While it appears that capitalism provides some necessary element for a democracy, a problem of political inequality and a possible violation of liberty can be observed in many democratic countries. I argue that this political inequality and threat to liberty are fueled by capitalism. I will analyze the ways in which capitalism works against democratic aims. This is done through first illustrating what my accepted conception of democracy is. I then continue to depict how the various problems with capitalism that I describe violate this conception of democracy. This leads me to my conclusion that while capitalism is necessary for a democracy to reach a certain needed level of independence from the state, capitalism simultaneously limits a democracy from reaching its full potential. -

The Philosophy of Free Trade and Its Applicability in East Asia ¿Está ligada la cultura al pensamiento de libre comercio?: su filosofía y aplicabilidad en el Este de Asia Tae Jin Park [email protected] West Virgina State University ABSTRACT Proponents of free trade, especially theorists known as “neo-liberals,” preach free trade as a global ethic and emphasize four great benefits from it: 1) reciprocal economic growth; 2) individual freedom; 3) political democracy; 4) international peace. This review article will examine the validity of these assumptions in East Asia. Although many East Asian states are great beneficiaries of the liberal international trade system that has developed since the end of World War II, their political and economic developments generally do not conform to Western expectations because their cultural values are still “Confucian” and their political economy relied heavily on state leadership. The philosophy of free trade is largely incompatible with East Asian historical experiences. The credibility of the free trade doctrine in East Asia comes from the power and influence of the U.S. rather than from the usefulness of the free trade doctrine. Frontier Culture: The Roots and Persistence of “Rugged Individualism” in the United States Samuel Bazzi, Martin Fiszbein, and Mesay Gebresilasse NBER Working Paper No. 23997 November 2017, Revised August 2020 JEL No. D72,H2,N31,N91,P16 ABSTRACT The presence of a westward-moving frontier of settlement shaped early U.S. history. In 1893, the historian Frederick Jackson Turner famously argued that the American frontier fostered individualism. We investigate the Frontier Thesis and identify its long-run implications for culture and politics. We track the frontier throughout the 1790–1890 period and construct a novel, county-level measure of total frontier experience (TFE). Historically, frontier locations had distinctive demographics and greater individualism. Long after the closing of the frontier, counties with greater TFE exhibit more pervasive individualism and opposition to redistribution. This pattern cuts across known divides in the U.S., including urban–rural and north–south. We provide evidence on the roots of frontier culture, identifying both selective migration and a causal effect of frontier exposure on individualism. Overall, our findings shed new light on the frontier’s persistent legacy of rugged individualism. ABSTRACT Neoliberalism arose from classical liberalism, which was believed in individual liberty, equal opportunity, and private property should administer by individual ‘law of nature’ while the ‘law of state’ regarded as a ‘necessary evil’. When neoliberalism had emerged in 1970s, it replaced the theories of Keynesianism, which targeted state regulation on the economic policy; towards a more ‘monetarist’ individual self-regulating and ‘market law’ approach. This “Individual against all” approach of neoliberalism led the mass to live like slaves in slavery age and peasants in feudalism. Then economic crises aggravated and the ‘law of identity’ emerged or neoliberalism shifted towards all against all approaches of neo-populism. This paper explores the neoliberal law of the individual over the mass and its practical failure; next it discusses all against all laws of neo-populism and its threats. In the end, it provides the missing laws of both the ‘neo-neo’ approaches as a solution anda concluding remark. What Was ‘The Enlightenment’? We hear about it all the time. It was a pivotal point in European history, paving the way for centuries of history afterward, but what was ‘The Enlightenment’? Why is it called ‘The Enlightenment’? Why did the period end? The Enlightenment Period is also referred to as the Age of Reason and the “long 18th century”. It stretched from 1685 to 1815. The period is characterized by thinkers and philosophers throughout Europe and the United States that believed that humanity could be changed and improved through science and reason. Thinkers looked back to the Classical period, and forward to the future, to try and create a trajectory for Europe and America during the 18th century. It was a volatile time marked by art, scientific discoveries, reformation, essays, and poetry. It begun with the American War for Independence and ended with a bang when the French Revolution shook the world, causing many to question whether ideas of egalitarianism and pure reason were at all safe or beneficial for society. Opposing schools of thought, new doctrines and scientific theories, and a belief in the good of humankind would eventually give way the Romantic Period in the 19th century. What is Enlightenment? Philosopher Immanuel Kant asked the self-same question in his essay of the same name. In the end, he came to the conclusion: “Dare to know! Have courage to use your own reason!” This was an immensely radical statement for this time period. Previously, ideas like philosophy, reason, and science – these belonged to the higher social classes, to kings and princes and clergymen. -

In times of economic slowdown, it often bubbles to the surface of popular economic discourse, threatening to make an unwelcome return to politics and policy. The spirits of mercantilism and protectionism have always gone very much hand in hand. In this paper, Alexander Toft provides an excellent appraisal of David Hume’s monetary thought, in particular examining his attack on the 17th century mercantilist monopoly over economic discourse. Introduction The history of economic thought can be viewed as a series of ideological battles, and key amongst them must rank the debate surrounding the notion that the government has a role to play in ensuring a more favorable balance of trade – what is commonly called mercantilism. Adam Smith is often credited with initiating this debate when he attacked the concept in The Wealth of Nations (Smith, 1776). However, this paper will examine the work of another original detractor from mercantilist thinking, David Hume. A philosopher and historian first and foremost, Hume was also an eminent economist. This paper will argue that through his analysis of the influence of money on inflation and the balance of payments, Hume played a pioneering role in challenging the mercantilist monopoly on economic thought. He contributed towards the development of an alternative theory which centered on free trade, as opposed to a ‘fear of goods’ and ‘love of money’. -

Students will then further explore this period of history and its prominent figures by designing a dinner party for 12 Enlightenment thinkers. This project will encourage students to learn more about the period and the philosophers associated with it, as well as synthesize what they have learned while utilizing higher order thinking, group work skills, and creativity. Essential Questions • What was the Age of Enlightenment/Age of Reason and what led to this shift in thought? • Who were the prominent historical figures during the Age of Enlightenment and in what ways were they similar and/or different in their philosophies? • What impact did the Age of Enlightenment have throughout various countries on society, culture, politics, etc.? • How did the Enlightenment philosophers influence American government?
