A CONTRASTIVE STUDY OF THE IBIBIO AND IGBO SOUND SYSTEMS GOD’SPOWER ETIM Department Of Languages And Communication Abia State Polytechnic P.M.B. 7166, Aba, Abia State, Nigeria. [email protected] ABSTRACT This research strives to contrast the consonant phonemes, vowel phonemes and tones of Ibibio and Igbo in order to describe their similarities and differences. The researcher adopted the descriptive method, and relevant data on the phonology of the two languages were gathered and analyzed within the framework of CA before making predictions and conclusions. Ibibio consists of ten vowels and fourteen consonant phonemes, while Igbo is made up of eight vowels and twenty-eight consonants. The results of contrastive analysis of the two languages showed that there are similarities as well as differences in the sound systems of the languages. There are some sounds in Ibibio which are not present in Igbo. Also many sounds are in Igbo which do not exist in Ibibio. Both languages share the phonemes /e, a, i, o, ɔ, u, p, b, t, d, k, kp, m, n, ɲ, j, ŋ, f, s, j, w/. All the phonemes in Ibibio are present in Igbo except /ɨ/, /ʉ/, and /ʌ/. Igbo has two vowel segments /ɪ/ and /ʊ/ and also fourteen consonant phonemes /g, gb, kw, gw, ŋw, v, z, ʃ, h, ɣ, ʧ, ʤ, l, r/ which Ibibio lacks. Both languages have high, low and downstepped tones but Ibibio further has contour or gliding tones which are not tone types in Igbo. Also, the downstepped tone in Ibibio is conventionally marked with exclamation point, while in Igbo, it is conventionally marked with a raised macron over the segments bearing it. -

Improving Initiation of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Among Key Populations in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Lagos States
Nigeria DATA USE BRIEF Improving Initiation of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis among Key Populations in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Lagos States INTRODUCTION Key populations (KP), such as sex workers and men who have sex with men, have the highest HIV prevalence in Nigeria.1 To reduce the HIV infection rate, Nigeria’s HIV program integrated the use of oral pre-exposure prophylaxis2 (PrEP) as a substantive additional measure to existing services for KP. The USAID-funded KP CARE-1 project, implemented by Heartland Alliance Nigeria, established KP one-stop shops (KP OSS) to provide oral PrEP to KPs in three states—Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Lagos. Each KP one-stop shop was provided with yearly targets for A staffer at a community one-stop shop for key populations distribution of oral PrEP. The results of these weekly HFR analyses were disseminated to Heartland Alliance and discussed during Enhanced Site Management (ESM) cluster meetings supported by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). During these meetings, Data.FI facilitated discussion among all USAID implementing partners (IPs) to review performance, identify gaps, and institute cause-corrective measures. -

Four sampling stations were selected. Station one, was a partially dredged section of the river, station 2 and 4; fully dredged portions while station 3, (under the bridge) was not dredged. Temperature, DO, pH, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids, turbidity, salinity, acidity, BOD, transparency, depth, nitrate, nitrite, sulphate, phosphate and ammonium were measured using standard methods. There were no spatial significant variations (p>0.05) in eleven (temperature, pH, EC, salinity, TDS, BOD, acidity, sulphate, transparency, nitrate and nitrite) of the sixteen parameters measured. However, temperature, EC, salinity, turbidity, sulphate, ammonium, nitrate and nitrite showed significant seasonal variations (p<0.05). The remaining parameters did not show significant seasonal variations (p>0.05). No parameters exceeded WHO standards except for turbidity, thus indicating water quality to be good. Comparative Analysis of Public and Private Borehole Water Supply Sources in Uruan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State

