FOCUS ON … ST RICHARD OF CHICHESTER

Yesterday was the feast of St Richard of Chichester. His life story is not well-known, although one of his prayers is well-loved and has become greatly loved and widely used.

His most famous prayer, printed below, was the inspiration for the song Day by Day included within Godspell, the 1970s musical of the life of Christ.

Richard had an eventful life, full of ups and downs. He was Bishop of Chichester in the mid 13th century, and a gifted scholar and lawyer. Yet at one point he found himself a homeless outcast in his own diocese until King Henry III finally accepted his appointment by the pope. He liked to travel around his diocese on foot, being accessible to all, and caring for anyone needful of his ministry.

Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which you have given us, for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us. Most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother, may we know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen. Sue Wallace
