploring a range of textures though tactile activities including a shaving foam car wash, transporting lentils, feet printing and painting each others hands.

The Oaks have been thinking about looking after ourselves and the contributing factors to staying healthy. We have looked at changes and differences that happen to our bodies before and after exercise.

As an extension to looking after ourselves, we have been planting seeds and learning how to care for our plants, giving them water and a happy environment to help them grow and be healthy, just like us!

Thank you to you all for helping us to support St Michael’s Hospice by wearing something yellow and of course your generous donations.

Have a wonderful weekend and half term.

Miss Lee and the team.

The School Council can be seen here enjoying their ‘end of Year 6 students having great fun during a drama session last office’ treat of jam doughnuts! They have been tremendous week. representatives for their forms and a great support to the school - well done!

This half term’s House matches were Tag Rugby and Netball. All KS2 children participated for their House in one or the other activity.

In the Tag Rugby St Mary’s won, St E’s were 2nd, St Patrick’s 3rd and St Martin’s 4th.

In the Netball St Martin’s were 1st, St E’s 2nd, St Mary’s 3rd and St Patrick’s 4th.

KS1 went for a walk to the local library this week and on their way looked at many things including the types of houses and homes that people live in. They also noticed the snowdrops and daffodils that are just coming into flower before stopping by the train station for a quick snack and drink. At the library they spent some time looking at the different types of books and everyone chose a book to bring back to school. After a quick story they caught the bus back up the hill and arrived back at the prep school in time for lunch.

Last week we had a fabulous time at Beach School. The children were amazed at the power and the colours of the sea and the waves. We found lots of ‘treasures’ from the high tide and excitedly identified various shells, plants and other things that had been washed up on the beach. Then, we spent some time collecting stones and balancing them to see which pair could build the highest tower. Before we returned to school, the children threw stones at their towers to knock them down again! Thanks, Key Stage One for another interesting and enjoyable afternoon out.

At the culmination of our topic on famous people, Year 2 launched their rockets on the school field. We have learned about famous people in the sciences, arts, sports, politics, maths and history. In recent weeks in history we have compared the explorations of Christopher Columbus and Neil Armstrong. The children loved learning about the moon landing and a little about what it is like to live on the space station!

Year 2 were very excited when their space food was delivered. They tasted the freeze-dried strawberries, raspberries and blueberries straight away and had the apple and an astronaut ice cream sandwich later in the week. There was no contest, the clear favourite was the ice cream sandwich! The children used all their senses and used a range of adjectives and descriptive language to describe their samples. They even insisted that Mrs Golding re-hydrate some of the apple pieces in a pot of water to see what would happen! Good scientific questioning, Year 2!

Dear Parents

If you receive an email that is from a person named Kevin Anderson, please note that this is a malicious email and has nothing to do with the school. Please ensure that you mark the email as spam or delete it to prevent damaging your computer. The email address might look like this:

Kevin Anderson

There is no person named Kevin Anderson that currently works at Battle Abbey School.

Technology is wonderful thing however it is increasingly used in a malicious way so we all need to take a bit of care when opening emails.

Suggested Guidelines: If you are unsure of the sender then do not open it. When a sender includes a link in their email, look carefully at the link. Hovering over the link with your mouse you can often see that the link is not legitimate in the bottom left of the browser window. You might have experienced this from the likes of Tech giants like PayPal where you receive an email asking your to login because there is a problem with your account, however if you hover over the login button you can usually see that the link is not legitimate (you will be able to tell this by how random and unrelated the link text looks) and will send you to another place where someone is waiting to steal your login credentials!

Generally if you do not know the person sending you the link then do not click on it!

Be safe.

Battle Abbey School pupils have raised over £6,000 for Cancer Research UK & Macmillan over the last year. A total which has seen us named best in the area for donations made to both organisations!

Local Macmillan Fundraising Manager Emma Hammett said; ‘The £3,291.89 raised by Battle Abbey School over multiple events was the most in the area. Enough to fund a Macmillan Nurse for three weeks.’

The school also raised £2,906.96 for CRUK from its involvement in Race for Life. Louise Wardle, Local CRUK Manager, said; ‘This total was one of the highest School Race for Life totals in the area.’

Donna Brampton, PE Teacher said; ‘I have organised several Macmillan fundraisers at Battle Abbey School, particularly the cof- fee mornings, and it’s lovely to know we’re a top performer in the area.

It’s very humbling to know the school is one of the highest fund-raiser for two such worthwhile causes and thanks must go to the parents and pupils for their generosity. The School has embraced the successes of the coffee mornings and continues to hold them annually, now driven by the School’s House System’.

Coming soon: Battle Abbeys 24 Hour Netballathon in aid of CRUK & local charity.

Dear Parents

It is probably no surprise that over 78% of our parents say that a personal recommendation from a current parent directly led them to join Battle Abbey School. Our parents are a fantastic ‘sales force’ operating on our behalf in the area and we thought it was time to recognise the superb job you do. To this end we are delighted to announce that we are starting our first ever ‘Recommend a Friend’ campaign for children of Prep School age.

We hope this will allow more families to take advantage of the new Wrap Around Care initiative (from 07:45 to 17:45 hours) and the all-inclusive fee structure. Further details are available from www.battleabbeyschool.com/prep

If you are an existing Battle Abbey School parent who refers a family to join our Prep School we think it is only fair to say a big ‘Thank You’. Essentially this means that on final sign up of the new family (in Reception to Year 6), you will receive a payment of £300 as soon as the first term’s fees have been paid.

The scheme is initially to be run for the remainder of this academic year only so all year groups stated are current academic year groups.

If you have any questions about the scheme please contact our Bursar (Sue Bonell) on [email protected]

Best regards