C B. B. Okon Civil Engineering Department Faculty of Engineering University of Uyo Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria Abstract Comparative analysis of public and private borehole water supply sources in Uruan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, was conducted in order to examine their qualities. A total of 13 water samples collected from 10 randomly selected private and 3 functional public boreholes in the area were analysed using standard analytical techniques and instruments. Most of the physicochemical parameters of samples from the two sources were within the acceptable limits of the World Health Organisation (WHO) for drinking water. Eight different bacteria species were isolated and identified. They include Escherichia coli (18.75%), Bacillus subtilis (15.625%), Streptococcus faecalis (15.625%), Proteus vulgaris (12.50%), Klebsiella aerogenes (12.50%), Micrococcus varians (9.375%), Clostridium perfringens (9.37%) and Staphylococcus aureus (6.25%). Total viable count on private borehole water samples ranged from 1.6x103 to 5.5x103cfu/ml while that of the public was 9x101cfu/ml. In the private source, E.coli ranged from 1x100 to 4x100cfu/100ml, whereas 4x100 to 3.4x101cfu/100ml was recorded for the coliforms. Streptococcus faecalis and Clostridium perfringens ranged from 1x100 to 3x100cfu/100ml and 1x100 to 2x100cfu/100ml respectively, and did not meet the approved drinking water standard. There was no growth of indicator organism in samples from the public boreholes. -

Corresponding Author: [email protected] ABSTRACT: This study has been carried out mainly for the assessment of naturally occurring radionuclides i.e 40K, 238U and 232Th in rain water samples collected from five LGAs in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. The activity concentrations of the naturally occurring radionuclides 40K, 238U and 232Th in the rainwater samples were measured by the means of a gamma-ray spectrometry using a sodium Iodide Thallium doped NaI (TI) detector. The average activity concentration obtained for 40K in all the location was 27.8 +2.50 Bq.L-1 with a range of 9.4 + 0.88 to 52.3 + 4.26 Bq.L-1, while for 238U, the average activity concentration was 5.2 + 0.88 Bq.L-1 with a range of 1.2 + 0.21 to 15.00 + 2.92 Bq.L-1, for 232Th, the average activity concentration was 6.7 + 0.69 Bq.L-1 with a range of 0.1 + 0.00 to 14.2 + 1.41 Bq.L-1. The total annual effective dose due to the intake of 40K, 238U and 232Th by all the locations ranged from 0.08 + 0.01 mSv.y-1 to 1.53 + 0.17 mSv.y-1 with an average of 0.76 + 0.08 mSv.y-1 did not show any significant health impact since it is below the recommended public exposure limit of 1mSv.y-1. -

This paper highlights the need for rural infrastructure particularly road development in a reforming and developing economy. The accessibility of settlements to the states and federal routes was investigated. Findings reveal that out of the 1452 settlements in the state, 46.9% were accessible while 53.1% were not accessible to either state or federal roads. Alao, D.O Ph.D, Ndem, Bassey Ph.D, Atere, Olusegun, Clement, Nwogwugwu, N. and Ojo, O.1 BABCOCK UNIVERSITY, ILISHAN REMO, OGUN STATE,NIGERIA ABSTRACT The Supreme Court Judgment of June 12, 2012 transferring 76 oil wells to Akwa Ibom State following the litigation by Cross River State, brought to the fore the politics of oil resources This motivates the study to examining the mechanism for resolving resource conflicts in Nigeria.. This paper adopted the historical, descriptive and analytical approach as its method of study and qualitative in nature. The study found that political approach and incorporation of traditional norms and values are preferable as a means of solving socio-economic differences among friendly states rather than resorting to litigation. It concludes such disputes are manifestation weak state reflecting in lack of effective institutional mechanisms for resolving conflicts. The study recommends an inclusive mechanism in resource allocation like in Alaska while conciliation and arbitration method should be adopted at the expense of litigation in line with constitutional provisions as this will gradually demystify statetism. 1. INTRODUCTION The issue of boundary and the administration of resources along the boundary line will for a long time constitute a challenge that the government in Nigeria would have to cope with in order to ensure peaceful coexistence among various ethnic nationalities. The terms "border" and "boundary" are physical in origin. Johnson and Machelsen, (1997) observe in most cases, it has a wider meanings in political and economic geography than “frontiers,” which refers to a special case of border used to divide the sovereign limits of adjacent independent according to Guo (2005).
